Great video, it was not Bowie's first appearance on tv (that was with the protest group against discrimination of long-haired people!) but it's surely the first time he sings. He still looks so ordinary but he's so relaxed and it's so professional. And exactly the tune for that year when the first steps on the moon were made. The BBC started every broadcast with Bowie's Space Oddity and thats why he got famous. This week I still saw this song used as tune for new space trips. It's also my first
What amazes me is how amazing Bowie was between 1971- 77 and how shite he was before and after. Believe me, I've tried to like his back catalogue, and 'newer' stuff, but all it ever does is make me wonder the aforementioned. Space Oddity isn't too bad, but I still cringe when he reminds that he thinks his spaceship 'knows which way to go.' :)
It's amazing to hear how this song changed so much over the years. There's a version of this song during his Let's Dance years in the 80s that sounds quite different than this early live version. In fact, I'd wager it's that version most of us are familiar with. I know that's the version I'm used to. But if you love the song go pick up the book of the same name.
@Hacker73 Now I recall that English TV used the PAL standard instead of the North America NTSC. I don't know a lot about PAL beyond it's frame rate and number of lines per frame but do know it renders color better. The French took color further with SECAM. Perhaps English TV studios simply used better audio equipment such as the Struder reel to reel tape recorder. When you watch The Beatles All You Need Is Love it can be seen there is a reel to reel machine in the foreground.
He sounds like a Beatle, only he is much prettier than all four of them. We don't get to see actual raw live talent like this any more. It's too bad he was so insecure about his singing and playing instruments back then because he was amazing.
you can see bowie laughing at how awful that backup band is.. i mean, COMPLETELY fucked him up on the hand claps part the first time, then just decided not to even do it the second...
Wow, what a terrific clip / footage / live performance version ! Great guitar solo in the middle and David's singing is good too. A nice complimentary version to the better known recorded video clip. Thanks for uploading.
Michael Sheen in 'Tron Legacy' looks like Ziggy Stardust.
Watch Nicholas Roeg's film "The Man Who Fell to Earth". Bowie plays the title role, and it's brilliant. His best acting performance.
This song is brilliant! it has almost a euphoric effect on me. i can't explain it, but something about how the music all comes together around 1:30 just makes me feel like i'm floating or something. its so weird, but i feel so connected with the music its almost supernatural.
I remember seeing him on either "Don Kirschner's In Concert" or "Midnight Special" (71ish) doing a "The Devil's Daughter" in a white satin tuxedo, shirtless with the red hair...Would love to see how well my memory serves me 40 years later.
@essertpitay ah yes well i was referring to the fact that he is a british icon. infact, he is pure british, technically, for being half scottish and half english.
if he didn't go through the "hippie era", he wouldn't have made this song, he was always ahead of his time, and he always will be, dosn't matter what year he's in, he always delivers. we share a birthday with the late elvis presley, this being the 8th january, luv on ya david, xxx
I have to disagree with this bio - Young Americans his first major success in the US? Ziggy was a classic the moment it was released, and Diamond Dogs was one of the biggest tours of the year - right up there with Pink Floyd's Animals tour. I remember them both selling out Madison Square Garden.
@cmcgarry007 also the bio kind of implies that he went from 'young americans' to 'low'. this is obviously missing out 'station to station' which was a transition between the two not to mention a critical and commercial success.
I don't know why, but I don't care what he looks like or what he's singing...it's the way he does it, the singing and the performing, the only way he seems to do it . He carries himself differently. He seems like a down to earth sort of person, but out of this world. :)
Epic. I don't know why anyone thinks he looks/sounds nervous, as he seems quite relaxed here (can't you see him laugh almost every time the 'pit' guitarist tries to mimic the song's sound effects, usually with bad results?). @EvaRamone and why do boys now love to wear thick frame glasses? why do boys now wear pants half their ass? and what about those pants with that ridiculous embroidering in the back pockets (True Religion)? and the skinny jeans? zigtech reeboks? All those things that are cool now will look silly in 20 years. And some smart person in 2030 will make a sarcastic comment like yours about a video of 2011 and then you will post one like mine today. Cheers!
