As a newly immigrant black boy from the UK, Taxi Driver was the FIRST film I saw in America (Times Square no less.) I didn't know how the film would affect me all the way to this point in my life. Even as a child I related to Travis' internal journey through hell. Who hasn't felt put upon and misunderstood by the world. And in my case it was even more so. Despite the "latent racism" of Travis (which only magnifies his misanthropy) Taxi Driver will speak to all types until the sun goes out.

Saying that this film only appeals to white america is like saying that american history only appeals to white america. This is an incredible portrait of NYC, a portrait that I personally saw. People should WAKE UP and see the realism of this film, not just what YOU want to see.

Just like with Raging Bull, Scorsese was robbed here too at the Oscars, both with Best Film and Director. I don't even think either category was nominated. The oldtimers at the Academy probably objected to the gritty language for one thing. Hmmm. Now I come to think of it, the Oscar winner is very, very seldom the best movie of the year.

the commentator who described Travis Bickle as "dispicable" I have to disagree with. Maybe to some extent sure, but I see Bickle as more of just a flawed and fallible human being pushed to the margins by a set of circumstance, perhaps made dispicable in a way by the contemptable bullshit he sees all around him.

I don't find her arrogant at all. She's got a certain style of speaking that sounds rather refined, which could come off arrogant to some. But there's nothing about her words or ideas that is arrogant, to me.

If you watch the whole thing you will see where Cybil tries to compare her acting and preparation style to De Niro's trying to make herself seem so great and then immediately following that statement, Jodie Foster goes "well I wish I could tell you I was well researched as Robert De Niro was.." shows just the difference between the two ladies attitudes. And the funny thing is Jodie Foster is 10 times more talented than Cybil yet she's so much more humble.
