  • In drama we are reading the play Woyzeck and this story is in it!

I nearly jumped out my seat when I realized!

  • the chuckle at the end is a huge part of the magic of this piece. I'm so glad I don't think like you. he's laughing at the idea of giving a very young child a taste of harsh reality as opposed to a fairytale. and that's a funny idea you humourless get.

  • when i first heard this with my friend today, we laughed, but this video made it a lot more than black humor for me, and so much more poignant, thanks, great video man.

  • really sad. guys check our channel F3KIDSWORLD for some informative and educational videos and subscribe the channel for more updates

  • I think this is more inspired by The Giving Tree.

  • This is sad

  • He talks and aks like da joker good story by da way

  • Beautiful. That's exactly how I saw it with my inner eye.

  • What is this? A no hope story? It sucks ass.

  • @TheycallmeYazhegirl

It's a childrens story told in the play "Woyzeck* by Georg Büchner...

  • I need to agree, Tom included the chuckle and so should you. Still, beautiful illustrations. But that chuckle is the punch line of the whole thing.

  • CLASSIC STORY CLASSIC ARTIST!! He better win entry into the rock n roll hall of fame this year or there is no god!!

  • "Christmas Story"

  • "Children's Story"

  • WHERE IS THE CHUCKLE, FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK. That's the best part of the story! The conclusion!

  • that is so fucking awesome it makes me want to kill myself!!

  • herp derp

  • what was it about it was dummmmmmmm

  • It is such a depressing story... but ironically I cracked up from beginning to end.

  • is this supposed to make me feel better...?

  • Hahahaha, I loved that story!!

  • Thats one heck of a depressing story dude, Great video XD

  • This is beautiful....

  • GAY

  • i proper laugh when he says piss pot... this poem kinda makes sense though... good video im gonna buy the brawlers album for christmas

  • God...I could listen to Tom Waits read the dictionary and it would be beautiful.

  • That's basically what the track Army Ants is him reading an encyclopedia

  • @GraveyardGlamMakeup Here here.

  • I keep waiting for someone to illustrate Fawn. I expect a sequel about the same time that Brian finishes his book....

  • Wow, love the artwork and the way you read the story gave it so much meaning!

My Nan was an orphan and used to read to take her mind off how sad she was.

It is this sort of story that brings you down to earth and makes you realise how lucky we really are. Well done!

  • almost makes you happy your so sad

  • hey who wrote this when he wanted to go back down to earth the earth was a over turned piss pot ,makes you want to shot you self in the head with a gun or better yet hit youself in the head with a piss pot

  • he wrote it: Tom Waits.

  • No, Tom Waits did not write this, George Buchner wrote it.

  • nice

  • well that was uplifting

  • oh my

  • brilliant video and artwork! BRAVO! Tom Waits would be very touched!

  • Welp, guess that's it for me then.

  • Ahh, such a perfect song from such a perfect musician.

Nicely drawn, the pictures were wonderful.

  • Jesus im gonna get me gun thanks for cheering me up...

  • Hahahahaha Jesus Christ.

  • ITS A TERRIBLE THING TO FEAR TOM WAITS.

  • Cheer the fack up, emo kid. Or I'll give you something to REALLY mope about.

  • u seem so scary!

  • Ahhh no chuckle... still great though.

  • I thoughtit was a load of sh*te....but there ya go, good job we're not all the same

  • lol

  • I don't hear the chuckle as "heh heh, just kidding" at all. To the contrary, I hear it as "Pester me for a bedtime story, will ya?...Now try to have a good night's sleep after that, ya little shit!". To me that's much more powerful and dark and sinister (and 'Waits-ian') than "THERE'S your fucking story. Full stop." Again, I wish the other animations on Youtube that did leave in the punchline (Yes, PUNCHLINE!) were as good as yours! ;-)

  • i understand and respect your point.

Having said that, I disagree, and were I to do the whole thing over I'd still leave out the chuckle.

Thank you, however, for taking the time and effort to explain your position to me.

  • I never heard the punchline, but I didn't miss it for one moment: the story and Toms voice spoke for themselves. (his voice breaths the punchline all the way through the story imho.. :-) )

  • Nothing 3rd rate about the video...it's beautiful...It's just that, the chuckle doesn't distract...The chuckle is the punchline without which there is no joke.

