It is interesting that Art Pepper seems to have been so completely wasted prior to recording this session. There is some great music to be heard here.
Laurie, I hope you're reading this. I've read Straight Life 8 times. I've never read any other book more than once, but that book was INTENSE and DEEPLY MOVING. I have one question regarding the book: Who is "Sammy Curtis"? What's his real name? I'm dying to know. Thanks!
This is an amazing project. I read "Straight Life" many years ago and it remains my favorite portrait of an artist and I look forward to watching the rest of the segments of your film.
I was driving home and heard about the clips on the radio (KPCC). I think it
s really cool that you're telling Art's story your way and through the recorded interviews, music and hands on viewpoint. I really dug his music and there is such an incredible body of grooves to check out that will keep us jazz yo-yo's discovering and rediscovering Art Pepper for generations to come. Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to following all of the clips as you make them available.
