  • I seriously can't understand why this video has dislikes.

  • Оригинально завораживает! Сам в прошлом басист...

  • and the audience is very silent and listening...

  • His facial expression during and after the song speaks volumes: intense and pure joy.

  • Are those round wound strings he's using?

  • I've seen this video countless times along the years; it never gets old.

  • I could swear I was like hearing a story while listening to/watching this. Especially at 1:23 when that man was looking at Michael in pure amazement ( we had similar facial expressions ).

  • qu delicia de som!

  • amazing!!!

  • The first time i heard this song and saw this video was with my taoism master and great friend... R. I. P. Johns... i'll still remember our good times my old friend,,, i will always miss you...

  • Замечательный музыкант, явно получающий удовольствие от игры.

    Очень нравится!!!

  • I randomly get the urge to listen to song every once in a while since I heard it a year or so ago. Still gives me chills every time.

  • Magic

  • me llevo a otro lugar...

    tremendo...

  • As a bass player, I am of course in awe of Michael's playing. The thing that I think is interesting, though, is that for my friends for whom I've played Michael's music, this piece is usually their favorite. They don't see all the technical prowess that goes into producing the track. They just listen and love it. Then, of course, I show them a video of Michael playing the piece and they are totally astonished.

  • Fantastic!!!!!

  • from what ive heard this song has 14 different tunings!!!!

  • What album is this song from? Not that it matters, since I'm going to buy them all now..

  • @Verse34k - the album is 'Thonk'

  • Dislikes? I would like to cut your anus's out and hang them on your noses.

  • I always get tears in my eyes when I see that grown up man at 1:25 looking in awe at Michael, just like a little boy who just saw the coolest thing in his life!

  • @MostEvil7string I may be 25, but I am a little boy who just saw the coolest thing in his life. Cant recall how many times Ive watched MM and felt the same way...what a fantastic musician!

  • The poem becomes Bass

  • words cannot describe what i'm thinking right now... i'm not even a bass player, just the fact that he's such a great musician that he can make you feel exactly what he's feeling through his playing. absolutely marvellous.

  • not much for the type of bass he's playing, but he's very good. this piece is a little slow and mellow for my tastes, though.

  • How did you get Michael Manring to come play at your house? That's badass! :)

  • Bravo c'est vraiment beau et relaxant

  • This is the first time I've really enjoyed him honestly ( w no disrespect at all to him). Its as though he's introduced a pedal steel element to the instrument w all the hipshot stuff, it's similar in concept. really pretty stuff!

  • Hedges is smiling from wherever he is...

  • one of the best things i´ve ever heard....

  • que tipo tan crak....

  • Omg... @ 2:53 I can hear a dolphin smiling at me.

  • @1:23 That guy's face perfectly represents mine while watching this.

  • Where's John Entwhistle when you need him?

  • WHERE DO THOSE HARMONICS COME FROM? I CAN'T FIND THEM.

  • c'mon.. stop comparing Michael Manring to Jesus!! He's awesome and shit, but he's not Manring!

  • Manring is better to Jesus

  • @SanMarin Keep your faith in music, it has killed far less people than religion, music has healed so many people up.

  • @SanMarin that's so lame i m gonna dislike the vid because of your comment :D

  • Fucking luckiest people ever over there assisting this...., fuck money, fuck lottery. This is what is would prefer over all that.

  • At ca 1.33 is a shot of an audience member, motionless, lower jaw on floor. Same was the case the one time I saw him live (ca 500 people, all floored). Hedges is no longer with us, tragically, but what he and Michael M started in Baltimore back in the early 80s is, fortunately, alive and thriving.

  • Eden heads seem to be favored by people who like really clicky, zingy fretless tones. Tried one with a P-Bass once, but that was probably not a very good combination.

  • @spynae Ehh, I use an Eden that my friend owns with P, J, Ric, MM, whatever and it sounds fine. I've gotten to know it pretty well since my SVT's blown a tube and I couldn't afford to change it.

