So i just watched your video and I have been thinking of making a mountain dulcimer for awhile but it looks like your cigar box dulcimer would be a fun starter project so if you could send me any tips or advice I would be very appreciative my email is brucytw@gmail.com
I;m making a dulcimer from scratch at the moment I am about ready to smash it in the street. Mainly because of the frets. Did you make yours yourself and if so could you make a vid showing what steps you took not only in crafting the frets and installing but also how you measured out your fret spaces/ Yours is way awesome I love that its more like a guitar than a lap instrument

It's very nice. I'm tempted to build one of those.
I think dulcimer type instruments are normally tuned to CGC or DAD. Japanese shamisen and Okinawan sanshin are tuned to a CFC pattern, which would also be a fun tuning to play with. I've dropped down to GCG, but the instrument doesn't have enough tension for a good tone in that tuning.
You commented that there are no half steps. Actually, it is a diatonic instrument, meaning that it is fretted to a major scale. But there are half steps between 3 and 4 and 7 and 8. Great cbg!
Great neck work! I started building cbg's last year and have yett to build one with frets. Can you help out with neck advice?Tool's required,Planning and setup ideas? I just finished a cigar box electric 6 string with a yard sale guitar neck.but yard sale guitars are not always available. And the dulcimer neck looks fun. Thanks for the video!
If you go to my web page, which is listed in the video description above to the right, you'll see link to "Salad Bowl Banjo #3 Being Built. Scroll down to the bottom of that page to see the steps I take to shape a neck. I recently bought a shinto rasp and it's a perfect tool for shaping necks. Good luck.

Good sound, the low note it a bit sharp, but why not? Music is about this, and only this: the enjoyment of the moment.
