I was their also, at the very top of the arena. In fact living in the DC area--I been to three of the 4 Georgetown games- missing only the NIT game. The next year I was sick, but my mother knew better not to tell me I could not go.
What ever happened to UTEP basketball? I will admit ever since the great Mr. Haskins(R.I.P) left, there are nothing but wannabe coaches trying to move up and have no true HEART for the University. But I only make $350.000 here! Mr. Haskins you were truly the MAN!
UTEP was put on probation by the NCAA in the mid 90's for reasons still unknown (or understood) by me. They are just now beginning to recover. They will be back.
They NCAA was being put under tons of pressure about UTEP being so good, so they came over and investigated for several months and couldn't find anything but the fact that Coach had given players rides to work in the summer time. Total BS. The rule is no longer in affect.
How about a Conference USA Regular Season Title this year and a trip to NCAA Tournament? That's a pretty good stepping stone for this school, Believe Me UTEP Basketball is BACK!!! Fear the AXE!!!
Haskins was not about money. That is what most El Pasoans will never understand. UTEP basketball remained a great program because they had a coach that decided to stay in one place for the remainder of his career. A person that did not care about huge contracts or building his name. Something that is unheard of now. That will never happen again.
