You might have to do a whole separate video called "Best Jobs for Introverts Who Aren't Good at Math." Practically the entire final list consisted of jobs with a heavy demand for math skills.
To be happy at work, one must have one of three abilities: people skills, math skills, or physical strength. I have none of these. My strengths are art and memorization, but in this computerized work world there is no demand for either.
I applied for a job at Macys and Nordstrom, and they both give personality tests designed to SPECIFICALLY weed out the introvert!. Im able to beat the test because i know what theyre doing, but still, you'd think they would want to weed out some ex-cons, child molesters, undercover terrorist...but noo, they want to get those strange "introverts" before we even make it to the interview! lol
I'm an introvert and I love being by myself. I crawl out of my cubby hole and visit and be around people and when Ive had enough I crawl right back into my blissful cubby hole and recharge.
I've just found out that im an introvert people think that im just shy or dont like to talk but no it is because of me being an introvert i love who i am.
Sometimes I feel like I've mastered one-on-one conversation but I've completely failed at speaking in groups. It seems like extroverts do the exact opposite, almost like it's an innate competition in the person to stand out and be admired.
One trick I've learned for my professional life--whenever I'm in meetings, interviews, etc. is to pretend like everyone in the room is a best friend or family member I haven't seen in years. I hate being fake more than anything, but it works for me.
the top careers seem geared towards the computer loving introverts and not the artistic introvert. I love animation which takes patience and concentration a very introverted art.
i have always been "shy" and not beeinga ble to do what i want. I sort of want to reach out to people, but even when im cofident itsn ot like i go around talk with everybody. Im cool add my opinion enjoy the social situation. Im shy in the way of that i get nervous when i speak sometimes. But when i get confident i like telling stories. Cant there be something in between?
i dunno which i am, sometimes i feel social situations are "stupid" and i have no interest of acting stupid just because everyone else is. But sometimes i get really spontanious, I really enjoy myself in social situations. Sometimes I really want to talk to the person next to me. But also i am a little bit unsure of what i want. Example i want to speak to a person but i just speak about boring things like "whats up in summer" to finally get somewhere interesting. time2time i lose energy from ppl
I am definitely an introvert... I hated working in an office and often preferred people left me alone to do my job without constant micromanaging. I highly valued independence. I also preferred corresponding via email over phone. I would look at my phone in disgust when it rang. I am like that even with my cell phone. I prefer to be alone. When too many people are around me, I get frazzled out quickly. In social settings I do well (not shy) but glad to get home so I can internalize it all.
I am that exact same way. But I think I'm a little more introverted vs. extroverted, because being alone energizes me and social situations (which I try to avoid unless it's loved ones) do the opposite.
People can be in the middle; a book I am reading calls those people "centroverts".
I am that exact same way, not totally sure either and I KNOW I have social phobia.
But I think I'm a little more introverted vs. extroverted, because being alone energizes me and social situations (which I try to avoid unless it's loved ones) do the opposite.

