i have a 2004 Ram1500 that I bought brand new with the 3.7 and 35 inch tires at 156k now with nothing but reliability . My fiancee has an 06 Dakota 3.7 with 110k that shes had since 2008 thats had zero issues . I will never buy another brand truck as long as i live
I have a 99 Jeep with the 4.7 at 174,000 miles with no engine problems. It has recently developed a tick that increases with engine RPM, but goes away as the car heats up. It sounds more like the noise is coming from under the vehicle so I'm pretty sure it's not a rocker arm, maybe an exhaust manifold bolt that is loose. They are great engine's if taken care of.
I know what you mean. I've owned 5.2's (318 CID) and 5.8's (360 CID) and they were great engines. The 4.7 (Mercedes) I have in my Dakota has been great so far but I only have 53,000 miles on it. I plan to keep the oil changed often and watch the the temp gauge closely. My neighbor had well over 100,000 miles on his Dakota with no issues. Good Luck.
had a 4.7 v8 in my dakota, WORST MISTAKE EVER. Majr overheating problems i guess there known for warping and cracking heads allot. And heard they have bad oil problems, should of never got rid of the 5.2 one of the best motors ever
Mine sounded the same, and the guy I bought it from said he had over heated it. I figure heat causing thinning of the oil causing the lifter to collapse and the rocker popping off. Untorqued the cam lifted it up and put it back together, now it runs like a champ. I am going to be running 10w40, If it is good enough for my cummins it should work in the Jeep.
@superhawkn Not sure if the newer model years have this problem. Best bet is to treat all 3.7 and 4.7 engines as if they are affected. Keep the oil changed often and level FULL. Also doing a fuel induction/injector cleaner is advisable.
Aeration? I'm putting one back together for a friend, where rockers had come loose and it was due to valve seats coming loose and not allowing the valve to close. The rocker arm then didn't receive pressure from both sides and fell loose. I'm tapping the valve seats back in but I don't know how long they will last when the engine's back together. The engine in question had the heads removed.

Yup, that's a dropped valve seat and popping back into the intake.
