  • hey wat is the name of the software that adds effects on to the input? thanks

  • @Mac10808 I use the software that came with the EMU 0404 soundcard and only works with EMU sound cards and Interfaces.

  • @Mac10808 The effect was just the stock compressor

  • I do just like you do with FL Studio with borrowing the cpu for compression during recording. Alot of people are under the notion that you need external means. This is the future people. Get an Intel i7 with 8 Gigs of ram or better tower and now external racks are obsolete. Real talk.

  • how do i put the instrumental ?

  • good vid, on to number 2.

  • Hi there, thanks for this. Curious as to why the compressor sounds worse if you apply it after the vocals have been recorded? :S

  • do u do the compression before u lay vocals or after?

  • hey bro thanks! But how do you actually record the vocals? I exported a beat from acid n now I'm trying to lay vocals w/sonar. Help!

  • @MistaSilk1 what inputs you have?(Soundcard) Using a reg. analog mic or a usb mic?

  • @maltcus i have a usb mic hooked up through a m-audio fast track

  • @maltcus i have a usb mic hooked up through a m-audio fast track

the beat is all on one track. I inserted add a track(3) for vocals. Now I,m stuck:[

  • @MistaSilk1 when u add a new track. arm the track by clicking on the R button to make it red. Say something in the mic u should hear & see in the meters. if not change the input on the track. make sure the mic is plugged in before start sonar

  • @maltcus ok- I did click R made it red, then hit record up top, the beat started playing, I started talking in the mic and then hit stop to see if it recorded. Only the beat played back. The meters was flashing as I was spittin but it wouldnt record. O yea when I put the headphones on, I cant hear the beat, but I can hear my voice.

  • @maltcus I appreciate your help bro, I didnt getit workin yet but I will. u've been quite helpful-1

  • @maltcus wats up bro- Vocals are recording yay! BUT coming thru 1 speaker?! (left)

Also how to manipualte vocal tracks? (volume, effects, etc) Thanks

  • @901244tig yes the only reason why stereo will sound better is if you are using stereo effects (hardware effects) before the audio hit your computer. Other then that then mono will sound the same

  • Is this sonar compatible with Reason?

  • @jasonscott45 well if you export your reason file as a wav, you can put it in sonar, i dont know about puting all the midi tracks.

  • @jasonscott45 yes you just use Reason as a rewire.

  • when mixing down, how do you compress vocal bass ?

  • y dont u let me hear the vocals as you're editing them?

  • @maltcus. Listen not ever rapper starting out wants to pay 20,30,45 or more dollars for a beat to practice on or promo something if there just beginnin. so i offer a couple of my beats for .99 cents , beats that i spent maybe 30 minutes makin. for the people who want beats to master their flow and technique, i sell more expensive beats as well. but you tell me. if you were someone just starting out n the rap game and tryna focus on rapping would you be wanting to pay high pprices for a beat.?

  • .99 cent BEATS!! HOT myflashstore(dot)net type in T TRACKZ in search

  • @MrCallmematt .99 cents? This is the reason why artist do no respect the art of making beats anymore

  • @maltcus maybe maybe not. but hey my beats are fire. did you listen? you can buy em starting as low as .99 cents unexclusive. and 15$ exclusive rights. check em out. myflashstore(dot)net/profile/9421-matt-thompson

    preciate it man.

  • @MrCallmematt No I did not listen. TO be honest I am not interested in hearing .99 beats. If you feel they worth .99 then ore power to u.

  • @MrCallmematt no I would not. I see your point. If you offer some at .99 for that purpose that is cool but, as I have said in another video. When cats sell beat so super low prices they contribute to lowering the value of beats. Software such as vsts being the biggest reason why the value of beats are so low

  • @maltcus i agree. just yesterday i was looking at a producers music and he charged .99 cents for every single track. the name of the producer was ".99 cent beats" and when i see those types of producers, it makes me think the Beat game is dying. but as i said i only offer 1 or two tracks for .99 cents and thats because i do understand that most starting out rappers dont have the money to pay 50 bucks for a leased beat. im just marketing to as broad an audience as possible. i mean no disrespect!

