@schwarg the story behind this clip as i know it is that this is a test for a breath controller that thordendal recorded as a demo. one of the most insane things i've ever heard... i wish he'd do more of this
@Samsgarden that is actually a fact of life, how do you think the nations we all live in formed? By a mutual agreement? Nope, people had to be needlessly slaughtered, that is how mankind works. Peace is only achieved thru universal submission. To give up all opinion as to not offend anyone. So metal is an expression of personal freedom, a stance against the bland boring life that many are forced to live in. Bjork on the other hand is perfect for people who have already submitted
Well, I wasn't expecting a political dissertation analogous to music!
incidentally, I don't agree with your surmise. Nations need not be formed by needless slaughter, even though all colonialists are guilty of it. Peace and submission - is an oxymoron.
You seem to be saying that metal is iconoclastic whereas I see it as an obligatory accessory to teen angst (to a degree of course)
Should we be discussing this here though? Sorry sheps999
@Samsgarden "Nations need not be formed by needless slaughter" that is how all nations were formed. They were formed before either one of us were born. And yes, peace is not arguing with anyone, not disagreeing with anything said. It's a form of submission to the idea of non-offense. So yea, people who live in a world filled with wars, death, and totalitarian governments who piss away the lives of their citizens are more likely to listen to metal because it helps people cope.
fredrik thordendal seems liking Tool... oh my god... everything is connected... this is now... the time... when the leaders of the music world... will rise...
@tosdemarseille yeah i think Meshuggah is influenced by Tool, and Tool is influenced by Meshuggah...and both bands seem to be influenced by hallucinogens, quantum mechanics, the nature of life and reality, and art.
Also, it seems that many Meshuggah fans appreciate Tools music, and many Tool fans appreciate Meshuggahs music. and many of these fans seem to be interested in hallucinogens, quantum mechanics, the nature of life and reality, and art...just like the band members! interesting eh

I'd love to hear a guy Like Chris Poland (whom I idolize) to make an appearance on a Meshuggah song on an up coming album and trade solos with Fredrik. It would be amazing 2 great jazz/metal guitarists trading solos.
Fredrik is simply awesome. Just like his band, Meshuggah. Such passion and talent. As has been said in this thread, at this level of musicianship, there is no better, just different. I wish he'd go off more in Meshuggah's music, solo-wise, but I am not gonna complain too much (ha, ha). Hails.

