  • Spent 8 years of my childhood in Winnipeg. I love Maddin's work! Does anyone know where I can send him fan mail? I would love to get this autograph!

  • Hi Guy! Great work! I'm an actor/writer in Toronto although I have been living in California many yrs. I wrote a screenplay that I think you might be IDEAL for as director. You can find my demo on youtube under Louis Wrightman & you can contact me thru there! Thanx! Louis

  • I lived in Winnipeg from September 1999 to January 18, 2008. I have lived and worked elsewhere in Canada, and can attest that this city is trapped in the dreamy past of Winter. I hope that anyone who has any real talent will get of of there and never return, leaving the city to slip further into the abyss of mediocrity and a longing for the past.

  • you can't escape this city. ain't that the truth.

  • @anononomos You can escape it. Save your money, go to school elsewhere, find a proper job and don't even think about returning.

  • This move is horrible.. horrible

  • @Patricktytgat So's your mum.

  • HELLO, I am kenny at fei, how do I get this song? please help me!!

    maybe anyone knows it....

  • @delirio123 ER-127 SWINGING STRINGS (vocal by Jim Wheeler) - Welcome To Winnipeg / Wonderful Winnipeg (June 22, 1967)

("Wonderful Winnipeg" is the song featured in Guy Maddin's "My Winnipeg" movie)

  • I feel sad for the people that don't understand maddin's genius

  • i loved brand upon the brain. love the fucked up situations that he puts us in.

  • What a great fucking trailer.

  • Winnipeg sucks!! Coldest shit hole city on earth

  • what's the song called?

  • Winnepeg is not black and white! God I love the Forks amusement park.

  • @thegenie144 hahahahaha

  • @tricyclesinskirts What's so funny?

  • Brian Olynik for city council! Search him on youtube! BrianOlynik. ca

  • Guy Maddin is a genius...

  • I find it scary.

  • missing words, amazing work

  • This film is an absolute masterpiece. One of the finest I've ever seen.

  • most f***ed movie i have ever seen

  • Awesome trailer, awesome film!

  • you don't matter at all

  • Guy Maddin is a genius!

  • when i was a lil boy growing up i seen fights murders creepers crawling in the night so much memories i was calling Winnipeg windowpeg lol cause i seen so much windows lol!

  • ••••Watch-north end, Trailer............by clicking here now.

    Depressing.

  • Could it be that this is where inspiration for "Lemony Snicket's Unauthorized Autobiography" came from? It has that same style (photos, etc), atmosphere, and "depressing" narrative the books have. I love it :)

  • It is a simialar style. But that actually predates this movie.

  • beauty

  • This is the best film i've seen in years... the dance of the hairless boners had me on the floor.

  • this movie was awesome I wonder how long it took him it was the bomb

  • I can't wait to see it! :D

  • my great uncle cut his hair... and his actors hair

  • It's finally gettting into the plus degrees here in Winnipeg! =D

  • Isolation....right.

    Cold.....check.

    You forgot the mosquitoes.

What other big city has 6 months of snow & cold & about 4 months of mosquitoes? You get about 2 months out of the year where you can actually go outside & enjoy the weather. Unique? Yeah. A film about it would almost write itself, no? I dunno, because I haven't seen it. I do think we are a hardy bunch, putting up with the weather here. And, any province that produced Neil Young & Margaret Laurence couldn't be all that bad, could it?

  • Yes, I agree that the mosquitos would be the third part of the trinity although perhaps a little less unique and interesting to an outsider.

  • not to mention "winni" the pooh which was a black bear brought to england in the first world war as a mascot for the regiment and ended up in a zoo, he was named a "pooh" bear by the authors daughter one day

  • Where can you get the "wonderful winnipeg" song?

  • Does anyone know when the DVD of this is coming out?

  • The dvd is out now.

  • Do you have a link? Amazon seems to disagree with you.

  • Is the dvd a Blockbuster Exclusive right now?

  • This was the most underrated movie of 2008.

  • My aunt was in this.

    Mia Van Leeuwen.

I don't think it was a very big part though.

    o.o

  • This film is amazing. And actually made me want to experience a Winnipeg winter.Theres always real beauty beneath dark skies and driving snow.

  • Funny how of all provincial Captials and Candian Metros Winnipeg gets the dubious distinction be being winterpeg, well at least something...

