I support the effort here, but really you shouldn't be trying to change the ways of others as such, you should be changing yourselves. It's demand for the product that causes what you see. This will always exist until people change their ways. This is unlikely to happen to any serious degree. People have become hopelessly dependent on this system for survival. This system has no future, it is destined to fail. The terrible trends you see now are set to become much greater in the future.

Anh who cares if it'd have an impact. Society would innovate. The technology exists to fully replace the oil driven industry, it's just that there's not (yet) an urgent enough demand to get Joe Blow's dollar vote, as it's far easier for him to just keep driving his gas car and keep buying petroleum based products. If oil supply bottle-necked, investment in alternatives would skyrocket, peak/level, and oil would be replaced. Sure there'd be a temporary negative impact, so what?

Stopping the Oil Sands (however environmentally hazardous) is a terrible idea, on top of keeping the gas prices down across the world there is a huge behind the scenes effort by Canadian Oil Sands where they actually restore the eco system to it's original state (Sure this may take several years, but the reliance on oil is what makes oil sands essential) Protesting this is just stupid at this point, until the world can move away from it's reliance on Oil, the Oil Sands aren't going anywhere.

The main reason why the government of every nation doesn't just stop all oil production and start on mass wind turbines is because of the fragile "economy" every country seems to think is essential. this mass reliance of stocks and theoretical money is what is holding us back.