    Beautiful interpretation...lousy editing...

  • Sorry, to me the chuckle distracts, and since I was doing a little creating I exercised some creative license and left it out.

    On purpose.

I don't think of the laugh as a punchline at all. I think it diminishes the punch of darkness the story contains, *as I see it*.

It's like, "Heh heh, just kidding."

Without it it's like, "THERE'S your fucking story. Full stop."

There's nothing nice or soft about this tale and the warmth of a human laugh at the end distracts from that, to ME.

  • I completley agree.

    Also, wonderful video.

  • @katmaidog this story is just great not being a joke. you cant argue his opinion.

  • @Herebebears You make no valid point whatsoever. The rest of the world gets the joke without the "punchline chuckle." It appears that Americans need to have it spelled out for them I guess.

  • Heh,heh…You know what? You're absolutely right. Tom's performances are always so longwinded and weighed down with unnecessarily fluff. This 'byzantine' reading is more guilty of that than usual…I'm sure there was no reason at all for Mr.Waits to have left that chuckle in there…It was an accident…a mistake! Thank goodness we have you, and "the rest of the world", to set us straight! It's SOOOOO much better without that distracting 'noise' at the end…. Pffft. :-)

  • @Herebebears I always considered "There's your story. Night Night" as an effective ending. The chuckle was just an extra.

  • Beautiful...just a shame you cut short his chuckle at the end...it is what makes the whole piece so memorable...

  • I thought the chuckle distracted from the intent of the piece, so I cut it.

I know...3rd-rate video producer interprets Tom Waits.

    yep.

  • aww how sad. hahaha.

this is really great man, I was excpecting some guy just getting a bunch of pictures from google, putting them in order and calling it a video. but this is a really good piece of art. thank you.

  • Hi guy. Great work. I'm a Tom waits fan, and I thank you so much for this vid. Can I put it on my blog ? I love it.

  • Beautiful. Thank you. I am very depressed today and this made me feel better for some strange reason. Please know that your art made a difference in a stranger's life today. I think that's wonderful.

  • Thanks, Rrenfro. Yeah, funny how sometimes Tom's bleakest stuff can be a mood elevator. Like "Yeah, it's a sad and brutal world....full of beauty."

  • What a beautiful piece of art, katmaidog. I'm usually disappointed with how folks represent Tom, though I know they're all well-intentioned. Your work matches, though, captures his tone as well as the content. Love it! Do more!

  • I've really liked it and have added it to my Tom Waits website if that's ok with you.

  • yes, thanks.

  • Still the best chidlren's story..as of april 08

  • This is one of my favorite Tom Waits tracks. I just wrote an adaptation of "Woyzeck" for the theatre I run, and that monologue is so heartbreaking. I love the animation.

  • Thank you for that. It was beautiful, and quite depressing.

  • What a sweet story to tell to children at bedtime!!!

  • When I saw that someone had done a video for this song I was SO excited and you did it the perfect justice. Every frame was perfectly thought out and fit exactly what I imagined they would look like. Kudos all around. You done an old Rain Dog proud. More, I say, more!

  • MOST DISTURBING KIDS STORY EVER!

  • What kind of story is that?!

  • A Children's Story.

  • thanks a lot! really enjoyed this!

  • Matt, I knew you were talented, but this was truly inspired.

  • Awesome work Matt.

  • Very impressive. I'm with everybody else who's saying you should pitch it to Anti/Tom.

  • Wow, Matt! How perfect. The simple drawings fit so well into TW's silly story. Like Sarah V suggested, run with it.

  • That was ten kinds of awesome.

  • Love it! :-) You should send a link to someone at anti, really...

  • wow!!! Perfection :) brilliant job.

I just love the end when Tom says "alright, there's your story..night, night"

  • Ha. You know, I never thought of you + Tom Waits before, but actually, it's a lovely fit. This is great. I hope he sees it. :)

  • i love this! adding it to my favorites!

  • Thanks.

  • Very nice, Matt. The visual and the audio seem totally seamless.

  • Nice one Matt !!