movement or procedure with uniform or patterned recurrence of a beat, accent, or the like.
2.
Music .
a.
the pattern of regular or irregular pulses caused in music by the occurrence of strong and weak melodic and harmonic beats.
b.
a particular form of this: duple rhythm; triple rhythm. Above all else, he has twisted phrases even though they are all based on the same 2 chord progression. I would love to see him play with some of these NEW metal bands using his same techniques.
Could somebody point me towards a few Meshuggah songs that show off Thordendal's soloing? I haven't really found any, and the bit in the middle of this songs is really, really beautiful, i wasn't really aware Meshuggah "went there" so to speak, i love the polyrhythmic djenty stuff, but i have to believe if he can write lead lines that are this beautiful they have to be somewhere in their music.
@goatgoesbahhhhhh The songs with the greatest solos are, Future Breed Machine, Soul Burn, Sublevels, Stengah, Closed Eye Visuals and Straws Pulled at Random.
Additionally you might want to check out Ritual, Gods of Rapture, Glints Collide and Pineal Gland Optics.
Hate to be "That guy" but it's actually his "3D breath midi controller" demo. He and his guitar tech built this and this is a demo of it in action. The plans for it are on the meshuggah forums as well as a detailed explanation and link to the song.
Amazing piece of work. Hope it finds its way on the new meshuggah or special defects album(s).
@bertamon Yeah there is a cool interview with Fredrik in this months Guitar magazine, and he talks about the breath controller among other things. Check it out.
Not sure what you call it, but that breath-control device is sik as hell. The way it "splays" out the notes at the end, with the tone becomming sharper. Just awesome.
I really don't think musicians such as Fredrik Thordendal and Tosin Abasi(who I have seen live and is a freak) should even be compared. Musicians at this level aren't really better than their counterparts, they are merely DIFFERENT. A guitarist can only do so much, what makes each of them cool is their respective creativity.
@reeseapoc From what I've heard, he wanted ESP to make him an 8 string but ESP refused because he wanted to take a break from touring. That's also why ESP terminated their contract with him. Bastards.
@reeseapoc My good friend, the simple thought of that has made my mind go numb and my ears longing to hear the epic music of devin if he ever used 8 strings. In short, that was badass and you have my thumbs up. lol
@SevenStringShredHead I think tuning it to E-A-E-A-E-A-C-E (Low to High; Open A minor), would make the most sense in terms of getting such a tuning out of an 8 string. However, I understand your point, and realize that no matter the tuning choice, Devin Townsend would ultimately be a beast at the instrument.
people love to talk about Animals as Leaders but as much as you wanna talk about them and say there amazing Meshuggah is the founder and gods of 8 string metal, and are the best at what they do period.
@godofwar5 Meshuggah are good. Animals As Leaders are great. I hate how they are being compared to each other so often on the basis of them both playing 8 string guitars. I love meshuggah but when it comes to talent, Tosin Abasi of AAL ruins Thordendal. I don't get why people have to constantly compare them when it's pretty obvious.
@summitthescale Meshuggah are gods buddy, the originals. so dont be coming on here saying there "good" and Animals as Leaders are great. Meshuggah runs the 8 String Guitar world.
@summitthescale dude, you're comparing apples and oranges. thordendal has his style, and tosin has his style. to say that one has more talent is a generic thing; thordendal rules at some stuff, and tosin rules at some stuff. no, nothing's obvious at all. it's just YOUR OPINION that tosin is more "talented". don't establish it as a fact
@hailmetal123 I'm only saying something because I can't go to a meshuggah video without seeing someone trash Tosin Abasi. It's like just because he plays an 8 string he is automatically inferior to Thordendal for the fact he used one longer (which may not even be true because Tosin had one custom made a few years ago before Ibanez sold them). I love both bands and I have plenty of Meshuggah albums and I've seen them live, but I'm tired of Tosin being seen as such an inferior guitar player.
@summitthescale i understand what you're saying; even i hate it when people disrespect musicians, and tosin fucking rules. but what other people say shouldn't matter to you. you like tosin, listen to him. screw other people, why do you care so much about what they think?
I want to point out that Thordendal's idol is ALLAN HOLDSWORTH, folks. This must be stated as Holdsworth, the legend, is not quite popular, but many players use his tone and imitate his style. A bit weak to just copy Holdsworth, but on the other hand, it is great Holdsworth sets a standard.
@Listendudeok My favourite guitarist. Fredrick is also an amazing player, and he deserves far more respect than you give in your shitty, baseless comment.
@rexasul Alright. Like I said, I just wanted to mention the name Allan Holdsworth in this context. I think it's not exactly right to imitate Holdsworth, and I think Thordendal does. But on the other hand, it may be some sort of tribute to the big man.
@Listendudeok I can understand how you can think he's imitating Holdsworth, but he adds so much of his own flavour that I don't think it's fair to just discard him for it. And to be honest... anyone that can even so much as imitate Holdsworth should be worthy of any guitar player's respect, not to even mention the fact that he's taking it somewhere else and doing his own thing with it...
@rexasul Yeah, it's not that a serious matter anyway. I just tried to explain to folks where this sound comes from... I don't think everyone knows. Anyway, peace out, enjoy... I respect Thordendal a lot anyway.
@rexasul My dad was the sound tech for Allan about 20 years ago for a few tours, I can;t get into Allan at all.. my dad was pretty gutted that I couldn't see the musical genius in front of my eyes.. but meh, I think the guy is insanely talented etc, I just can;t stand listening to it.
@rexasul Sorry dude,I clicked "thumbs down" button instead of "thumbs up".I wholeheartedly agree with you,Holdsworth is a beast and Thordendal is awesome too,I think of those two as a some kind of father and son,as far as Holdsworth's influence on Thordendal is concerned.Hope that makes some sense to you :D:D:D!!!
If you guys like that, check out Animals As Leaders (the band in which Tosin Abasi plays). :)
I prefer AAL (just my opinion, right) but both Tosin and Frederik play in strange rythms, and that's what I like (even though I find AAL more melodic).
@DrumBum561 Unfortunately, this song was never part of an album; it was a demo released to demonstrate a breath controller. I got my copy from a Meshuggah torrent, but I'm pretty sure Fredrik also released this song on the Meshuggah forums.
@HWCWTD Just google a Youtube downloader, and convert the file to MP3/audio format.
Personally i use Realplayer and all i have to do is right click on a video to download - then it has a simple and fast file conversion thingy in it. pretty much get any video on youtube or on the internet in a usuable form, or audio form in less than 2 minutes.