  • @MrCallmematt Yes the beat game is dying. Yes there are a few I mean a few who making money but, to many dealers not enough buyers. I see you not trying to disrespect the game but, enough has done it already. Now I just do this for fun. I love producing that is why I do. Other then that I would not do it anymore

  • .99 cent BEATS!! HOT

  • You need a pop filter for the mic your recording on.

  • @jnwpse Thanks for the advice but, did you understand what I was saying? or as what Chris Tucker would say. Doooo Yoouuu Understand the words thats coming out of my mouth?

  • is loading the comressor the way you did in the video the same as right clicking in the fx box and adding the compressor that way? I noticed after you added the compressor it did not show in the fx box tho, so im curious?

  • @Sickamore34 the difference is if you put the compressor in the xf box. It only compress that track. Put it on a bus you can compress more then one track at a time with the same compressor.

  • Anyone here use Presonus Studio One artist Interface or MacBook 09' Garage Band Interface. Let me know. I'm still on a search on getting good quality for my rap vocals, so it may sound smooth.

Mic: Audio Technica AT2020(also got Generis, some old school brand not made no more) with a Pop Filter of course

  • @FrankYS512 cakewalk sonar 7 - now they have sonar 8 and the newest sonar x1

  • Thank you so much for these videos!! it helps me alot!- Jessakay

  • @Jessakaybits Yw welcome. I am going to do another series when I get cakewalk sonar x. that is going to be hot. i watched you r videos too. We need females like u in the game

  • hey, can u tell me which mic preamp you use?

  • @mattmiddleton91 i use a preamp made by Art. not expensive at all. the "Art tube mp"

  • man thnx that realy helped preciate it man

  • I just gave a friend request. I'm like BRAND NEW to this. I got Cakewalk music creator le. I just set my audio where I can record and here it playback, but when I do the pitch is off. I sound like a chimpmunk, but the beat playback normal. What am I doing wrong?

  • @leout3 hmm first are you using a older computer or a newer one?

  • @maltcus Yeah, I am using a older computer. Emachine

  • @leout3 that could be your problem. A virus maybe on your computer. Are you running too many programs. Is it hooked up to the internet? the bottom line it is your computer. If you could save all the files you want to keep to a separate hard drive or cds and reinstall your computer. May to it to a computer repair to see what they can do but, before that is there any other problem with other programs? is ur computer running slower then normal?

  • @leout3 I bought it from a pawn shop. It was running kinda slow until I did a system restore. But it's running pretty fast now though. I don't have any problems with any other program though, but the software it self did a test on my sound and it showed sum things was missing though. Maybe that could have something to do with it?

  • @leout3 did you figure out the problem yet? sounds like a sample rate conversion problem. i dont use cakewalk, i use logic, but this can happen in any program. go into your preferences in cakewalk and make sure the sample rate you record in matches the sample rate of the play-back. cuz if you record in 44.1k but try to play it back at 96k, ur going to get the chipmunk effect. or in the opposite situation, your voice would sound wayy slower and deeper than normal. hope that helps. let me know!

  • @NyXoTiK u know what u r right. cause I had that problem when I have my sonar set to 44.k but, I had my M3 connected s/p dif and it only sets to 48K.When I had the M3 connected it also set my soundcard to 48K. my windows media player was acting crazy too. So yea that might be it

  • @maltcus haha ya it happened to me when i first got logic, i was trying to make my own mash-ups of some hip hop songs and didnt realize i was importing them all at different sample rates. so the instrumentals would be playing wayyyyy too fast lol, but the acapellas would sound like slow-motion zombies hahahah.

  • actually both is there an effect to change pitch? and is there a tool to move track clips around?