I appreciate your post. I was thinking of trying it and I think now that I won't, unless it's solely online marketing. That's one thing we can do ! In prior times, I think there was a lot more work for introverted or shy people which is now done by technology, but on the other hand a thing like selling online has now opened up to us.
I think with 'intro" occupations such as engineering & architecture, it is extroverts who succeed because professionals must be able to deal with clients, manage staff, make sales, take risks, play politics (always calculating the motive & moves of everyone else) etc. Introverts are more suited to tech jobs -managers just hand them the jobs. Great education is no help when you find high EQ people pushing you out. You like 'the project', they like ' the people game'. Guess who wins!
@sh0x747 Thanks for your comment. You should be aware that career information is a moving target. This table is based on O*NET Release 11, which was the most up-to-date version at the time I created the presentation. Since that release, many of the occupations (including Drywall and Ceiling Tile Installers) have been given new ratings. I hope to find the time to update this and other tables in the presentation.
Im very introverted. However, i am stdying early education and child care and am thinking about going on to do social work..Im not very sure if i would be satisfied in either of these paths,as an introvert however they do gratly appeal to me.Hmm tricky.
I HATE EXTROVERTS. They dont understand introverts & make us feel like pathetic losers. Extroverts deserve to be gunned down by introvert has been made to feel bad. I love those lonely kids going on a rampage ,killing more social people in schools & colleges.
What a disgusting thing to say. I would never wish death upon anyone because they get along a little better in the world than myself, and I'm pretty sure that the culprits of those kind of attacks are firing indiscriminately.
Also, I would definitely prefer to surrounded by extroverts than people than you.
@gurugoogly2 Thanks to them, an extrovert-dominated society now believes in the stereotype that introversion = antisocial behavior. While I understand where the hatred of extroverts is coming from (them being the most common source of ridicule and social injustice), it doesn't help anyone if we support extreme acts of violence.
The only way you might conclude that extroverts are more artistic would be to observe that in the Holland hexagon of personality types, the Artistic type is adjacent to the Social type. These two personality types probably do share some characteristics, and performing artists show the extroverted trait of drawing energy from their audiences. On the other hand, painters, sculptors, graphic artists, and other nonperformers often work in situations that suit introverts.
This seems kind of contradictory to me. It says that extroverts are more artistic, but then on the next slide it lists all the qualities of the introvert which pretty much amount to what you need to be an artist.
Give me a big thumbs down if you are also an introverted musician.
Most of these job really excited me! I found working alone entering data into a com0puter all day very exciting and when I think of it the stress melts away.True sign of an introvert? hehehehe
it's sad how a lot of people still think being shy means being introverted.. I'm an introvert and still very outgoing and speak my mind and converse with people, Just not as much as my extroverted counter parts.. I like my alone time.. I ENJOY it.. I love having people to share my ideas and concepts with but I'm not a complete social nut the has to befriend everyone i see.. I like to think and I like to share my thoughts..
Im an introvert but for me its like this...I CAN enjoy social events BUT no matter what, I WILL feel drained after the event. I perfer to work alone, yes but it doesnt mean I "HATE" to work with others.
Before I enter the door at work each day, I always say to myself "get into character" like Samuel Jackson said to John Travolta in 'Pulp Fiction.' My co-workers used to ask if I want to go out or to parties, and I always make an excuse. They don't realize I prefer to be alone or just with my family. My neighbors sometimes ask if I want to come over for get togethers. I feel this sense of dread when I can't mak a plausible excuse and have to go. I'm not a snob. I just feel drained.
also, introvert is not loner. that's two different things. an introvert is someone that is socially reserved. they may go out to wild parties dayly and never be alone. it's not a lifestyle, it's an attitude.
When my phone rang, i got real pissed. When someone bother me, i got real pissed. I think Facebook is lame and meaningless. I enjoy email and chat more than talking. I can't stand when someone keep on texting and call to have a meaningless conversation. I always make the good progress when working alone. I like nature, reading, gardening, drawing, listening to music, and practicing piano alone! am i an introvert?
Wait I'm an introvert yet I'm actually quite good at art, I cannot for the life of me talk to more than 2 strangers or more yet I always have music going on in the background (more to drown out external noises i.e. people)
I noticed that most of the jobs listed here are math/science based. I just want to say that just because a person is introverted does not mean they with be good at math/science, at least I'm not. These jobs would be more suitable for left brained introverts.
There are introverts, like myself, that likes be creative (like cake decoratoring, drawing, etc.) and use it towards their work...and be left the hell alone.
Aren't most scientist/engineers, people that actually make a difference, introverts? If so, explains why I also wanted to be, and still want to be one.
I like people, but I feel more comfortable when I am alone, because I can focus on myself and gain energy. Because so many jobs require the ability to be sociable all the time and work with groups often, I find it difficult to find an appealing job. I would much rather talk to anyone one on one than big groups, and HATE small talk. I feel that if there is not a direct reason to be talking, I shouldn't have to, and engage in small talk out of necessity, not enjoyment.
If you love being around people, that's not very introverted. Introverts tend to find their energy drained by having a lot of people around and trying to deal with them.
By the way, I agree with your opinion of the "either-or" of the Myers-Briggs. On most psychological measures, people tend to cluster toward the middle, where being slightly to one side or the other is not very significant. And, given the measurement error of the assessment, you could well be on the opposite side.
@careervideoguy I dont think that is entirely true, that sentence about not enjoying being around people I mean. The part about not being around TOO many people is right though.
I dont mind a few individuals and I like being around people sometimes, but I dont like big crowds or too much noise.