It's like just because he plays an 8 string he is automatically inferior to Thordendal for the fact he used one longer (which may not even be true because Tosin had one custom made a few years ago before Ibanez sold them). I love both bands and I have plenty of Meshuggah albums and I've seen them live, but I'm tired of Tosin being seen as such an inferior guitar player.
summitthescale 1 year ago
@summitthescale i understand what you're saying; even i hate it when people disrespect musicians, and tosin fucking rules. but what other people say shouldn't matter to you. you like tosin, listen to him. screw other people, why do you care so much about what they think?
hailmetal123 1 year ago
I want to point out that Thordendal's idol is ALLAN HOLDSWORTH, folks. This must be stated as Holdsworth, the legend, is not quite popular, but many players use his tone and imitate his style. A bit weak to just copy Holdsworth, but on the other hand, it is great Holdsworth sets a standard.

@Listendudeok
No need to compare Holdsworth with this sack of crap.

@Jebemvamkevu You fucking suck.
rexasul 1 year ago
@rexasul Dude, do you have the slightest idead who Allan Holdsworth is at all?
Listendudeok 1 year ago
@Listendudeok My favourite guitarist. Fredrick is also an amazing player, and he deserves far more respect than you give in your shitty, baseless comment.
rexasul 1 year ago
@Listendudeok Rather Jebemvamkevu's shitty, baseless comment. :P
rexasul 1 year ago
@rexasul Alright. Like I said, I just wanted to mention the name Allan Holdsworth in this context. I think it's not exactly right to imitate Holdsworth, and I think Thordendal does. But on the other hand, it may be some sort of tribute to the big man.
Listendudeok 1 year ago
@Listendudeok I can understand how you can think he's imitating Holdsworth, but he adds so much of his own flavour that I don't think it's fair to just discard him for it. And to be honest... anyone that can even so much as imitate Holdsworth should be worthy of any guitar player's respect, not to even mention the fact that he's taking it somewhere else and doing his own thing with it...
rexasul 1 year ago
@rexasul Yeah, it's not that a serious matter anyway. I just tried to explain to folks where this sound comes from... I don't think everyone knows. Anyway, peace out, enjoy... I respect Thordendal a lot anyway.
Listendudeok 1 year ago

@Jebemvamkevu I totally understand what you are saying. You are right in fact.

@Jebemvamkevu Holdsworth is my favourite guitarist but Thordendal is amazing too. I love Meshuggah.

If you guys like that, check out Animals As Leaders (the band in which Tosin Abasi plays). :)
I prefer AAL (just my opinion, right) but both Tosin and Frederik play in strange rythms, and that's what I like (even though I find AAL more melodic).

Someone owes Allan Holdsworth a shitload of money. Which is why this guy rules..

Where can I buy this song/ album
DrumBum561 1 year ago
@DrumBum561 Unfortunately, this song was never part of an album; it was a demo released to demonstrate a breath controller. I got my copy from a Meshuggah torrent, but I'm pretty sure Fredrik also released this song on the Meshuggah forums.
sheps999 1 year ago
@sheps999 Do you know if torrents exist for a demo album? Or even one for a cobbled together "album" of his solo work? That would be savage!!!

@HWCWTD Sadly, I don't think one exists.
sheps999 1 year ago
@HWCWTD Just google a Youtube downloader, and convert the file to MP3/audio format.
Personally i use Realplayer and all i have to do is right click on a video to download - then it has a simple and fast file conversion thingy in it. pretty much get any video on youtube or on the internet in a usuable form, or audio form in less than 2 minutes.
