I could swear I was like hearing a story while listening to/watching this. Especially at 1:23 when that man was looking at Michael in pure amazement ( we had similar facial expressions ).
The first time i heard this song and saw this video was with my taoism master and great friend... R. I. P. Johns... i'll still remember our good times my old friend,,, i will always miss you...
As a bass player, I am of course in awe of Michael's playing. The thing that I think is interesting, though, is that for my friends for whom I've played Michael's music, this piece is usually their favorite. They don't see all the technical prowess that goes into producing the track. They just listen and love it. Then, of course, I show them a video of Michael playing the piece and they are totally astonished.
I always get tears in my eyes when I see that grown up man at 1:25 looking in awe at Michael, just like a little boy who just saw the coolest thing in his life!
@MostEvil7string I may be 25, but I am a little boy who just saw the coolest thing in his life. Cant recall how many times Ive watched MM and felt the same way...what a fantastic musician!
words cannot describe what i'm thinking right now... i'm not even a bass player, just the fact that he's such a great musician that he can make you feel exactly what he's feeling through his playing. absolutely marvellous.
This is the first time I've really enjoyed him honestly ( w no disrespect at all to him). Its as though he's introduced a pedal steel element to the instrument w all the hipshot stuff, it's similar in concept. really pretty stuff!
At ca 1.33 is a shot of an audience member, motionless, lower jaw on floor. Same was the case the one time I saw him live (ca 500 people, all floored). Hedges is no longer with us, tragically, but what he and Michael M started in Baltimore back in the early 80s is, fortunately, alive and thriving.
Eden heads seem to be favored by people who like really clicky, zingy fretless tones. Tried one with a P-Bass once, but that was probably not a very good combination.
@spynae Ehh, I use an Eden that my friend owns with P, J, Ric, MM, whatever and it sounds fine. I've gotten to know it pretty well since my SVT's blown a tube and I couldn't afford to change it.
@bobbyflay There is no groove in what he does, no steady groove.. I think. He is just soloing, and that's the beauty of his songs. Groove is another type of beauty.. there are various types of beauty in music I believe.
I also have friends who play other instruments, or who don't play instruments, but love music, and they love this song too.
Here's something I find interesting: often, my friends haven't seen Michael play it, and have no idea what a Hyperbass is, or that the song has 100+ tunings. It's just a beautiful composition, beautifully played. If I show them a video of Michael playing the piece, they're just floored.
@therealgtarbeast666 first off: Evan is fantastic but to say he is better than Manring in anyway is a lie. second: thats a CD. it has hours of editing put into it to take out imperfections. third: Manring plays a fretless and is doing something that no one has EVER done with a string instrument. in a sense he is setting the stage for the future progression of this technology and he is doing it damn well. many people will never take advantage of this new creation as much as he is here.
@johncraig1379 And that means what other than that? Are we influenced vicariously through somebody's influences or what is perceived of their actions? Thanks for the info.
@slinky1killed1bill He's also at 1:24. Hilarious. So is your phrase, "stoned on Hyperbass goodness." Shit yeah, I get stoned on it all the time. Especially with this video.
I truely believe that through this song Michael proves that he is one of the best musicians in the world. Playing an instrument is so much more than the technical aspect...I think the biggest part is when a musician can make you feel what they are feeling....and he does this amazingly through this song. He is definetly in touch with the spirit of things in his playing. Got to meet him one time and he is also a very humble guy...impressed with him all the way around. Hats off to you Michael.
The word "genius" gets tossed around a lot. To me, playing lots of notes really fast doesn't necessarily make someone a genius. Rethinking the very concept of the bass, then helping bring it to fruition, then composing a song like this (and many other Manring compositions)... *that's* genius.
Okay, this song is awesome, but I'm distracted by the gorgeous, pricey bass and the FULL rack of effects/whatnot. A bit of gear envy on my part?? Oh, yes!... lol
@pengyou55 Yeah right... A fretless bass with little clickers on the tunekeys to change notes, and some kind of switch back at the base of the strings too? I mean shit. Give this thing to victor wooten. I don't even play bass, I play guitar, but hell...
@RoufasthaSage The tuners are Hipshot tuners which allows the player to instantly change the string from one open note to the next (like going from E to D on the top string of a guitar with one click, instead of retuning it). At the end of the base is an adjustable bridge that affects the tension across some or all the strings at once. This model has two positions, I believe.
@RoufasthaSage This technology has been around for a while actually.Lever harps have had levers that change the tuning of a string a half-step while playing.
@libbininamerica The only people who move on from this music are those who didn't really like it in the first place.Or they are people who only get into music because it's new.Not because they like it.Most don't toss aside music they really love.
I live for the technical solo artists out there. While I can certainly appreciate the talent, the end result must be a bit beyond me. It seems devoid of........I guess what I consider substance.
@josebuencamino I know :-) .... I'm simply being an obnoxious old fart. This is quite beautiful music, and definitely more divine than DJ shoot ta' kill and fat hoe posse music.
This is amazing. This one piece is probably more inspirational, more creative, more unique and more talented than about 90% of all mainstream music of the last 20 years. Great job.
I've watched this video now about a thousand times, and it is just as mesmerizing and transporting now as it was the first time. Thanks so much for sharing.
@666doomsdaymachine Isn't it weird to think that 300,000 people is considered a small amount now? I mean, that's enough to fill a really big stadium five times.
This song is pure emotion, and you can see it in his face and the way he plays. This beautiful piece of music and I think if Jaco was still alive he would agree that this is beautiful. Not all songs have to be upbeat and jazzy, and a contest to see how many notes are played is just ignorant. Jaco and Michael have different styles and Michael does rock out too.
@ValtielHead Michael once said in an interview in reference to playing styles and whether all music should be "Groovin".He said"Were not all trying to do the same thing"I think this applies here.
Considering the state of the world, politics, warfare and how degraded the human mind can become, people such as Mr. Manring prove that life is beautiful.
That wasn't Lady Gaga, maybe it was Madonna, because Lady Gaga is a real musician able to play real instruments (like a piano:-) for example) on an really advanced level.
I first began listening to Michael in 1993. His bass playing and techniques are revolutionary on the instrument, and this piece is in my opinion the echelon of his works. I could never hear this song enough. Truly a masterpiece.
@oatsintheoven yes, he has hipshot detuners on all four strings as well as tuning devices on the bridge, and he also turns the pegs due to his mastery of the hyperbass he knows just how to stay in tune.
@oatsintheoven the Zon Hyperbass lets you change the tuning of each string with the flick of a "switch". there's a switch for each of the tuning knobs at the head, then there are 2 switches on the bridge (one on bottom one on top). At the bridge, the bottom switch changes the ratio of what the top switch changes, so you can change the tuning one whole step up/down, 1 half step up/down from the bridge
don't expect to buy this just because it looks "cool" because it cost AT LEAST $8000 :P
I seriously can't understand why this video has dislikes.

