As has already been said, when James heard that Richard had been involved in an accident, he rushed to his bedside, so it's not as though he doesn't care about him. I bet they hugged offscreen. You do know that they are acting onscreen? Richard isn't the moron he portrays onscreen, they have onscreen characters.

He was driving a vampire dragster car at 288mph at the RAF Elvington airbase near York, he was the only guy in the car, and he escaped, unfortunately with brain damage, but with a slight permanent bloodshot left eye, a chipped tooth and a small graze on his knee.