  • Absolutely beautiful composition. Met him before, he such a lovely man

  • His song make peaple cry

  • he's an amazing bassist, and he's a genius. the only "problem" i have is that it's difficult to feel out the groove

  • @bobbyflay There is no groove in what he does, no steady groove.. I think. He is just soloing, and that's the beauty of his songs. Groove is another type of beauty.. there are various types of beauty in music I believe.

  • @abouzeid91 Absolutely

  • Evan Brewer's aight. Manring's on a different level completely.

  • Very cool.

    1 performance.

20 or so people in your living room.

    and 350,000 people on YouTube!

Thanks for sharing with the world.

  • There aren't many that can say they have truly and completely mastered an instrument, but if this isn't mastery, i don't know what is.

  • i cry my orbits out so bad each time i listen to this godlike masterwork!

MIchael you are our new Deity!

  • I play bass and I dearly love this song.

I also have friends who play other instruments, or who don't play instruments, but love music, and they love this song too.

Here's something I find interesting: often, my friends haven't seen Michael play it, and have no idea what a Hyperbass is, or that the song has 100+ tunings. It's just a beautiful composition, beautifully played. If I show them a video of Michael playing the piece, they're just floored.

  • Just perfect.. I can close my eyes and be happy anywhere, anytime hearing this song

  • fuck he came here and i had never heard of him till i watched this. but i think evan brewer's all bass cd is alot neater than this guy

  • @therealgtarbeast666 first off: Evan is fantastic but to say he is better than Manring in anyway is a lie. second: thats a CD. it has hours of editing put into it to take out imperfections. third: Manring plays a fretless and is doing something that no one has EVER done with a string instrument. in a sense he is setting the stage for the future progression of this technology and he is doing it damn well. many people will never take advantage of this new creation as much as he is here.

  • Dude that's pretty dam impressive

  • A good friend of mine has been playing bass for 12 years. I showed him this video and he said "I get jealous when I see people this good."

  • Transported to bliss. :-)

  • i dont even play bass.but god damn i wish i wrote this.

  • Victor Wooten used to be my bass idol. Not anymore... lol

  • @andoidbassking vitor used to be your bass idol then you took a MAnring in the kneeXD

  • absolutely beautiful.

  • this shit is fuckin trippy as fuck

  • This video makes you want to do one of two things:

    1. Put the bass in the closet and give up

    2. Pick up the bass and keep practicing...

    ...I'm going with 2 hahaha

  • its his chord knowledge, and the beautiful drops in tuning. damn.

  • I hear a lot of Michael Hedges in this.

  • @DieFatorLiveThin Totally relate to that :) Hedges will forever influence musicians of great integrity and quality.

  • @RabidCookie Except Jaco Pastorius was his teacher.

  • @johncraig1379 And that means what other than that? Are we influenced vicariously through somebody's influences or what is perceived of their actions? Thanks for the info.

  • Delightful.

  • what can you say after that ?

  • Stupefying.

  • One of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard in the world.

  • The guy at 2:30 looks like he's stoned on Hyperbass goodness. xD

  • @slinky1killed1bill He's also at 1:24. Hilarious. So is your phrase, "stoned on Hyperbass goodness." Shit yeah, I get stoned on it all the time. Especially with this video.

  • Enormous pleasure. Thank you.

  • I truely believe that through this song Michael proves that he is one of the best musicians in the world. Playing an instrument is so much more than the technical aspect...I think the biggest part is when a musician can make you feel what they are feeling....and he does this amazingly through this song. He is definetly in touch with the spirit of things in his playing. Got to meet him one time and he is also a very humble guy...impressed with him all the way around. Hats off to you Michael.

  • 19 people are just mad that they computer speakers are damage.

  • @rojas2284 I think they're just deaf to magic.

  • REspect !!

  • Massive! Reminds me of some of the impossible things Phil Keaggy does live on guitar. This is genius playing!

  • no words, just great!!!

  • 2:55... that feeling, those chills, its all music is about (for me)

  • 2:55... that feeling, those shills, is everything music is about (for me)

  • Muita pose pra pouca sonoridade.

  • whoa

  • I'm sure somebody has asked this already, but how the hell did Michael Manring end up performing in your house? Friend of yours or something?