I don't know what to think of this video. I'm an introvert, but I'm certainly not conventional or realistic. I'm more artistic and investigative and I love being around people and helping them. I've taken the MB test and found it restrictive, as I could only be one or the other, and that's simply not true for me.
Out of 640 occupations, I rate this one 192nd on introversion--meaning the average of its ratings for working alone and working out of contact with others. That, plus its high economic rewards, earned it a place in my book. Yes, many financial analysts may do networking (everybody should do some for job security), but the essential work functions are mostly solitary. It should be very possible to find a niche within this occupation for someone who is introverted.
I am not 100% sure but I think that many people think that quiet people are weak or smth. like this. It is like they can pick on you because you are quiet but when you response in a negative way they think you are agressive and it puts them off. I like being on my own most of the time. I am forced to work in a store and I have nothing to talk about with "local people" as they are narrow minded. They only talk about how they got drunk on Friday night. I hate all these low paid jobs for foreigners
i have social phobia and am a really good writer. my AP english teacher says im one of the best if not the best in the class... sometimes when i get a project i dont do it to the last minute. i sometimes work for 4-5 hours strait not being distracted or getting sidedtracked by anything even tho i hate it.. i hate going to parties and i think facebook and texting r stupid. im 18 and am greatly intrigued by the sociology and psychology of my peers even tho i hav anxiety about school. am i introver
im introvertedas far as i know.. i have social phobia or avoidance personality disorder but am obnoxious and sometimes annoying , singing and stuff at home...but i think texting and facebook are stupid and i cant stand those stupid douchebag kids at school. is my social phobia hiding my extroversion? or am i just an introvert.. im so confused. is there some kind of test
I have my dream job, that of a proofreader. I get to use my Business English skills and creativity to make tax accountants sound impressive in their correspondence. It's challenging, enjoyable, and my work environment is as quiet as a library. I feel fortunate.
it kinda pisses me off how this world is dominated by extroverts. It's like were living in a world that wasn't made for introverts. If I can't beat them maybe I should join em and really give em a run for their money.
@MegaDreamer88, I agree. Every job seems to want you to be an extrovert So many times in my career, my innate abilities seem to have been trumped by those with less ability who are getting by on fluff, not quality of work. This just seems totally unreasonable, I really question how this can be truly profitable, many companies have been brought down by politics. It's like discrimination, why should everyone in the world be expected to be extroverted as if it somehow means better? Not always.
@arnabc2003 True this man people think that extroverts rule the world but this is FALSE.
The fact it is that introverts rule this world but the ones who rule are so highly developt they seem extrovert very often. But deep down they are still introverts. On a side note tho the majority of people are extroverted that is why introvert people think the world gets dominated by them.
@ landth78: I realized that about myself a few years ago. I knew I wasn't shy but I couldn't find the correct term to describe it till last night. @ hgudoy: That's highly immature.
My favorite jobs are the repetitive ones, for some reason. The best one i've had was actually at a hardboard factory, soaking and shaping hardboard for the backs of car seats. You got a pallet of 1000 flat panels, and put them in a 450 degree (temp) press to shape them, then repeat. Plenty of white noise in the background. It was really dangerous and for some reason really enjoyable.
introverted people are like stars, they shine brightly but do so from the inside out. they are few and far from planets and astroids and stabilize the heavens around them. they are there own energy source..
I just realized tonight how extremely introverted I am :S
I was at the movie theatre with about 30 employees and I was told there was going to be a "Christmas dinner" ... Everyone piled into people's cars and I just made up an excuse of why I had to go home to avoid going to Boston Pizza with all the other employees -- Its just so awkward and nerve wracking for me to hang out with them especially since I just got this job
I find that ok though .I think if I were in your position I would have judged how the others acted towards me in general ,and decide from there. If I didn't enjoy their company I would have gone home too.
This video, though encouraging, hits the mark by a lot. I'm an SEA on the Holland typology AND an introvert. I enjoy working with people, but one-on-one, not in groups or crowds. Being introverted does not mean one prefers being alone, although time alone to process thoughts is desirable. So, the idea that SEA types are more extroverted is simply not true. I prefer the MB test and find it an amazingly accurate and specific assessment of my personality. P.S. Email/Chat = godsend for introverts!
I'm very skeptical of the MB assessment, which seems to be the basis of your considering yourself an introvert. But maybe you have other reasons for calling yourself introverted. More important, I should point out that my selection of introverted occupations for the book was NOT based on Holland code ratings; it was based on O*NET ratings for the value Independence and the work context Contact With Others.
I believe you'll find more of the introverted occupations at the top of the Holland hexagon, but there are exceptions. I agree that e-mail and chat can be introvert-friendly, but only when they're configured so they don't pop up and interrupt you while you're working on other things.
Various psychological/career testing has revealed my introverted orientation. The MB does not place individuals into 16 rigid typologies; but rather, each individual demonstrates a unique composition of each function represented by percentages. I've also worked with O*NET and it's useful for research, not for determining a career based upon values/work context etc. It's unfortunately incompetent in this area. The true indicator is one of natural abilities/personality.
i happen to be drawn inside myself and highly artistic. i have trouble finding jobs too cause i don't think people like to be around introverted people. some of us like myself don't really mean any harm. i talk, but not trash. it's like people find it offensive like intros are mad at them or something. i guess it is weird to them, specially if you're a young black female who happens to be cute and quiet.
no wonder I never liked any of my previous jobs

