Also, the lyrics are quite joyful and liberating, yet the music has an undercurrent of sorrow. I wonder if that's because although the Gilbert Price character is now free - he remembers all the time when he was confined.
Thank you so much for uploading this video. I'm a huge fan of Anthony Newley and his music and this song always brings me to tears. I think Newley's twangy voice is an acquired taste, but his interpretation of the lyrics are the best! Most of the modern singers -sing "birds" flying high in the first line - but actually it was written "bird"flying high - which is the way Anthony Newley sings it. I think the singular is more meaningful.
I love this version i know the Nina Simone version is probably the most famous but the fact Anthony Newley co wrote it and the way its arranged is so much more better IMO.
thanks for this post. I saw this musical before it crashed and burned and loved it and don't know why it wasn't a huge success. Newly didn't sing this in the play, though. Maybe Gilbert Price... So long ago...
Not everyone sucks..my favorite is Lanie Kazan and I feel privileged to have that vinyl from the early 70s and Streisand[ big surprise] kicks butt with her live versions which can be seen at Youtube.
Thanks for posting this, I've never heard Newley sing this one. Cool that it has had such a long life, it may be Newley's biggest hit -- certainly it's the only one known by younger people.
@meridian2002 Although "What Kind of Fool Am I?" may be Newley's most recorded composition, "Feeling Good" has had a new life of its own these past few years.
@baileymarkham I'm sure you are right, but for "Feelin' Good" to have this renaissance 40+ years after it was written is kind of amazing, no?
I used to sing "What Kind of Fool Am I?" in the shower as a kid (yes back when it first came out!) and other Newley-Bricusse tunes from "Roar Of The Greasepaint" and "Stop The World" especially "Who Can I Turn To," and "On A Wonderful Day Like Today".
Tony Newley would have turned 80 this year had he lived. Wish I'd seen him on stage.
@meridian2002 I am a massive Newley fan so I am biased, but for me he is the only one who sings this song the way it should be sung. It is wonderful you have discovered his version, BTW Tony co wrote and sang Goldfinger too, that is worth a listen as well!! xx
thanks for posting this... I'm working on this song for one of my Closet Singer episodes, and I'm using this recording to work on the relative pitches outside of my vocal coachings.
Thanks for posting Newley's version. Kooks at the Michael Buble version video keep saying Nine Simone did the original. Newley deserves the credit, having wrote the lyrics, directed "Roar" and performed it onstage on Broadway. Thanks again.
@TenderTrap86 You're welcome TenderTrap86 and whocaniturnto. Two things, TenderTrap86: Newley wrote the music, Bricusse wrote the lyrics. Also, Newley did not sing the song in "Roar"; the song was sung by the character played by Gilbert Price. But you are correct, Newley did direct the show for which he received a Tony nomination.
@TenderTrap86 Absolutely, "Dolittle" is a gorgeous score, with some of the best songs being cut out of the movie. There's a fascinating book by Mark Harris called "Pictures at a Revolution" which talks about the making of the movie.
@baileymarkham I loved how Bricusse used a similiar format as the one Rex Harrison used in My Fair Lady again. The alliteration in Like Animals was tremendous, and even jaw dropping. What a lyricist Bricusse was!
@TenderTrap86 According to the book I mentioned in another post, Harrison hated all the songs!
Mr. Bricusse is still writing. His new musical about Sammy Davis Jr. was produced at the Old Globe in San Diego last year. I'd love to see it come to Broadway.
@baileymarkham Harrison hated those songs? He seemed as if he rather enjoyed them. Then again I have heard the he was a bit of a snob. He did very well, whether he enjoyed himself or not. Go figure.
Bricusse ought to do one about Sammy. He must of really appreciated how Sammy put over some of his songs.
Also, the lyrics are quite joyful and liberating, yet the music has an undercurrent of sorrow. I wonder if that's because although the Gilbert Price character is now free - he remembers all the time when he was confined.

@Bellalinski You are correct, Gilbert Price originated the role; Newley's character doesn't sing this song.

How I love to hear Anthony Newley sing the wonderful songs he had written.
No one does a better job on "What Kind of Fool Am I?" and "Who Can I Turn To?" better than he did.

Anthony's voice has always fascinated me... he tends to go a bit cockney sometimes when he sings, but he never talks like that.
This is, by far, the definitive version of this song!!

why do people try to sing this song... everyone sucks at this song....

@bofumytofu Im sorry but your wrong. Michael Buble probably has the best rendition of this song so you should check it out and give it a listen.