  • this is hillarious... it makes me crying.. nirvana

  • This version is so much better than the studio version. He plays it slower and very smoothly... fits the mood of the music better :)

  • holdsworth and manring should collab. NOW!

  • @simmsmetre yep.Trilok Gurtu on percussion.

  • Play this Chuck Norris!!

  • @dje2671 Chuck Norris breaks into tears and bows to his Superior.

  • The word "genius" gets tossed around a lot. To me, playing lots of notes really fast doesn't necessarily make someone a genius. Rethinking the very concept of the bass, then helping bring it to fruition, then composing a song like this (and many other Manring compositions)... *that's* genius.

  • @BassByTheBay exactly.

  • @BassByTheBay This is truly brilliant artistry, he is on the outside looking out. :-)

  • woa....what the hell is that thing?

  • Hahaha I love the guy's face at 1:54. He's just completely dumbfounded. That's what my face looks like right now, too.

  • what a player...what a tone. makes love to my ears...

  • Okay, this song is awesome, but I'm distracted by the gorgeous, pricey bass and the FULL rack of effects/whatnot. A bit of gear envy on my part?? Oh, yes!... lol

  • @pengyou55 Yeah right... A fretless bass with little clickers on the tunekeys to change notes, and some kind of switch back at the base of the strings too? I mean shit. Give this thing to victor wooten. I don't even play bass, I play guitar, but hell...

  • @RoufasthaSage The tuners are Hipshot tuners which allows the player to instantly change the string from one open note to the next (like going from E to D on the top string of a guitar with one click, instead of retuning it). At the end of the base is an adjustable bridge that affects the tension across some or all the strings at once. This model has two positions, I believe.

  • @RoufasthaSage This technology has been around for a while actually.Lever harps have had levers that change the tuning of a string a half-step while playing.

  • this sounds like new age music. not feeling it at all.

i thought folks would have moved on from Bass Player Mag. wankery.

oh well, enjoy i guess. to each their own.

  • @libbininamerica The only people who move on from this music are those who didn't really like it in the first place.Or they are people who only get into music because it's new.Not because they like it.Most don't toss aside music they really love.

  • I live for the technical solo artists out there. While I can certainly appreciate the talent, the end result must be a bit beyond me. It seems devoid of........I guess what I consider substance.

  • This song is played during the Paradox lapse of time as you draw your terminal breath.

  • @josebuencamino Kinda' hard to say. Haven't been there yet.

  • @ObnoxiousOldFart I'm simply presenting a scenario that could fit in with this kind of divinity.

  • @josebuencamino I know :-) .... I'm simply being an obnoxious old fart. This is quite beautiful music, and definitely more divine than DJ shoot ta' kill and fat hoe posse music.

  • This is amazing. This one piece is probably more inspirational, more creative, more unique and more talented than about 90% of all mainstream music of the last 20 years. Great job.

  • @Arachnidius More inspirational than DJ kill yer momma and rape yer daddy while I squirt whipped cream up my arse music? Sacrilege!

  • there is one thing that comes to mind they musicians like this surpass music but start feeling music rather then saying how it works

  • I've watched this video now about a thousand times, and it is just as mesmerizing and transporting now as it was the first time. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • For those who don't know,you can get a newsletter from Michael Manring.At Manthing.com.

  • :O Mind is officially blown for the week. Thank you, Mr. Manring.

  • Watching stuff like this makes me realize the type of emulated bullshit that's pumped out and gets 200 gajillion views

I prefer that there's next to none for this, it's like a small crowd of people with a taste for something that could be called music

  • @666doomsdaymachine Isn't it weird to think that 300,000 people is considered a small amount now? I mean, that's enough to fill a really big stadium five times.

  • how lucky could you be to be part of this... divine !

  • Wow, epic! One of my favorites - so wonderful to watch Micheal play listen to.

  • This song is pure emotion, and you can see it in his face and the way he plays. This beautiful piece of music and I think if Jaco was still alive he would agree that this is beautiful. Not all songs have to be upbeat and jazzy, and a contest to see how many notes are played is just ignorant. Jaco and Michael have different styles and Michael does rock out too.

  • Minimalist? It's called a song that breaths. There's not a competition in ho w many notes one can play but the quality of the notes that are played.