I noticed that most of the jobs listed here are math/science based. I just want to say that just because a person is introverted does not mean they with be good at math/science, at least I'm not. These jobs would be more suitable for left brained introverts.
paperorpaper 1 year ago 11
@paperorpaper I agree.
There are introverts, like myself, that likes be creative (like cake decoratoring, drawing, etc.) and use it towards their work...and be left the hell alone.

Aren't most scientist/engineers, people that actually make a difference, introverts? If so, explains why I also wanted to be, and still want to be one.
HybridD91 1 year ago
I like people, but I feel more comfortable when I am alone, because I can focus on myself and gain energy. Because so many jobs require the ability to be sociable all the time and work with groups often, I find it difficult to find an appealing job. I would much rather talk to anyone one on one than big groups, and HATE small talk. I feel that if there is not a direct reason to be talking, I shouldn't have to, and engage in small talk out of necessity, not enjoyment.

@moviefreak91, I like people, but I hate sales jobs.

This is great info for me, because I see I am an introvert mostly, but I have a few extrovert tendencies
floppies 1 year ago
If you love being around people, that's not very introverted. Introverts tend to find their energy drained by having a lot of people around and trying to deal with them.
By the way, I agree with your opinion of the "either-or" of the Myers-Briggs. On most psychological measures, people tend to cluster toward the middle, where being slightly to one side or the other is not very significant. And, given the measurement error of the assessment, you could well be on the opposite side.
careervideoguy 1 year ago 5

It should be very possible to find a niche within this occupation for someone who is introverted.
careervideoguy 1 year ago
I am interested in Financial Analyst. From what ive read there is a lot of networking and social functions for such a profession?

I am not 100% sure but I think that many people think that quiet people are weak or smth. like this. It is like they can pick on you because you are quiet but when you response in a negative way they think you are agressive and it puts them off. I like being on my own most of the time. I am forced to work in a store and I have nothing to talk about with "local people" as they are narrow minded. They only talk about how they got drunk on Friday night. I hate all these low paid jobs for foreigners

im introvertedas far as i know.. i have social phobia or avoidance personality disorder but am obnoxious and sometimes annoying , singing and stuff at home...but i think texting and facebook are stupid and i cant stand those stupid douchebag kids at school. is my social phobia hiding my extroversion? or am i just an introvert.. im so confused. is there some kind of test

@MegaDreamer88 If it makes you feel better, the creator of Facebook seems like an introvert. :-)
VocalVerve 1 year ago
@MegaDreamer88, I agree. Every job seems to want you to be an extrovert So many times in my career, my innate abilities seem to have been trumped by those with less ability who are getting by on fluff, not quality of work. This just seems totally unreasonable, I really question how this can be truly profitable, many companies have been brought down by politics. It's like discrimination, why should everyone in the world be expected to be extroverted as if it somehow means better? Not always.
jtking2504 6 months ago
@MegaDreamer88 nah man, extroverts don't run this world... in fact it's probably the other way around... we just can't see the guys who do ;)
arnabc2003 4 months ago

Everyone piled into people's cars and I just made up an excuse of why I had to go home to avoid going to Boston Pizza with all the other employees -- Its just so awkward and nerve wracking for me to hang out with them especially since I just got this job
landth78 2 years ago 3

USGirl22 2 years ago 6
I'm very skeptical of the MB assessment, which seems to be the basis of your considering yourself an introvert. But maybe you have other reasons for calling yourself introverted. More important, I should point out that my selection of introverted occupations for the book was NOT based on Holland code ratings; it was based on O*NET ratings for the value Independence and the work context Contact With Others.
careervideoguy 2 years ago
I believe you'll find more of the introverted occupations at the top of the Holland hexagon, but there are exceptions. I agree that e-mail and chat can be introvert-friendly, but only when they're configured so they don't pop up and interrupt you while you're working on other things.
careervideoguy 2 years ago
*Misses the mark by a lot*
Various psychological/career testing has revealed my introverted orientation. The MB does not place individuals into 16 rigid typologies; but rather, each individual demonstrates a unique composition of each function represented by percentages. I've also worked with O*NET and it's useful for research, not for determining a career based upon values/work context etc. It's unfortunately incompetent in this area. The true indicator is one of natural abilities/personality.

yeah I agree with the other comments, A LOT of very artistic people are strongly introverted.
AshenIdol 2 years ago 2
dang! you know a lot about introverts.
i happen to be drawn inside myself and highly artistic. i have trouble finding jobs too cause i don't think people like to be around introverted people. some of us like myself don't really mean any harm. i talk, but not trash. it's like people find it offensive like intros are mad at them or something. i guess it is weird to them, specially if you're a young black female who happens to be cute and quiet.
iamsomebody2009 2 years ago 5
Your not an introvert your just shy there is a difference . Just looking at your post tells me that .
WatchToddPattison 2 years ago
Honesty, i consider 'artistic' as being more introverted. If you read on many artists/ musicians, you'd find that a good 90% of them are introverts.

I own "200 Best Jobs for Introverts." Nice that this video helps to explain folks like me.
perri6 2 years ago 6
silly they should say artistic means extroverted, as id say its more introverted.
but either way, they restrict introverts by making them seem a completely different category to extroverts.
categories really, really annoy me.