  • @TEAMxMAFiA as far as just movign the clip. Just click on the clip. Hold and drag. There is a pitch shifting plug in but. lets say u don't have a pitch shifting plug. google a free one. I am not sure of any good ones but, there are out there

  • I was Woundering if you could help me by telling me how the hell im supposed to get that dropout sh!^ to stop its driving me insane it cuts me off in the middle of recording and pisses me off.....

i just got a samson g-track and use sonar 6 LE if its any help

    much appreciated thnx..

  • @FunnyColor86 -!st how many plug is you have running? If you are running more plugins then you computer can handle then it will drop out. If you are running at a bit rate that your computer can't handle it will drop out. Too many tracks. drop out. Go to option - audio - and you will see audio buffer with a slider. Is it set to close the the faster setting? U may have to slide it a little closer the slower. Not too much cause then u will have a delay in ur recordings. if using asio? use wdm

  • one last question for today lol..how do i move a audio track like a time tool to move anywhere? PLEASE AND THANKS

  • @TEAMxMAFiA u mean change the pitch or just move a audio clip from one spot to another spot

  • thanks for the help..but i got a another question..i dont hav sonar 8.5 i have sonar LE.and when i record and want to put effects on my vocals..is there a way to put effects on a little piece of it instead of the whole vocal track?

  • @TEAMxMAFiA yes 2 ways the better one is to put the effect in the ex bin. select the clip you want the effect on. (Tool bar) process - apply audio effect.

  • But if I record mono, it will only come through left speeker .... and that sounds bad :S All pros i hear there voice comes from both speakers ?

  • @OfficialJovi some how you are recording in stereo and selecting only the left. You should be record only the left input but, plays back out of both speakers. You r voice is a mono instrument. You can sing low pitch and high pitch as the sametime. that makes it mono

  • @maltcus

oh I see. But i record in left.... il try to turn MONO ON on the sound card, but i think ive tried before but nothing happened . Il try again though ! thanks for your reply, il MSG you if i need some more help ! subbed !

  • @OfficialJovi yea I am not sure what soundcard u got but, if you have multiple inputs some of the input may be 2 mono inputs left and right to make a stereo and only can be used that way and not be set to be use as 2 mono inputs that is both L/R each.

  • i just got samson co1u mic and got sonar 8.5 and wenever i record i hear the metronome in their and its dinging..do u know how to get rid of that sound?

  • @TEAMxMAFiA I will tell you for a $39.99 fee. lol am messing with you. Its the metronome. go to option - project - and you will see metronome play and record. Record is checked. uncheck it. Then you should be good

  • dude help

every time that i record my vokal, theres an instrument that plays with it

    how can i stop it?

  • @christianac16 Without knowing what hardware you are using. What interface/sound card I may not be able to answer but, here are some common reasons. YOUR HEADPHONES ARE TOO LOUD. Your mic maybe picking up the beat playing in your head phones. Some sound cards have settings where you can record what ever is playing on y our computer such as media player or you DAW. Your sound card outputs wired back into your inputs

  • @maltcus well,im jsut using my pc and sonar 6 le programm for recording, but anytiime the i record the vocal the snare beat plays, gonna show you the video.

  • @christianac16 If the beat is kinda low in the back ground then its more then likely the first reason

  • what's your opinion on the difference in quality with dealing with hardware compression up against software compression?

  • @OfficialRickdiculous Hardware is better but, may not be need for every setup. If you are not recording audio and just using soft synths. Software is cool. If you recording vocals hardware is better to use. Software not bad but, hardware is better before it hits your AD converter(soundcard) software would be after the fact.

  • Marshall Electronics V57M Studio Condenser Microphone IS that good microphone to get for a begginer. Like i wanna start making a demo. And wat pop filter should i buy. Also wats the best program to use?

