Notice how he doesn't like her till she grows up to be beautiful rather than falling in love with her personality or slowly falling in love based on a forming friendship. No they hate each other till they see that the other has grown up to be hot. and then Derek wants to marry her. But its a cute movie in the end with some classic songs.

@Nefret8789 In a way, but you can also view it as the classic situation that if kids like eachother they are mean to eachother. Just like Helga from Hey Arnold. So perhaps he did have feelings but expressed them meanly until he was mature enough to realize that those feelings were of affection.

As much as i love this movie there are a few things that have always bugged me and bug me more now that i'd older. 1) where's odette's mom? 2) why the parents never age even as their children do? 3) why did Odette have to go from being cool and keeping up with the boys to helpless damsel? Being cursed is one thing, but do something! like peck his damn eyes out! 4) why does the creepy old lady go from evil sidekick to working for Odette. I don't recall any remorse coming her.

@emscott32 No, black swan is based on a ballet performance of swan lake, this is a cartoon adaptation of the same ballet. in this version the black swan is rothbarts little assistant women (the little old lady that talks like yoda), in the actual story of swan lake it's rothbarts daughter who he makes look like odette via magic.

As far as movie openings go, this always struck me as a bit weak; the relationship between the two leads is poorly-established and we never really get what triggered the bad guy onto his current path...

The subsequent plot isn't BAD, but the Derek/Odette thing just isn't established in a realistic enough manner for me to feel that Derek's legitimately serious about it later on

You know... I never noticed this, but... this movie and Sleeping Beauty are quite similar... well, the beginnings are. But at the same time, sort of the opposite.

I mean, Derek first saw Odette when she was a baby, just like how Philip did with Aurora, only... Derek was sweeter to her and gave her a necklace but grew up sort of hating her, while Philip just wrinkled his nose at her - and her cooties! XD -, but ended up falling in love with her later. :3
