There is a higher authority that the states Keyes: the people. And the Fourteenth Amendment states quite clearly that "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States." That includes people who are NOT Christians and their right of freedom to worship as they choose. Creating a state religion or endorsing one would abridge their rights, which is illegal. Nice try, but next time read the WHOLE Constitution first.

This is not personal against you, but you should think of this. Intelligent discourse actually requires lengthy explanations. Television has gradually destroyed our attention span to the point that we cannot listen to somebody talk for more than about 10 sec at a time. This limits the complexity of the arguments, and basically "dumbs" us down. Lengthy discussions were once (60's-70's)normal to see on adult television programs, but now it's rush rush rush...we only have 24 hrs of airtime!
The fact that you may hate another's ideas shouldn't stop you from having the attention span to listen and take his/her arguments on one by one. Now everybody may have somebody they cannot stand the voice of, but this is a more general thing. We have been slowly trained by our media to have a child's attention span. The only solution is to wean you self completely off corporate television and tv and train yourself by reading books or any other way you can think of to expand and open your mind.

the 14th amendment was used in the dred scott case in 1868, close to a century after the Constitution was ratified. Keyes is not overlooking anything due process was taken out of context even later than 1868.

Actually if you read the whole letter written to the Danbury minister you'll see that Alan Keys is absolutely correct. Read the letter that was written to him and the reply letter written by Jefferson which contain the phrase, "separation of church and state." There is a good book out on it called "Ten Tortured Words." The "disingenuous interpretation" is that of what American children have been brainwashed to think by secularist humanists.
Keyes seems to have overlooked the fact that, as per the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, the STATES are also obligated to respect most of the rights guaranteed in our Bill of Rights (including those found in the First Amendment).

The term Separation of church and state was taken out of a quote by Thomas Jefferson in his letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802 in which he was explaining the intent of the 1st amendment, in his letter he mentioned crating a wall of separation which was later misinterpreted. The Danbury Baptist Association was a small minority organization worried about the influence of larger Christian groups having too much legislative influence.

He's a great man. Unfortunately people in the electorate don't take too well to clear, logical and thorough discussion. They prefer amorphous comments that they can interpret any way they like. This is why Obama is so popular. Obama just uses a lot of ambiguous, unspecific wording that gives everyone a warm fuzzy feeling, but it means absolutely nothing. For someone who talks about how much he knows about the origins of the Constitution and the motives of the Founding Fathers, Keyes sure does skip a LOT of what they wrote to further explain the Establishment Clause and Exercise Clause.

There is a higher authority that the states Keyes: the people. And the Fourteenth Amendment states quite clearly that "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States." That includes people who are NOT Christians and their right of freedom to worship as they choose. Creating a state religion or endorsing one would abridge their rights, which is illegal. Nice try, but next time read the WHOLE Constitution first.

This is not personal against you, but you should think of this. Intelligent discourse actually requires lengthy explanations. Television has gradually destroyed our attention span to the point that we cannot listen to somebody talk for more than about 10 sec at a time. This limits the complexity of the arguments, and basically "dumbs" us down. Lengthy discussions were once (60's-70's)normal to see on adult television programs, but now it's rush rush rush...we only have 24 hrs of airtime!

The fact that you may hate another's ideas shouldn't stop you from having the attention span to listen and take his/her arguments on one by one. Now everybody may have somebody they cannot stand the voice of, but this is a more general thing. We have been slowly trained by our media to have a child's attention span. The only solution is to wean you self completely off corporate television and tv and train yourself by reading books or any other way you can think of to expand and open your mind.

the 14th amendment was used in the dred scott case in 1868, close to a century after the Constitution was ratified. Keyes is not overlooking anything due process was taken out of context even later than 1868.