  • @angeriod Pop filter are pretty general. You do have the metal filter now which will last longer then the soft filters. Best program. Depends on your skill level. You will not be comfortable using any kind of program. I would choose a program that you can get help in if you need is beside the software tech support. As far as I am concern I would get sonar. You have a sonar expert right here. :)

  • @maltcus Is sonar easy to use for a begginer? Because im just starting all this.

  • @angeriod if you are a beginner anything will be hard or uncomfortable to use. I believe its easy to use but, if you know nothing about DAW software it can be hard. Once you learn its easy

  • Hey wen i record theres no sound comin out of the headphones n wen i finish recordin n play it again its sounds really high pitch so i gotta change the pitch is there any way i can fix to were i can jus reocrd n the pitch is set? n also weni record it dosnt record everthin i say it only records 20 secs of it could help me out n how fix all this?

    thankx

  • @YungCuzzi Sounds like to me you may a virus on you computer. Sonar should never act like that. Another reason would be that your computer can not handle sonar. Which version do you have and what are the specs on your computer. How ram, processing speed, P4, dual core, etc... and which windows are you using? anything about ur computer.

  • @maltcus I Have Sonar 7 and the computer i have is a dell Dimension 4300 Pentium 4 it has windows xp professional cpu 2.20 GHz 2.19 GHz and 256 MB of Ram...Idk if its bcuz im usin a usb mic or wht

  • @YungCuzzi no the usb mic would not do that. I know a artist who uses a usb mic and her vocals are great. 256mb is very low ram. if you have other things running on your computer then I would see where ram would be a problem. Did it ever work correctly? cause if it did you have to ask yourself what happen to the computer before it started acting up. another thing if its a crack version then it may not work as well either.

  • @maltcus No i put it on my computer n thts how it workd...wht about wen i record how come it only records 15 seconds of it is there way to change tht? n u no how theres an input which for me its the usb mic n for the out it says 0 is tht y mayb no vocals is comin out the speakers wen i record cuz u can hear the music playin but no vocals

  • @YungCuzzi as far as it only playing 15 second sounds like something is wrong with your computer. There is no setting in sonar that would only allow you to record 15 sec. as far as your input you need to go to option - audio and make sure you usb mic is selected on the input

  • @maltcus alright man thankx for ur time

  • @YungCuzzi plus you might have to make sure you mic is plugged up and on before you start sonar

  • nice

  • Thanks bro for the vid

  • I see you use EMU patchmix soundcard, I have the same (0404) can you help me out with how to import effects or plug in effects into the soundcard. Something like auto tune so I can hear the effect as I record instead of doing it post recording...please help...thanx

  • @PREMO24 That would be amazon with we could import effect but, we can't and believe me if they made it that way you would be spending much more then what you paid for it. Now you can import presets. Not effects. Go to my forum and I sign up. I will put some presets for you there The site is in the description

  • HEY BRO DO YOU DOUBLE THE VOICES ON RAP?

  • @el8vomensajero Yes and no. I do both. I will say I like single vocal on the verse with ablibs. Double some words I want to stand out. Then double triple or quad the hooks. There is no rules but, I do it that way because to me the hook stand out more.

  • @el8vomensajero Yes and no. I do both. I will say I like single vocal on the verse with ablibs. Double some words I want to stand out. Then double, triple or quad the hooks. There is no rules but, I do it that way because to me the hook stand out more.

  • when i try to actually try to record vocals it keeps saying i need to assign both input and output the same .. how do i do it

  • @MilitiaMackMusic sounds like to me you need to go to option - audio and assign your input and output.

  • @maltcus yeah but i dunno what to change it to

  • cheers -- these are very clear. good stuff -- thanks for that.

  • @theogphd yw

  • Hey where can i find some free plugins for Sonar 7? Anyone know?

