I was on the edge of my seat, wondering if somewhere in the song she would become completely unhinged! Here, Lena put together the sophistication and elegance of the look, the stellar technical control of her voice, combined with almost wild ferocity that threatened to unravel the whole package. Few entertainers dance on the brink the way Lena did in this performance. I imagine many in the audience didn't know what to make of it. She didn't exactly project ideal womanhood circa 1960 here.
All the wanna-be divas of today ought to watch this over and over again...they might learn how to really deliver a song....how to really vocalize without inane roller coaster trills. And what a sad commentary it is on today's society when the music of the great Cole Porter is not recognizable.
Lena kicks this thing to the moon and back. It was great to see her really cutting loose after all of those postured (although pretty) performances that MGM required her to do. I could watch and listen to her sing all day. One of the greatest entertainers of all time; Lena, you will be forever missed-thank heaven for film, recordings, and our memories of extraordinarily blessed with both talent and beauty. There will never be another like you-talk about a lady and her music!
This is from a 1963 Perry Como Kraft Music Hall show; Lena had lost a lot of weight, maybe too much weight in 1963. I'll upload more from the Perry Como shows soon.
Lena's one of the most confident performers ever. Is this a gutsy performance or what?