  • 1:16 :[ Jets? LOL@1:46 Man Pageants! i have lived in winnipeg my whole life, all 16 years of it.. i hate it. but at the same time.. i love it :[

  • born and raised

  • I'm from winnipeg, and its effing so cold.

  • i like this city and all, but man a hate these fucking winters. most people from winnipeg will say more bad things about it than people who aren't from there

  • Winnipeg is very ccol...in the Winter...it is my hometown...what is not to love......

  • I LOVED this movie. It's sort of insane and sometimes even boring, but it's beautiful too and haunting and I know I'll never forget it. Does anyone know where to get a copy of the old song that's sung in the trailer and in the title sequence of the film ("Wonderful Winnipeg")? I'm a native New Yorker, never been north of Toronto, but it speaks to me, too.

  • This movie was incredibly beautiful.

  • i fell a sleep watching this movie, it made me very tired.

  • "This time I'm leaving for good... again."

always makes me laugh. I've left "the 'Peg" three times, and guess what? I'm back again!

    (and enjoying it!)

  • *laughs* I think most people who try to escape end up coming back.

I'm on escape attempt 6 now. Maybe 7 will be my lucky number.

  • kinda profound

  • Can't wiat to see it!

  • WTF? Looks good, though I'm still confused on what it is.

  • I la la la looove winnipeg !

  • Maddin's best film so far.

  • Toronto is the mecca of people with very similiar attitudes as yours. What the fuck does Toronto have 3 losing sports teams? Winnipeg may be cold and desolate, but the people make it awesome with the fellowship that comes with pushing a complete strangers car out of a snow bank. Our music scene also owns, and our girls are hotter.

  • the girl thing is true but other then that the people here suck...iunno what area u live in but the the people in this city are assholes.....and i was born in toronto and that city takes a shit on winnipeg......

  • people in winnipeg are assholes, haha fuck that, Torontonians are known for being arrogant and assholish, not that I beleive everyone from Toronto is an asshole. But I think if you did a survey it would overwhelmingly state that Winnipeg has friendlier people than Toronto, but who cares.

  • I'll have you know that the Manitoba Moose are kicking everyone's ass right now.

  • ya....in the AHL

  • Winnipeg is a great city. There are people who want to leave, but these are the same people who exhibit "the grass is always greener" attitude. Clearly though, the grass is not always greener, and Winnipeg is awesome if you actually take part in the culture and events the city has to offer. Don't just sit on your couch and complain.

  • yeah folk fest, folkarama, the forks, the MTS centre, we are currently building a 7 million dollar water park and what else do we have hmmm? a downtown where you will be raped or stabbed at night? umm nope shh

  • What a fantastic film.

  • Im not sure I was on enough stuff to fully grasp this movie. What type of drugs compliment this film well? I would like to see the light but it seemed I wasn't in the correct state of mind. I guess basically what I'm asking is which drugs should i be on when i watch it the second time

  • If you need drugs to enjoy something than you have problems.

That doesn't matter though, because this was obviously a backhanded comment. Yea, you don't need to be high to enjoy this film, moron.

  • weirdest movie ive ever seen

  • The Song is called "wonderful winnipeg" i forget who its by

  • whats this song? i want to find it (yes the ancient one at the end)

  • yeahhh

  • i love this Guy Madden! I'm going to meet you one day:)))

Natalie from Winnipeg living in Los Angeles: missing where I'm from

  • i met him... you can probably meet him too if you buy him dinner cause I don't think like famous famous

  • I love you winnipeg

  • you need to rot in hell you stupid ignorant FREAK

  • Shit Gurl!!!!! I guess u really love Winnipeg! What about the people who are still here...?

  • I just watched this movie at the cheap seats in Winnipeg and it was one of the best cinematic experiences I've had in years. If I ever run into Guy Maddin on the street I'll demand he let me buy him a pint.

  • Terrifying.. I managed to escape Winnipeg just in time.

  • Amazing how you winnipegers want so badly to leave and some of us outsiders just want to be there in Winnipeg...

  • O_o LEAVE Winnipeg?! absurd! I never want to leave!! ^_^

  • Who WANTS to move to Winnipeg? who are these outsiders you speak of?

  • I, for once, am one of them

  • Great comment, but, until you've lived a couple of winters, here,

    think about it.

  • Well, I did spend half a winter there. It was fun because it was different from everything else, but I can see what you mean ^^

  • Yeah, we've had some -36C nights(and -30 days already.

    February is always COLDEST!

