I loved Metallica's music when they were using melodic minor scales, had a great Metal guitar tone, agressive riffs, social criticism in their lyrics, rebelious attitude...That's Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All and the Balack Album to some extend. Death Magnetic had a little bit of that but the sound production is horrible and I really don't like Hetfield's guitar tone. I've been a fan for 25 years, been really disapointed since Load...Oh well, I still respect.

Metallica Inc has an in house guy that's a staff producer/engineer at "the bunker". Your boss asks you "does this riff sound cool" and of course you say, "hell yeah bossman". When you want to record something, you do. The riffs are good old Hetfield, but the tainted ear of Lars shows its effect on all their albums. No bass on Justice, No thrash on Black, No metal on Load/reload, No snare on St anus, No mastering on DM. Lars must be hard to say no to, and shits gone to far now.

Anyway, Every album has had their own style of drums, riffs, and vocals. There's not set formula or rules to make music. That's what Metallica has believed in from the start. Pretty good, but the vocals kinda ruin it for me. Now don't go ranting about "rargh its 2012 lets see you have the same vocals for 30 years." I understand that, but the fact that the vocals are different ruin it for me, it doesn't sound anything like thrash metal without thrashy vocals. Also look at other thrash bands, they still have their vocals, like Kreator or Sodom and even Slayer. Then Death Metal bands whose vocals are at least twice as extreme as thrash vocals are still going strong.
