Joseph Cotton did an adlib on this scene when he fluffed his lines and said "I really am drunk" (not in the script) and Wells chuckled but they kept rolling. Cotton was jet lagged and really tired.
@1999UTD THEN list the films..BUT before you go any further DICKWEED...go check your facts...CITIZEN KANE is the first film to show a ceiling. IT IS in the history books...LISTING THAT FACT!!!! NOW...DOUCHE BAG...please list those films...U say you seen. PROVE ME and the HISTORY BOOKS ALL WRONG...ASSHOLE.
for a start: "The Lodger" (1931 I think..) that had a nice shot of a cieling where you people are looking up at the sound of footsteps on the next floor,
there, in seconds, iv proven YOU wrong.... "douchebag"
i wonder if "you're not very drunk" was orson welles breaking character to direct the actor in the scene, only his response was so well that they went with it and it was a great take.

@wkbfutewc I was thinking something same at first point. I couldn't believe it was supposed to be like that.
I laughed a lot during this slip-up.

because thats stupid. iv seen plenty of 10's - 30's films with cielings in them,
your probably getting confused with "citizen kane is the first film to show camera angles which look upward towards the cieling"
that is probably a arguable point

One of the best scenes in the movie. They dug holes in the studio floor to get the low camera angles.
