  • And still someone disliked it! Cannot believe :)

  • @badcatinbronx: There are so many ignorant people out there. Probably an American christian. Some of those guys thing everything connected to a different culture and tradition of religion or spiritual belief is the work of the devil. *rolls eyes*

  • Noh and Kyogen are very ancient arts of Japan. Sanbaso is much older--it originally was a kind of sacred dance or ceremony to pray for prosperity and fertility. The full performance includes three dancers, Okina, Senzai and Sanbaso. The name Sanbaso seems to indicate 'number 3, old man'. But as you can see, a very energetic old man, maybe with divine power. The drum patterns of this piece are unlike anything else in Japanese culture. The drums are tsuzumis, a very unique instrument.

  • fantastical, frightening, exzhilirating, powerful, furious beautiful, cotrolled fury,....that's what i see/feel,...never seen anything like it....thanx so much for the explanation,...yet it is awesome with no explanation at all,...it just IS,....

  • The actor is one my mine and my wife's favorites. Mansai Nomura. He took sometime out from his 'Kyougen' performances to star in two movies called "Onmyoji" (aka 'The Ying Yang Master') both I and II. We have them on DVD.

  • Yes, it looks like part of the opening ceremony that marks the begining of the theatre season on the Noh (Nôgaku) stage. The character is Sambasô. He represents all the forms of traditional Japanese drama (Nôgaku, Bunraku, Kabuki).

  • Could anyone knidly say what is going on in the video? What kind of act is it? What is the actor doing? What is he singing about? Thanks!

  • ①Thank you for the message.

In the first half, danced without putting on the mask part, it is the ground that he steps powerfully firmly, and expresses the prayer that calms down the ground soul. In the latter half, danced putting on the mask part, he obtains the bell that moulds the rice ear, his dance expresses operation that sows seed in the field.

  • Thank you! I thought It might be a prayer because the actor moves a lot not quite dancing but clearly doing something special.

  • ②In "Kyougen" that is the traditional entertainment of Japan , "Sanbasou" is a very auspicious and a sacred dance. And praying for the good harvest and peace is a theme.

The dialog is an old word of Japan. Therefore, I cannot catch what he says accurately. Overall, they are words of celebration.

I'm sorry for being not able to do a detailed explanation.

  • Oh thanks so much for answering my questions, you've been really helpful! :-)

  • Is this Mansai Nomura? Thank you so very much for posting this amazingly wonderful clip! Arigato gozaimasu