  • heya, you know that menu/toolbar column right at the left hand side of the screen, my fingers slipped and somehow that column has dissappered. Do you know how I can bring it back? This is the colum with all those audio sliders right at the left hand side, with the volume meter.. I dont know how to get that back

  • @metric25 2 ways. 1 i believe u can just go left and drag it back open. 2 there is a icon on the tool bar at top that will open and close that. plus there is a short cut key that will as well. I am not sure what the short cut is but, go to help and short listing and u will find it there. Hope this help

  • is the sonar free?? nd safe?

  • @tweety11908 sorry sonar if not free and its very safe. Its worth the $199 for the studio version

  • @maltcus It's not always safe.

Sometimes you can make a song about the gangsta grind and people might try to shoot you for it.

  • @Youexposed1 lol yea but, the program is still but, what u say on the program maybe different

  • This is Good Info on this vid at 2:25 & on...When I record my mixtapes i do 1 take pan to 2.5 Left ...then,,,2nd take the saying the same as the first paned to 2.5 RIght. . Next Adlibs i do drastic pan about 12 Left...And Finally Last Adlibs (saying about the same) drastic pan RIght at 12...always Compress....&Denoise/Dehiss vocals ..Add treble to vocals and take some bass out of them

  • do you think i should use something simple like cool edit pro

  • @taddison2 well u could but, it doesn't matter which program u use

  • @maltcus how do i use v vocal for some reson wene i right click i dont see the v vocqal settings ???????????????????????@

  • @TheLilscrip If you have a Sonar 1 - 4 you do not have v - vocal. If you are using sonar le or music creator you will not have v - vocal. If you are using any other smaller cakewalk products you will not have v - vocal. If you have like sonar 7 home studio or sonar home studio 8 I believe you should have it. Which cakewalk software are you using??

  • @ maltcus thanks man ight i see i have sonar 6 LE ..so is free to upgrade to like home edition or some thing ???? and second think i have to ask u is a samson co1u able to give high quality sounds????

  • @maltcus im wondering why when people teach MIXING that you need to have the beat and all its stems in order to properly fit vocals ina track this is the most important feature of mixing vocals so lets say you get the beat you can make space for the lead vocal and its backing tracks to sit in the mix im just being real cause in the most pro situation and i mean major studio a beat will have all its stems and not be a single stereo file

  • i have a question . my recording sounds like crap when listen to it in the car.. how can i fix it?

  • @taddison2 I will have to do a video to really go over everything but, the reason why is because you need to learn how your system and room sound. a lot of people are going to tell you u need to have you room treated right. have the best speakers etc... which is true to a point. The best thing I can tell you right now. Buy a cd out of the store that is close to the type of music you do. if you use a lot of bass find a song with alot of bass. compare your songs to the one on the cd. no mp3

  • "mono means that... you know how you have a left, you have a right? that makes it stereo."

    lol. priceless.

  • @Buhzie15 "Its not Stereo,...means that i dont sound like two people"...priceless..

  • if you recording the 1 and second verse on the same track . What if the second verse is louder than the first verse. Somebody told me to record the 1 verse on the track one, then record second verse on the second track., but you said people starting out always record a verse down on each track. so how would i level my first and second verses on the same track????

  • @taddison2 Good question. Now if the 1st verse is person number one and verse 2 is person number 2 then the volume may be different. In that case I will use a volume envelope to adjust down or up to even the volume but since I do that on my preamp I never have to do that. In other words if person 1 is louder then person 2 I turn up person 2. Sometimes you may have to start a whole new track but, trust me you do not have to 99% of the time.

  • Hi, I have the EMU 0202 USB sound card. How can I get it to apply a voice compression in real-time like yours. My Sound card hardware came with a software called mixcraft.

  • @sammy2joe Did you ever get the answer you were looking for? because I want to know the same thing? or what sound card does he use?

  • @StreatEntertainment I use the Emu PCI 0404 soundcard.

  • yo bra..what type of sound card do u have.??