  • Meet the Spartans is better.

  • Meet the Fockers is even Better

  • I really like how there is so much hidden meaning behind this movie. I'm from Winnipeg... and I know exactly what he means by "this time I'm going to leave", it's so true for us Winnipeggers. We never leave... for some reason once you're in this city, you're stuck here. Only a select few leave and stay gone... most come back after a while. personally, I wouldn't see this movie because it looks stupid, but it's a good idea.

  • its alive i tells ye! we must band together and kill the heart!!!!!

  • I had almost forgotten how magical movies could be until I saw this!

  • It lasted about a week and something in san francisco...

that's ok, when it comes out on video, I'm going to project it onto the side of a white building on van ness, heading north.

My first attempt at this sort of thing was done in 1967, when I projected across the street onto my parents white house my friends reg 8mm R rated sex movie...Jumping Jack Jane. We were in his garage across the street..(at night). The whole damn house was suddenly covered with this nude girl doing jumping jacks.

  • Oh man, i am moving from winnipeg. it makes me so sad.

  • So? Has anyone figured out the song at the end of this trailer? They tell you in the credits...but now I've completely forgotten and the song is driving me mad.

  • I saw the film today...

Each time the wrecking ball hit the arena i felt the impact in my heart. It is good to know that I am not the only one who has such feelings about my hometown, and I eagerly await the day when all of my schooling is done and I can return to home to Winnipeg.

  • Best Movie I've seen this year! I laughed I cried.

Movie making should be an Art and that is what Guy Maddin has delivered. Having lived in Winnipeg for about as long as Guy I have to agree with him on the pathetic civic leadership we have endured for far too long.

    Also Fuck the NHL!

  • this was filmed on my cousins street!

  • . . . which they've probably knocked down already!;) I had a powerful experience straight after seeing this film in London: at Leicester Square, just a minute's walk from the cinema, I was shocked to discover that they've knocked down the Swiss Centre, a building that's been there as long as I've known London - gone. I've got fond memories of the place as I used to watch films there so I'd've been stunned at any time but after seeing Maddin's magnificent film (Eatons, the Arena etc) - ouch!

  • Saw this a couple of days ago. Absolutely stunning!! Historical, witty, beautiful, geographical, psychological, haunting. An art film that really works an art film and is not pretentious. A cinematic poem. Also extremely funny.

  • Really nice, I mean extremely!!!!

  • Omg! I really want to see this movie!

It's looks pretty good, also I grew up in winnipeg!

  • i just went to see this...this has to be my favorite!...i would recommend this film for any guy maddin admirer

  • I dident really mind that it was black and white. It was an interesting movie. The whole time i kinda wanted more of a back and forth story line thow. I kept thinking it was gana get away from the whole poem documentary thing and that would just be the opening part. Althow once i got into it i liked it.

  • Omg, Thank You Guy~! We Love You!!!!!!!

  • I don't get why people have issues with black and white movies. It actually looks pretty cool and different. : )

  • Does anyone know the singer who sings "wonderful winnipeg" in this trailer?

  • i dont know

but i was wondering that too

it sure is catchy as hell :)

  • IIRC, "Wonderful Winnipeg" was written and performed by Leon Naleway, and self-issued as a 45 rpm record. (He gave my mother a copy after she wrote a business magazine story about the family catering business, which operated in the North End in the 60s).

  • yes yes, the black AND the white

  • One of the best films I've seen this year. The imagery and poetry of it acted as a tool of great nostalgia.

  • Too bad intelligence and taste did not transfer to the 21st Century as well.

  • I really think you´re on the wrong life.

  • Shut up! Fucking junkie..

  • your right. pokemon is the shit....idiot

  • with films like this being made of course it isn't

  • it adds drimaticefect u fag

  • Looks fantastic. I recently missed a chance to see it at a film festival - but I really want to see this. Bring on a DVD release.

  • Looks superb and has film-noir legend Ann Savage in it!

  • I Don't Get It And I'm From Manitoba, Canada

  • Go work on your Irish whip...

  • Not In A Bad Way I Don't Get It But If I Watched It I'd Get It.

  • looks superb, inspired even

"escaping the mother" - there should be more movies about this. (PSYCHO is the ubertext.)

  • errrmmmm.........

  • Seems interesting. :D I wanna watch it. I like the aspect of it, of old black and white film. The movie looks disturbing, which makes it all the more interesting. :^)
