Man except maybe Daniel Day Lewis, there is No actor that works as hard at his craft as Robert Deniro. I don't care what they say, it has to bug them that Marlon Brando could just do it.
Shepherd wrote in her autobiography that while working on Taxi Driver, she turned down Deniro for a date , and he never spoke to her, except in character, for the rest of the filming.
As a newly immigrant black boy from the UK, Taxi Driver was the FIRST film I saw in America (Times Square no less.) I didn't know how the film would affect me all the way to this point in my life. Even as a child I related to Travis' internal journey through hell. Who hasn't felt put upon and misunderstood by the world. And in my case it was even more so. Despite the "latent racism" of Travis (which only magnifies his misanthropy) Taxi Driver will speak to all types until the sun goes out.

Saying that this film only appeals to white america is like saying that american history only appeals to white america. This is an incredible portrait of NYC, a portrait that I personally saw. People should WAKE UP and see the realism of this film, not just what YOU want to see.
Just like with Raging Bull, Scorsese was robbed here too at the Oscars, both with Best Film and Director. I don't even think either category was nominated. The oldtimers at the Academy probably objected to the gritty language for one thing. Hmmm. Now I come to think of it, the Oscar winner is very, very seldom the best movie of the year.
@solidsnakeBYTE88 I agree with u. And isn't saying that 'it only appeals to white ppl' kinda racist, since it isn't true. That dude must think white ppl are different from other ppl.
All ppl are the same in certain aspects. One of these universal aspects is loneliness, which is what the movie is about.
the commentator who described Travis Bickle as "dispicable" I have to disagree with. Maybe to some extent sure, but I see Bickle as more of just a flawed and fallible human being pushed to the margins by a set of circumstance, perhaps made dispicable in a way by the contemptable bullshit he sees all around him.
@Therealtaxidriver so are you saying this movie is based on events that happened to you, or that Bickle is a character based on you and you didn't get credit for it? are you serious?
@Therealtaxidriver if you say it was a national news story, then would you mind telling me what newspaper(s) it was in? It sounds interesting; I'm actually quite curious.
@matteoprez Listen friend, you aren't talk'in to a screenwriter or any other kind of a writer here. I did the best I could to respond to an inquiry, and that's all there is to it.
It's been taken down from this film school student propaganda page so you might want to remove your question as well. It doesn't make sense without the post I removed. I'll seek other avenues to get the word out in the future. Thanks for the heads up!
lol, "too socially irresponsible". Why didn't you make a fucking feelgood movie then? Or twist the whole fucking plot; Brickle feels sorry for all the murders, he falls in love with the girl, they get married and live happily ever after.Or maybe Sport could start to feel bad about his exploitation of the girl(s), and then he gets forgiven.Fucking confimists, why change something that is very likely, just so that you don't offend anyone? He should've been black/white/mexican/jew, no offence there!
THE MASTERPICE OF ALL MASTERPICES ! JESUS CRIST THIS FILM IS AN AMERICAN CLASSIC...! THE BEST SCORSESE MOUVIE! AND THE MOST REALISTIC ONE THIS MOUVIE IS NOT ROMANTISIZED LIKE CASINO, OR GODFEKLEAS, OR GANGS.! THIS IS REALITY
There's always a powerful element of mysogyny in ever lone gunman. Just look at how many of them end up whacking the woman they once swore on the bible they'd love and cherish forever. Sadly they often kill the kids she bore him as well, as if everything that came out of her body is now tainted.
Just today in California one dressed up as Santa Claus and gave his ex wife and her family a "special present".
I don't find her arrogant at all. She's got a certain style of speaking that sounds rather refined, which could come off arrogant to some. But there's nothing about her words or ideas that is arrogant, to me.
she is arrogant. If you watch the whole thing you will see where Cybil tries to compare her acting and preparation style to De Niro's trying to make herself seem so great and then immediately following that statement, Jodie Foster goes "well I wish I could tell you I was well researched as Robert De Niro was.." shows just the difference between the two ladies attitudes. And the funny thing is Jodie Foster is 10 times more talented than Cybil yet she's so much more humble.
Paul Schrader would be a racist person or not?.Because when I saw the movie I never saw the De Niro's character as a racist guy but he said they had t maybe I should watch the movie again.Taxi Driver is in my opinion one of the great film ever made.

Anyone who lives in NY, maybe you can relate. It's such a populated city, yet sometimes you can feel so lonely. It's very hard, believe me.
I have always felt pity for the character of Travis Bickle.
