I originally saw this film in 2004, and I have counted it as one of my favorites within my collection. I have seen this film about 20 times, I own it on dvd. I plan to get it on blu-ray someday as well. In this film alone, I look up to Bill the Butcher. Maybe its his confidence and the way he carries himself throughout the entire film that I look up to him for. Yes I know hes the villain in the film, but no doubt a very good one.
I know that Day Lewis's other performances, such as There Will be Blood and My Left Foot are more acclaimed than this, but like if you think he kicked their fuckin ass in this movie.
God damnit, we need MORE villains like Bill the Butcher. Villains who's character and principles isn't all black and white, with depth and compelling character.
Amsterdam Vallon: I'm not sure, sir. I never did quite figure it.
Bill: I'm forty-seven. Forty-seven years old. You know how I stayed alive this long? All these years? Fear. The spectacle of fearsome acts. Somebody steals from me, I cut off his hands. He offends me, I cut out his tongue. He rises against me, I cut off his head, stick it on a pike, raise it high up so all on the streets can see. That's what preserves the order of things. Fear.
Daniel Day Lewis AKA Bill The Butcher - "On the seventh day the Lord rested but before that he did he squated over the side of England and what came out of him was Ireland" ROFL !
I doubt whether a character like Bill the Butcher would have hated the Scots-Irish, since they are Protestant and British; the hatred of the nativists in the US was toward Catholic Irish people.
is it just me or does he sound slightly like a western godfather. not that he didn't pull it of, because he so did. it was great and unbelievably amazing! but i couldn't help but think at some parts he sounded like a western godfather. Anyways I'm a Daniel day lewis fan girl and think this is one of his best roles, and im dig'in the funny mustache. he should have kept it xD
They were furious with the city's blacks because the city's free negroes were often skilled artisans, economically and socially a rung or two above the newly arrived Irish, many of whom didn't speak English.
Great acting By DDL. But the Butcher was nobody to be admired.Yes he loved his country and proved it but he calls himself a "native" someone who fought and died FOR his country which he didn't do, he never lent his servcices to any war effort of the country and he was racist. You call mass murdering people fighting for your country? cus' thats all he did and hes the victum because he just loves his country
This is one of my favorite scenes, I never get tired of watching it. Daniel Day-Lewis is such a great actor. I wish he would accept more movie offers! /:

@jasper2008ify deniro was the irish assassin...i know it watch it closely.heard thru the vine. daniel is better than him now.maybe as good or better ever.my left foot.no body is better.
They are both talented men who share some similarities but quite a few differences as well. I love DeNiro at his prime. I love Day-Lewis.. and I don't think he is just an imitation of DeNiro.. What makes DDL stand out is that he can be old-wordly (Gangs) and modern (In the name of the Father)...RANGE>>>
"He gave me this you know. That was the finest beating I ever took...my face was pulp, my guts were pierced, my ribs were all busted up...when he came to finish me...I couldn't look him in the eye. He spared me because...he wanted me to live in shame...this was a great man...a great man..."...greatest monologue ever.
Actually I do disagree that Deniro couldnt place this role...honestly I think this is one of the best performances ever by DDL, but it also actually reminds me of Deniro in his younger days...the way he's speaking, even the way he looks...I could easily have seen Deniro in this role at one time...i'm not so sure about in 2001 when he turned it down because he didn't want to deal with the travel as he was already going into his mid 50s...but lets say 91ish?....easily.
He certainly has some Deniroism's. But there is something about Daniel's dramatic, almost Shakespearan flair and old-world charm that I have never seen Deniro do.....Look at the way he uses his hands sometimes or walks like a dandy...Look at the scene when the rich people come to the Five Points and he charms the young rich lady.. DDL is like a savage poet. Deniro seems thoroughly modern in contrast..
@ShannonSam1 yeah i would agree that DDL is the better actor in the sense of pure drama. know one can recreate historical or period characters like DDL ..give them life..entrance us with his interpretations..as you intimate all the nuances of a character DDL captures. Deniro is wonderful at portraying contemporary characters jimmy burke, lamotta ect. but most of those characters didn't have nearly the range in dimension or complexity that DDL gave to bill cutting. with this character cont
This is one of the greatest scenes in film ever...that just happens to take place in a film that is about a 6/10 unfortunately...even lower without Daniel Day Lewis' powerful performance...just a mess of a film...sigh.
