I was bungfungled the first time I ran into that question myself. I worked in the junkyard with my cousin for 3 years and (for obvious reasons) it was just something I had to learn about...and it thoroughly confused me until one of the guys actually drew a picture for me, lol..

BTW I change my gear at the track by changing from my 275/45R 20 rears to 275/50R17 which is a change of 3%.

@kerobinsonii I used to put really tall tires on my old drag car to drive it to and from the track I forget the sizes , but it dropped the rpms on the highway like another gear lol gear ratios are what makes or breaks a drag car for sure , and no two engines like the same gears either lol
