hi Guy! its Louis Wrightman again here's my email louwright39@hotmail.com I would love to discuss my project with you & your potential interest as director. louwright39@hotmail.com
Hi Guy! Great work! I'm an actor/writer in Toronto although I have been living in California many yrs. I wrote a screenplay that I think you might be IDEAL for as director. You can find my demo on youtube under Louis Wrightman & you can contact me thru there! Thanx! Louis
I lived in Winnipeg from September 1999 to January 18, 2008. I have lived and worked elsewhere in Canada, and can attest that this city is trapped in the dreamy past of Winter. I hope that anyone who has any real talent will get of of there and never return, leaving the city to slip further into the abyss of mediocrity and a longing for the past.
when i was a lil boy growing up i seen fights murders creepers crawling in the night so much memories i was calling Winnipeg windowpeg lol cause i seen so much windows lol!

This was a terrible film. The only slightly amusing skit was "Ledgeman". The other 79 min were crap. Winnipeg's isolation and cold actually make it a sort of interesting city. Madden, however, never really figured out how it is so quirky. Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming Madden. Making a good film on a low budget must be really difficult. I just wonder about the people who think this film is good. What do they usually watch? Latvian TV at 3am?
What other big city has 6 months of snow & cold & about 4 months of mosquitoes? You get about 2 months out of the year where you can actually go outside & enjoy the weather. Unique? Yeah. A film about it would almost write itself, no? I dunno, because I haven't seen it. I do think we are a hardy bunch, putting up with the weather here. And, any province that produced Neil Young & Margaret Laurence couldn't be all that bad, could it?
not to mention "winni" the pooh which was a black bear brought to england in the first world war as a mascot for the regiment and ended up in a zoo, he was named a "pooh" bear by the authors daughter one day
i like this city and all, but man a hate these fucking winters. most people from winnipeg will say more bad things about it than people who aren't from there

Small parts of this movie are interesting. But unfortunately there are too many people in Winnipeg who have something in common with this guy. A stubborn, insecure man living in the past who has to re-create his own childhood just to live again under the stiff rule of his mother. Boo hoo I want my wolseley tree and eaton's building back. I was waiting for him to start asking to bring back the gold standard. The Berlin wall doesn't surrounding the city, just get out if you want. Two thumbs down
I LOVED this movie. It's sort of insane and sometimes even boring, but it's beautiful too and haunting and I know I'll never forget it. Does anyone know where to get a copy of the old song that's sung in the trailer and in the title sequence of the film ("Wonderful Winnipeg")? I'm a native New Yorker, never been north of Toronto, but it speaks to me, too.

are you nuts? this city is a peice of shit on a stick...but then agian its all g if you like your city dogg..im from toronto and i love that city.....straight up in my opinion winnipeg is a boring shitty grimy place
Toronto is the mecca of people with very similiar attitudes as yours. What the fuck does Toronto have 3 losing sports teams? Winnipeg may be cold and desolate, but the people make it awesome with the fellowship that comes with pushing a complete strangers car out of a snow bank. Our music scene also owns, and our girls are hotter.
the girl thing is true but other then that the people here suck...iunno what area u live in but the the people in this city are assholes.....and i was born in toronto and that city takes a shit on winnipeg......
people in winnipeg are assholes, haha fuck that, Torontonians are known for being arrogant and assholish, not that I beleive everyone from Toronto is an asshole. But I think if you did a survey it would overwhelmingly state that Winnipeg has friendlier people than Toronto, but who cares.
Winnipeg is a great city. There are people who want to leave, but these are the same people who exhibit "the grass is always greener" attitude. Clearly though, the grass is not always greener, and Winnipeg is awesome if you actually take part in the culture and events the city has to offer. Don't just sit on your couch and complain.
yeah folk fest, folkarama, the forks, the MTS centre, we are currently building a 7 million dollar water park and what else do we have hmmm? a downtown where you will be raped or stabbed at night? umm nope shh

I just watched this movie at the cheap seats in Winnipeg and it was one of the best cinematic experiences I've had in years. If I ever run into Guy Maddin on the street I'll demand he let me buy him a pint.
I really like how there is so much hidden meaning behind this movie. I'm from Winnipeg... and I know exactly what he means by "this time I'm going to leave", it's so true for us Winnipeggers. We never leave... for some reason once you're in this city, you're stuck here. Only a select few leave and stay gone... most come back after a while. personally, I wouldn't see this movie because it looks stupid, but it's a good idea.
It lasted about a week and something in san francisco...
that's ok, when it comes out on video, I'm going to project it onto the side of a white building on van ness, heading north.
My first attempt at this sort of thing was done in 1967, when I projected across the street onto my parents white house my friends reg 8mm R rated sex movie...Jumping Jack Jane. We were in his garage across the street..(at night). The whole damn house was suddenly covered with this nude girl doing jumping jacks.
So? Has anyone figured out the song at the end of this trailer? They tell you in the credits...but now I've completely forgotten and the song is driving me mad.
Each time the wrecking ball hit the arena i felt the impact in my heart. It is good to know that I am not the only one who has such feelings about my hometown, and I eagerly await the day when all of my schooling is done and I can return to home to Winnipeg.
Best Movie I've seen this year! I laughed I cried.
Movie making should be an Art and that is what Guy Maddin has delivered. Having lived in Winnipeg for about as long as Guy I have to agree with him on the pathetic civic leadership we have endured for far too long.
. . . which they've probably knocked down already!;) I had a powerful experience straight after seeing this film in London: at Leicester Square, just a minute's walk from the cinema, I was shocked to discover that they've knocked down the Swiss Centre, a building that's been there as long as I've known London - gone. I've got fond memories of the place as I used to watch films there so I'd've been stunned at any time but after seeing Maddin's magnificent film (Eatons, the Arena etc) - ouch!
Saw this a couple of days ago. Absolutely stunning!! Historical, witty, beautiful, geographical, psychological, haunting. An art film that really works an art film and is not pretentious. A cinematic poem. Also extremely funny.

IIRC, "Wonderful Winnipeg" was written and performed by Leon Naleway, and self-issued as a 45 rpm record. (He gave my mother a copy after she wrote a business magazine story about the family catering business, which operated in the North End in the 60s).
Seems interesting. :D I wanna watch it. I like the aspect of it, of old black and white film. The movie looks disturbing, which makes it all the more interesting. :^)

Seems interesting. :D I wanna watch it. I like the aspect of it, of old black and white film. The movie looks disturbing, which makes it all the more interesting. :^)