@tnhomeboy Okay, now you put a tear in my eye with that comment. Here's to Jaco. :-]
...... and Manning. Not the most technical piece I've heard, but definitely one of the most beautiful Bass compositions. This is just beautiful.

I can't believe Lady Gaga watched this 17 times!

@jazzpsalti
That wasn't Lady Gaga, maybe it was Madonna, because Lady Gaga is a real musician able to play real instruments (like a piano:-) for example) on an really advanced level.

Now that's a wonderful and perfectly appropriate use of excessive tricks and toys.

manring's knowledge of the bass is rediculous, who else knows how to play in different tunings?

I first began listening to Michael in 1993. His bass playing and techniques are revolutionary on the instrument, and this piece is in my opinion the echelon of his works. I could never hear this song enough. Truly a masterpiece.

his he changing the tuning of his bass just like that?
oatsintheoven 1 year ago
@oatsintheoven yes, he has hipshot detuners on all four strings as well as tuning devices on the bridge, and he also turns the pegs due to his mastery of the hyperbass he knows just how to stay in tune.
phounqueman 1 year ago
@phounqueman thanks, sounds like your a musician as well. I knew what he was doing but didn't know the whole inter workings of it.
oatsintheoven 1 year ago
@oatsintheoven the Zon Hyperbass lets you change the tuning of each string with the flick of a "switch". there's a switch for each of the tuning knobs at the head, then there are 2 switches on the bridge (one on bottom one on top). At the bridge, the bottom switch changes the ratio of what the top switch changes, so you can change the tuning one whole step up/down, 1 half step up/down from the bridge
don't expect to buy this just because it looks "cool" because it cost AT LEAST $8000 :P