That is the most disingenuous interpretation of the First Amendment I've ever heard.
True, the Constitution doesn't contain the term "separation of church and state." (The Bible doesn't use the word "trinity," for that matter.) But the CONCEPT is inherent in those words. How do we know? Because Thomas Jefferson, the man who WROTE those words, SAID that's what it meant! Honestly, how much more clarification does one need?
Keyes is eloquent, but his worldview is positively medieval.

Actually if you read the whole letter written to the Danbury minister you'll see that Alan Keys is absolutely correct. Read the letter that was written to him and the reply letter written by Jefferson which contain the phrase, "separation of church and state." There is a good book out on it called "Ten Tortured Words." The "disingenuous interpretation" is that of what American children have been brainwashed to think by secularist humanists.

Keyes seems to have overlooked the fact that, as per the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, the STATES are also obligated to respect most of the rights guaranteed in our Bill of Rights (including those found in the First Amendment).

The term Separation of church and state was taken out of a quote by Thomas Jefferson in his letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in 1802 in which he was explaining the intent of the 1st amendment, in his letter he mentioned crating a wall of separation which was later misinterpreted. The Danbury Baptist Association was a small minority organization worried about the influence of larger Christian groups having too much legislative influence.

Or prayer from schools, the Constitution does not give the federal government that power, only the states and the people respectively of those states have that power to remove those things that they might find offensive.

it was in response to a letter the baptist church in which they wrote "no man ought to suffer in name, person, or effects on account of his religious opinions"
thus his stating "I contemplate with sovereign reverence" is him regretting that it ppl had come down to bashing other religions and saying they have no say in government.

Jefferson was asked to clarify to the Danbury Baptists what the Establishment Clause (which he wrote) actually meant. His "wall of separation" comment was in response to that request.
Jefferson was extremely tolerant of all religious beliefs, and he understood the importance of having people of faith participate in government. But he realized how important it is, for both church and state, to make sure that civil authority and ecclesiastic authority are kept separate and distinct.

If you "understand the Constitution says 'creator'," then you understand it incorrectly. The Declaration of Independence does mention a creator (and "nature's god," which is the god of the deists), but the U.S. Constitution (the law of our land) is COMPLETELY secular, with NO mention of God, Jesus, the Bible, or Christianity. What part of that do YOU not understand?
Keye's defense of morality doesn't bother me in the least. It's his narrow, theocratic tendencies that I find alarming.

An intellectual coward perhaps but a young conservative who loves this country and I see this country falling into chaos if Hiliary or Obama are elected. I agree with the fact that McCain may not be the best candidate but I feel that my vote will be better spent...yes voting for the lesser of two evils!

Could someone help me out with this one...You see I'm having difficulty finding the "seperation of church and state" clause in the Constitution! Perhaps one of you brilliant intellectuals coud just respond and tell me what page it is on? Or if that's to tall a task for you please just guide me to the part of that sacred document where the idea is even expressed? I would greatly appreciate it!

Hey, the Democrats of Illinois owe a debt to Alan Keyes they'll never be able to repay. No Senate election against a Republican was ever won more easily. And no candidate has left the state GOP in a worse condition. EVERY state wide office, and both US Senate seats, are now in the hands of Democrats. They owe it all to Keyes-and sincerely hope he'll win the GOP nomination for President and wreak the national GOP in like manner.

This is ridiculous. The constitution also says no man shall be prohibited from holding office because of his religion. is this not a law "respecting" religion? His argument is ridiculous and dangerous. Freedom of religion is also freedom from religion. Why can't people worship privately and respectfully of others.

It says that no religious test shall be applied. It is not a law respecting religion. It is a law restricting discrimination by the government based on a person's religious beliefs.
Also, the phrase "freedom of religion" doesn't appear in the constitution and so trading "of" with "from" is irrelevant to this issue.

You're correct, according to our ORIGINAL Constitution, but not according to our CURRENT Constitution (with the 14th Amendment). Under the Incorporation Doctrine the Bill of Rights are applied to limit state and local governments through the Due Process Clause.
