I love baseball..some of my greatest memories of my life are going with my father to Forbes Field when we lived in Pittsburgh to watch Clemente; the move to St. Louis to witness the Bob Gibson era Cardinal clubs. There have been many great players in baseball history and Barry has to be considered one of the best. At the professional level, fly outs are a cause of making contact slightly late. This is where steroids come into play; they give you that extra energy that gets transferred all the way to the contact point of the bat, causing that slightly-late hit ball to go over the fence. Had Ted Williams taken steroids, I'm sure he would have hit 800+ homers. Hitting home runs is first and foremost timed mechanics; but strength and bat speed will cut you some (or a lot of) slack.

Every time I bring this up, I mention the fact that if you are able to plow through plateaus and to get much stronger with steroids than if you would've by drug free weight training, then in the case of someone like Bonds--here's what you get....line drives deep in the gap are now soaring over the fence...deep fly balls that die at the warning track are now hr's with roids...and home runs at 410 ft. are now "tape measure" shots that are well past 450ft. As a shortstop, 2nd baseman, or any infielder for that matter if it really matters if someone has great reflexes and has the quickness AND LEAPING/JUMPING ability to rob a hitter of a base hit by making a play on it and making a put out...yes you need to have a good glove...a decent arm...and many other skills and talents to be a complete player. Yes, some average fielders could make the HOF if they have great hitting skills, but don't forget Ozzie Smith.

If you can perform these skills BETTER than your teammate who is trying to take you're starting position, then yes, you are having to out run, out jump, and overall, outperform your own teammates as well as your own opponents at times.

Barry Bonds has the record but that does not mean he was the greatest. The number of At Bats has to be considered. Mark Mcwire had 1 homer per 10.6 at bats. Babe Ruth had 1 homer per 11.2 at bats and Bonds had 1 homer per 11.7 AB.

Steroids improves hand-eye coordination just so you know, so it would be easier for him to hit a ball with steroids. Babe Ruth played on larger fields and hit homeruns on hotdogs and beer. You can say Bonds is better all you want, but Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron didn't even have steroids when they played. Also, why did his head grow to the size of a basketball after the age of 30? Same can be said about Bonds, regardless of what you think of him. He dominated from day1. Look at all those walk Barry has gotten over his career. Its rediculous. Take some of those walks into ball on bat, and his number would have been even more astronomical. But that was Barry's genius, his ability to be patient and take what the pitcher gave him regardless of the situation.

My numbers say otherwise. I was trying to be "nice," but the "segregrated argument" is about the worst argument you could make. If Ruth was just a hitter, he'd have over 900 HR's. His average is almost 50 POINTS ahead, and Bonds NEVER hit more HR than an entire team, let alone an entire league. Look at ANY expert poll, Ruth is the greatest ever. Only Bonds fans says he is the best, baseball fans rarely put him in the top 5. And let's not forget about steroids, supplaments, air travel, money, etc

I love baseball..some of my greatest memories of my life are going with my father to Forbes Field when we lived in Pittsburgh to watch Clemente; the move to St. Louis to witness the Bob Gibson era Cardinal clubs. There have been many great players in baseball history and Barry has to be considered one of the best. It is unfortunate that Barry Bonds has been made the scapegoat for every professional athlete that ever used steroids.

At the professional level, fly outs are a cause of making contact slightly late. This is where steroids come into play; they give you that extra energy that gets transferred all the way to the contact point of the bat, causing that slightly-late hit ball to go over the fence. Had Ted Williams taken steroids, I'm sure he would have hit 800+ homers. Hitting home runs is first and foremost timed mechanics; but strength and bat speed will cut you some (or a lot of) slack.

The Point that is being made is that steroids may make a person get stronger FASTER and that may help in speed and leaping ability. Bonds was always fast. and no one is talking about Bonds' leaping ability and speed. They talk about his hitting and steroids does not make anyone a better hitter because it is a skill. steroids does not make you better defensively. Steroids in baseball is a non issue.

Every time I bring this up, I mention the fact that if you are able to plow through plateaus and to get much stronger with steroids than if you would've by drug free weight training, then in the case of someone like Bonds--here's what you get....line drives deep in the gap are now soaring over the fence...deep fly balls that die at the warning track are now hr's with roids...and home runs at 410 ft. are now "tape measure" shots that are well past 450ft. That's the point.

As a shortstop, 2nd baseman, or any infielder for that matter if it really matters if someone has great reflexes and has the quickness AND LEAPING/JUMPING ability to rob a hitter of a base hit by making a play on it and making a put out...yes you need to have a good glove...a decent arm...and many other skills and talents to be a complete player. Yes, some average fielders could make the HOF if they have great hitting skills, but don't forget Ozzie Smith.

By mentioning that having good speed and superior jumping skills in baseball were great athletic skills, I never denied that having a good glove was somehow an ignored skill in the process...if you look back, the point of this was to say that it's more than you saying just hit a ball in baseball and that's a skill...you were ignoring other skills and talents, and I pointed SOME of them out...that's all.

If you can perform these skills BETTER than your teammate who is trying to take you're starting position, then yes, you are having to out run, out jump, and overall, outperform your own teammates as well as your own opponents at times.

I have seen players who were a liability in the field. IE Manny Ramirez. The other outfielders available are faster and have a better glove. Do you know why he plays? BECAUSE HE CAN HIT YOU DOLT. Like I said before, just hitting a baseball well gets you into the HOF.

Can someone explain to who ever posted this that Barry Bonds not the greatest. That Hank Aaron is way better because of his great "clean" accomplishments and he did it at a time with many racial issues. So, Barry isnt the greatest, but he is the greatest juicer.

Bonds did steriods but so did Arod, Sosa, McGwire, Palmeiro, Juan Gonzalez, Canseco, Greg Vaughn, Jason Giambi, Brady Anderson, Griffey and everyone else who posted huge numbers during the steriod era. I really like Arod but I am so tired of people pretending that he is completely clean. The same time that Bonds hit 73 and Sosa hit 64, Arod was hitting 52 and 57. Everyone was on steroids from 1995-2004 but Bonds was still the best player of the era!!!

i have played baseball and i watched it for a very long time..enough to realize that barry averaged 32 per season before he took steroids.and then he grew an inch when he was 32 years old and gained 16lbs. during the 97season and gained 18lbs. before his 01 season... what do you call that, huh?it's not like he gained fat, its muscle mass!besides, how does your head grow when you're in your 30's?from a size 7 to 7 1/2 to 8? you should wake up!!!

Barry sucks, what a cheater. he's a disgrace to baseball. Shouldn't have the record..he only has 653 hr's without the roids. Everytime he hits a homerun, think about how he took steroids, human growth hormones, insulin, testosterone decanoate, bovine steroids, and female fertility drugs to get where he is. then watch him step on home plate and point to God to praise and thank Him for modern day chemistry. baseball is the only athletic sport where one may not run fast, have little strength, have little vertical leaping ability and make it in the HOF.
You do not have to jump higher, run faster or be stronger than the man you are facing in order to be better than your opponent. Just hit a baseball and that is a SKILL.

Bonds is hitting Homeruns at such a rapid pace lately it's hard to keep track....He broke Aron's record less than a week ago and he is already on #758 after last night's bomb....the Guy is absolutely amazing and he is 43!!!! No one has ever hit 20 hr's in a season at his age and he is on pace to hit 35!!!!! And don't tell me crap about steroids because he isn't on anything right now and look at what he's doing......
