One of the best scenes from LOTR ever! It always makes me tear-up when I see Eldarion.
FYI: Eldarion is her son's name.
FYI again: the name of the elf who says, "My lady Arwen, we cannot delay..." is named Aegnor and he is Galadriel's brother according to the Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien!
@bht9234 She dies alone, brokenhearted in the Lothlorien forest after Aragorn dies. Elrond forsaw this, you can't blame a father wanting to protect her daughter.
@MyFlame1000 Yes, but in life we can't have everything and I think that this vision of the future is much better than that one in which she saw herself as a widow, don't you think?
Guys...sad thing is she bears Aragon 3 children and then when Aragon dies she goes back to where her mother and grandmother were and they all left for the ships....so she lies down on the grass in the forest and dies of a broken heart.
@jaarekparf It's true....I cried I really did. Arwen chose love insted of choosing her father...female elves only have that choice. It was impossible for her to love anyone else but Aragorn.
@CathannahShowani No....I think it's perfect the way it went. Female Elves only get one love of their life and Arwen chose Aragon. If she hadn't stayed...she'd be regreting it her whole life. Atleast she loved...than to loose love for eternity.
should have let it go to when she dropped the book... :( What an amazing movie. I'm in university, and they teach you how to analyze and close read things (books/films). But, i would really not rather analyze this with any intellect. This movie is so great, and with scenes like this, the only way i like to watch it is with my heart, to feel it with my soul; not to analyze and be critical about it. The scenes like this are just so beautiful, they really connect with what is inside you. :)
I think that's part of the reason the scene is so powerful, though. The look on Eldarion's face just seems to say, " I love you so much, Mommy. Isn't it worth it to stay here with me?"
Arwen [Liv Tyler] had to cry *way* too much in that film. I hope that in *The Hobbit* [yes, she's there according to all the press releases] they give her some happy time.
They have AT LEAST two daughters, you mean :-/ Not only did Tolkien not name them, he didn't even say how many there were. He just referred to them in the plural, meaning there were at least 2.
They are beautiful, but they don't belong with mortals. It can only end in tragedy.
It is a point Tolkien made more than once.
The tale of Imrazor and Mithrellas is a case in point.
She bore him children, but simply disappeared one night never to be seen again, perhaps because she didn't feel comfortable in watching her husband age and die.
Could you really marry an elven lady, knowing that ultimately it would be 50 years of joy, followed by an eternity of separation?.
@loubo2 He really looks like he could be the child of Aragorn and Arwen - that was a beautiful casting job! Viggo's son I think was a teenager when LOTR was filmed so nope that's definitely not his son.
since the kid is half half, will he inherit the never dying gene of elvish or aragon's human life span? I'm guessing aragon's or an extended life span
Since his mother chose a mortal life and the Elvish grace passed away from Middle Earth before he was born, the son is mortal. In the books, it said that he lived for about 100 years. He got the Numernorean royalty longevity genes from his father, but he still did not live as long as Aragorn did.
what an unbelievably emotional scene - for a woman to look into the future and see her unborn child looking back at her, with the awful realization of all the life and love she was about to throw away
I do love the Elves. What makes me sad is that in virtually every incarnation, they are a dying people, or are departing from the world. I know, all things must come to an end, eventually- But the beauty and majesty of the Elves is partially what makes Lord of the Rings so appealing
That's quite untrue. Elves were always their own species, though they were based mostly on the Finnish people whose pral traditions were gradually dying out and whose legacy Tolkien wanted to protect. National Geographic did a documentary on it; you might want to watch it sometime.
@Serena2009ification yeah i saw it but it does mention of tolkiens true pure harmonic side of his people its kind of hard too go into detail or explain this