  • @sneha1965

Actually, you're wrong. It is a contest, and this guy is in last place.

  • @sobman But that brings a whole 'nother idea to the spectrum. Is it better to be in last?

  • @ValtielHead Michael once said in an interview in reference to playing styles and whether all music should be "Groovin".He said"Were not all trying to do the same thing"I think this applies here.

  • @sobman Jaco was this guys teacher. Also, ever hear of Portrait of Tracy? He did softer songs as well. I would hardly consider this piece minimalist.

  • @sobman You want notes?Listen to "Helios"

  • I heard Jesus studied bass under Michael Manring.

  • @KapnKregg You mean Jaco. Manring studied under Jaco. Unless Michael Manring really is better than his teacher ever was. Just sayin'.

  • While watching, I was like the guy at 1:25 :-O

  • Where did a bass learn to do all that???

  • @thimacek Since Jaco Pastorious presented himself to the world.

  • Every time i watch / listen to this video, i am completely at peace. This isn't just music, its a miracle

  • almost transcendental.. almost? ;)

  • nobody puts manring in the corner

  • The motive in this song is so extremely beautifull... Kind of keeps you 'hanging'...

  • Considering the state of the world, politics, warfare and how degraded the human mind can become, people such as Mr. Manring prove that life is beautiful.

  • 2:27 = Shock and awe!!

  • Comment removed

  • 17 people like "The Tiny Room" better

  • The dude's face at 1:52 says it all

  • This is inspirational. Wonderful wonderful music from a very humble man. Thank you.

  • i love how he tunes down his bass and then back up later during some of his songs........ is just shows extreme talent

  • This piece gives me chills.

Michael Manring and Joe Zon have given the world something special here.

    Very beautiful, very enjoyable.

  • Somewhere Jaco is smiling......

  • @tnhomeboy

    jaco was michael's teacher !!!!!

  • @tnhomeboy Okay, now you put a tear in my eye with that comment. Here's to Jaco. :-]

...... and Manning. Not the most technical piece I've heard, but definitely one of the most beautiful Bass compositions. This is just beautiful.

  • Except that Jaco sucked big time.

  • People just come to see him play bass!

  • i just sat in total awe while watching this video.

  • I can't believe Lady Gaga watched this 17 times!

  • @jazzpsalti

That wasn't Lady Gaga, maybe it was Madonna, because Lady Gaga is a real musician able to play real instruments (like a piano:-) for example) on an really advanced level.

  • Now that's a wonderful and perfectly appropriate use of excessive tricks and toys.

  • how could you not cry to this

  • manring's knowledge of the bass is rediculous, who else knows how to play in different tunings?

  • Just love his attack, his skill and style along with that rig is so amazingly clear

  • this video should have over a million views.

  • I first began listening to Michael in 1993. His bass playing and techniques are revolutionary on the instrument, and this piece is in my opinion the echelon of his works. I could never hear this song enough. Truly a masterpiece.

  • his he changing the tuning of his bass just like that?

  • @oatsintheoven yes, he has hipshot detuners on all four strings as well as tuning devices on the bridge, and he also turns the pegs due to his mastery of the hyperbass he knows just how to stay in tune.

  • @phounqueman thanks, sounds like your a musician as well. I knew what he was doing but didn't know the whole inter workings of it.

  • @oatsintheoven the Zon Hyperbass lets you change the tuning of each string with the flick of a "switch". there's a switch for each of the tuning knobs at the head, then there are 2 switches on the bridge (one on bottom one on top). At the bridge, the bottom switch changes the ratio of what the top switch changes, so you can change the tuning one whole step up/down, 1 half step up/down from the bridge

don't expect to buy this just because it looks "cool" because it cost AT LEAST $8000 :P

  • the guys face in the background at 1:25 says it all

  • @thereaper2110 sure does. that's similar to the face I made when I first listened to thonk, one of his albums

  • he wrote this...

  • I wish michael could play in my house ...

  • @Coosanova

    he can

  • My mind just got blown out of every orifice at 5.2172864632718 squillion miles an hour.

  • First time I heard this piece, it brought me to a better place. It still does.
