dont buy it the flash is very close to lens, evrey time you take a picture whit a flash, down on the left of your picthre has a shadow on it. you have to remeber every time to zome in to take a picture whit  flash on. It is embarrassing.

how did you manage to stop the autofocus effect when filiming?, on mine, sometimes get blurry images, also, the WX1, does not take black and white pictures right?, this is kind of dissapointing, even my blackberry bold9000 can take black and white pictures...

Very good review, I just bought the WX1 and the H55 today but will return one of them and currently I do not know which one to pick yet. the WX1 is compact and easy to put in the pocket which I usually do but the H55 has 2x better zoom but its bulkier. Both have very similar features. But the Wx1 has the "Hand-held Twilight" feature which I like.

I have this cammera; it's night time performance is simply staggering for such a compact camera. However, daytime shots lack colour and contrast vibrancy. The on camera screen is deceptive as it looks vibrant but upon transfer to PC, pictures look washed out and require post editing. It's a great camera all in all, small and compact and convienant. Although if I really want to take a great picture, it's back to my D700 I go.

Out of these three it is hard to say, other than I would not pick the WX1, the sound recording is poor.

But i have one question for you.. I've seen this in a camera shop, and i've hold it in my hand, not for long though. And now ive got in doubt, if the camera is too small, if you know what i mean? It's the same size as an cigarette pack. And would this be an issue if you use the camera for taking a lot of pictures?

Hello, thanks for the kind comment. Regarding size, for taking photos I think the size is fine. However, if you can see yourself holding it for prolonged periods of time, like one hour or more, either for photos or video, then yes, cramp may well set in.

That is exactly what I'm looking to do, and I'm after a low cost decent quality gadget to do this (aren't we all?)

I would go for a Canon SX200IS for what you have in mind. That is just my opinion though. My SX200IS review will be online soon.

Better to buy the DSC-w290? The DSC-WX1 or to wait for next years cameras which will improve on this technology?

Meaning, is the WX1 going to be like the DSC-W300 which was good at first but then got outshone by the newer dsc-w290 which shot HD video and had a wider lens?

Because I'm sure the complaints of the reflective screen, loose/easily opened battery door, noise while zooming will be fixed by Sony for the new batches.

P.S. how many mega-pixels is it shooting in 16:9 widescreen?

I can't say. I used a high end Lexar 16GB stick and a Sandisk one, both had problems with this particular camera. I am testing the Canon SX200IS now, far better optically, although you can only digitally zoom when recording movies. Think of it a 12x optical zoom on the Canon, with a bit of digital tweaking to the zoom possible whilst in movie mode. I cannot recommend the Sony WX1 if you intend to record HD movies. Other than that it is good. Stick to 8GB memory sticks if you opt for the Sony.

Well, I do not know the definitive answer. Just the two 16GB cards i had problems with, then there is quite a lot of reports from other users having problems. My advice, buy the camera and 8GB card from the same supplier. Then they can deal with it if you have problems.

Yes, good place to buy. Or how about camerbox and buy the card from them too. Or even Amazon, they have great customer service, plus then you get a week to try it out, you can always return if you are not happy with the quality or that zoom noise. With Jessops this is a lot more difficult.

I have been waiting for this camera to come out for 2 months and your review really sold it to me. Do think this is the best compact digital camera? Is there another compact that is better? Would the memory card lose photos and not work? Is the memory card problem a reason not to get this camera? Should I wait on getting this camera until Christmas when there may be better cameras on the market?

OK, there are three main choices at the moment. This Sony WX1... problems with 16GB cards, noise when zooming (very bad). Then the Panasonic TZ7, good all round, over saturated colour in movies. The Canon SX200IS, good in all respects except only digital zoom whilst filming. If you can wait a week or so I am reviewing the Canon. Also, between now and Christmas there are bound to be some new releases. Oh and the Sony TX1 does not suffer the zooming noise.
