Is it a bad idea to see this as a love song? Haha jk. And enough debate! Its about Pinks over-protective mother who helps him build his mental wall that blocks him from the rest of the world! Nothing else! So enough debate!
No, not weird. This song like others in this time period are songs that I grew up listening to, I'm a child of the 70's. I was in my early 20's at the time the Wall came out, I was in the military at the time (I actually watch this movie on the military base I was stationed on the time). Every generation has the music of "their" time. I hear a lot of the younger generation say they enjoy the songs of my generation, nothing wrong with that. Our generation don't mind sharing.
My mother was, to some extent, a wall herself that I was banging my head against. She lived her life in the service of others. She was a school teacher. But it wasn't until I was 45, 50 years old that I realised how impossible it was for her to listen to me."
Mojo asked Waters if his mother saw herself in the song? He replied: "She's not that recognisable. The song is more general, the idea that we can be controlled by our parents' views on things like sex.
Waters went on to admit to Mojo that the overly protective suffocating mother portrayed in the song has some similarities to his own mum. He said: "My mother was suffocating in her own way. She always had to be right about everything. I'm not blaming her. That's who she was. I grew up with a single parent who could never hear anything I said, because nothing I said could possibly be as important as what she believed.
Waters told Mojo magazine December 2009: "The song has some connection with my mother, for sure, though the mother that Gerald Scarfe visualises in his drawings couldn't be further from mine. She's nothing like that." (For the film version of The Wall, cartoonist Gerald Scarfe visualised the mother as a huge monstrous woman with a brick-wall bosom.)
Roger Waters: "If you can level one accusation at mothers, it is that they tend to protect their children too much. Too much and for too long. This isn't a portrait of my mother, although one or two of the things in there apply to her as well as to I'm sure lots of other people's mothers."
do you think for me its weird im a 13 year old girl and i love pink floyed, kansas and which ones pink my dad told me about these bands and i seem to like them
@skatedreampower not at all. i am 16 year old half deaf and a proud satanist. its just music. (AWSOME music at that.) it doesnt matter who you are or what your look like or anything. all that matters is that you have good taste in music. ^.^ if that makes any sense.
This song is a loved song in my family. I'm ten but yet, I know the beatles, and all the good songs, I understand them, I wish you were her also stands for my family.
so beautiful and intelligent! after so many years... the lyric of this song is still valid and reflect current situation of so many countries in this world.....

@AJRead2 I'm a 15 year old guy, and I love this band. These new rap songs are only famous for a few months then get burned out. But these guys are forever
@AJRead2 It's not strange, I first started listening to Pink Floyd in 1972, I was 15. I am 54 and still enjoy it daily. Hearing kids like you are listening, restores my faith that my generations music will live on. Be proud to know real music. My children appreciate music, and their children will do too.
@AJRead2 Music you're supposed to be listening to? Just because mainstream music is blowing up everywhere, it doesn't mean you're supposed to be listening to it. Kids always make a big deal about liking good music. Hell, I'm a kid and I don't think it's special that I choose to listen to Floyd over the other "musicians".
@warcraftgirljulia Uhm no it's not weird at all, my thirteen year old brother has been listening to pink floyd since he was like seven. It's a thing called exposure and taste. Each depend upon you, your life, your singular situation and perspective on life. Nothing's weird about anything, or rather everything is weird. But liking music is not weird, especially very well composed music such as this. It doesn't matter, don't be so quick to label yourself it makes you seem shallow. The End.
its about a young boy that loses his father in the war and is raised by his overly protective mother. The child grows up alone as an outsider that absolutely does not fit in. He feels trapped by his overly protective environment while being shunned by the people around him. and when he says she is building a wall, he means she just wants the two to be trapped in a wall with only each other. It says, 'mother, did it have to be so high" because she built that wall too high. did that help?
@Aragorn2673 Roger Waters built the wall not his mother. The song is off the album "the wall" which represents the wall he built around himself to separate himself from society.

Mother symbolizes the repressive and tyrannical powers of government intruding in the private affairs of individuals that Pink sponsors when he gains influence and power and begins discriminating against audience members based on race and sexual preference. In the song, "mother" devolves from being a protective agent, to being a suppresson of individual rights. This song is a reminder that sometimes seemingly benign actions of social institutions slowly become sources of tyrannical oppression.
@WickedlyBeautiful1: I understand that. I am providing an interprative perspective. In a text, whether it be literature, music, or in this case a combination of the two characters serve deep, symbolic purposes apart from their necessary functions as drivers of plot and the action of any particular work of narrative art.
53artsy In fact I have, and I appreciate that you bring it up because the film is rife with imagery that links Pinks rise to success with the rise to success of a facist or nationalist party similar to the Nazis (the symbol of his band alludes to the symbolism of the USSR and of Nazis). @vitospericolato Its referring to any protective force out there. It can mothers but in society who do we look to to protect us? Unlike figueroa661 says its not social institutions but protection from dangers from the "outside". Hes asking his mother about all these things that could possibly hurt him, and the mother is responding by building "The Wall" around him which is no more healthy because as its says in the song fears aren't solved, just passed on and in the process becomes repressive.
@figueroa661 or it could be about a kid whose mom is overprotective and his questions about life and how to navigate its many obstacles. war, love, the machine and the question to live and have pain or to run away and hide to avoid pain and thus all the beauty that comes from love/hate/heartbreak isolation belonging art violence and so on.
Mother do you think, she'll break my heart?Mother Do you think she is dangerous?is it just a waist of time?I did think she was good enough, now i think she is dangerous' you have been torn to pieces! Somethimes, we mother are left to pick up the pieces when our sons heart has been broken terribly!!!!!!!!!!