  • emu 0404. a simple but decent sounding card

  • WHAT IS THE NAAM

    TURKISH BOY

  • Good vid...i Have a question thou....how do you monitor your voice through the headphones while recording to make sure you flow good with the beat......i have a windows vista laptop how do you do it?

  • i use a analog mixer for that. I can do a video on how i have it hooked up

  • I use the Sonitus compresser and my favorite starting point is the soft vocal preset. Then I make the changes from there

  • @maltcus hey bro....i just got a dbx 166xl..and i was wondering if you could give me a few tips on setting it up for rap vocals..(eminem style vocals) please help me out..my voice is too sharp..i need to warm it up..help me please

  • Em is very good is stacking his vocals. So try to be on time when u do 2nds and 3rds. as far as compression. You want to make the vocals smooth without any major peaks. At the same time not suck the quality out of them. I know someone who has the dbx and he says its not good on vocals. Now I have not used it so I can not confirm that but, its what I heard. Also try cuting the lower feq on the eq. That will also give u a cleaner sound. I will do a video talking more about vocals. Its in the works

  • hey man where you find the compressor at ?

  • hey man why isit that everytime i want to hear my voice while i record theres a delay on the headphones?

  • are you sending that track to a bus and using the effect in real time?

  • nope what i do is open a blank template create 2 audio tracks drag and drop the instrumental in the 1st audio track and i arm to record on the second one but if i click on thats next to the arm to record button i can hear myself but theres a delay :\

  • sounds like you need to go to options - audio. on that you she see mixing latency. you will see a slider that goes horizontal. Left says Fast and the right says safe. You may have to slide it down closer to fast If you are using Asio then you won't be able to adjust that slider. Try that and tell me if it works

  • thanx bro u my favorite subscribtions of 2009 man for real u giving a lotta info for free and i appreciate dat. 5/5

  • @kind1277 your welcome got so much more comin

  • "you may wanna go to audio..woah, Options."

I got no idea why, Maybe cause i'm still a little high, Bud that made me laugh.

    Anyway. Nice tutorial

  • @v3nuzbeats yea sometimes its hard cause I get ahead of myself

  • maltcus, im having trouble...what do run through the master bus, subgroup bus and effects?? do you you record first and then add your effects or you can while you recording???????

  • wut hardware compressor u have?? i got a dbx 166xl is that good

  • its good. not the best but, will do the job. I don't use a hardware compressor. Even tho I should I use the compressor that came with my soundcard I have the emu 0404 pci card. Its sounds really good

  • I use a compressor as I am recording vocals. Then maybe a soft compression after I get it in my daw(Sonar)

  • what do you have your lexicon set on?

  • I normally start with the lead vocal preset and turn the mix down. If I need to make any other changes I do. That is my starting point

  • I Need Help!!!! I have been trying to work with Sonar at my friend's studio. However, each time we try to do a dub track / another track we keep getting all of the audio from the previously recorded track or tracks recorded on to the most recently recorded track. How can we record multiple tracks without having that problem.

  • wow well without knowing your setup. The first thing that comes to mind is you either A - not using head phones and you are listening from your speakers. Then the mic is picking up whats plaing on your speakers. Or B - you are getting what is called head phone leakage. When you record your vocals and the music is up so loud the mic is picking up the music thru your head phones.

  • i have to use audacity :[

  • what do you have your lexicon set on?

  • Thata a good video ffam i ve been looking for something lie this for about a year. ive been chopping the vocal up to even it... How did you get it to become even did you put it on the mic imput im using cubase 4. Get back at me thanks.

  • very interesting

    5*****

  • Thanks I get a lot of question on this subject. Its hard to cover everything single thing in one video.

  • thanks and how do I remove the echo from the headphones when recording?

  • nice vid.

    good info...

  • can u go on ustream and show me how to do this? this is french to me right now!

  • Good video.

  • and oh yea i would like to know some tips for mix and mastering a track

  • thanks for the tip