This is my favorite scene from the movie. Bill was a warrior...people could think what they wanted of him but dude was a warrior. That's how you gotta be out here to survive. He showed weakness by not looking the man in the eye and so he cut his eye out....he said he got his heart back at that point. Real shit....Decaprio was going about things like a coward...it wasn't untill later that he went at Bill like a Man.
Only an actor of the caliber of Daniel Day-Lewis can make an actor like Leonardo Di Caprio (who I admire a lot) look inferior and on the back foot so to speak. Day-Lewis performance is haunting, aggressive, and abrasive, yet refined and accented with just the right amount of humor. This is as much of a work of art as any painting, musical composition or sculpture
@ghostwhisper666 He was great in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. I know that. Although other than that he's hasn't been as impressive as people like to think. At least in my opinion. He's been in some great movies, but his performances haven't been anything special.
@spxeli But the thing I like about DiCaprio is his that his been reliable and consistent over the years. I got into a DiCaprio move and I know it's gonna be good.
I'm surprised how he did play this over-the-top character very simply and naturally. The guy is basically supposed to be a creepster (the absurd "civilization is crumbling line" after all the horrible things he just said shows how crazy he is) but he put a lot of humanity and honesty in it, like he doubts himself despite all the bragging. I don't like Scorsese's films (too much macho bullshit IMO) but I may give this one a try based on that performance.
Macho bullshit? All of his greatest works, including the characters, are facets that you can find in just about anyone, anywhere. Martin's ability to utilize those real life elements and couple those with a compelling storyline is what makes him such a revered director.
@toophatpoyo I guess so, that's why I'm willing to give his films a second chance, I was just describing my probably prejudiced reaction to them when they're on TV and I'm just passing through and not really looking. This bit of dialogue seems to prove me wrong ^^.
This is the single best scene and single best performance of acting ever put on film in my opinion. Daniel Day Lewis is incredible. He made this movie (and pretty much any other movie he performs in...).
De Caprio is a disgrace. Suppossed to be a badass with the murderous rage.
With his weak eyes and squicky voice - "I said i' ve seen it siiir!" lol...it would normally ruin a scene completely were it not for DDL's powerful performance.
Sure there is De niro, pacino, brandon, they are legends... but you cant deny that day lewis is the greatest actor of this era,he is becoming a legend, he just needs that role that will launch him as a legend, just like "michael corleone" did for al pacino...
I love Bill's accent. It's great to hear the clear and straight NYC accent of the 19th Century. This actor did his homework. It's almost gone from the real city now.
@1992gabe Agree completely. Lewis *becomes* his character. Easily one of the best scenes of the 2000s. The accent is hard to find today, but I more often find it in the suburbs than in Manhattan for some reason. It is still around, but I don't hear it very often.
@chem100 its so hard to find becuase most of the New York state has the hip hop city accent, you won't find many people having it anymore. Everytime i travel there i hear more hip hop then new york acceents. Not that there is anything wrong with it, but thats why its hard to come by that kind of accent.
@estesoyojajaja I am saying he can play any character better then anyone else. Have you seen his methods of acting? He got Pneumonia during gangs of new york (Refused treatment) and didn't wear a warmer coat becuase the coat didn't fit the time period. During there will be blood, he didn't sleep in hotels. He used a tent and slep out in a ranch like his character. He never breaks character and refuses to be called by his real name while the movie is in making. He literally become the character.
@1992gabe I have seen his method of acting. They are kind more profesional than the one the one that some hollywoods actor use. Did he win any oscar for his role?
@estesoyojajaja this role he was screwed out of by adrian brody, he won the sag award and cannadates thought he had it locked in and somehow adrian brody got the oscar. I think they wanted him to be the youngest oscar winniner so that gave him an advantage but who am i to say? But he is a two time oscar winner. He won an oscar on one of his first leading roles. He has won over 72 awards in under 20 movies and two oscars. The only problem is gettin him to do a movie, he is kinda pickey.
@mowriter I watched it after he won the oscar, just to see if he did do better then lewis. I mean when he won the oscar i was thinking, " How in the hell do you do better then bill the butcher"?. So i watched it and sadly noticed that it was no where near lewis's performance. I mean that whole oscar decision had to do with something other then acting, Adrian brody's fans were probably dissapointed that he won.
Its amazing how much respect bill had for priest, considering the fact that he killed him. I also found the relationship between bill and amsterdam somewhat sad because bill apparently had a lot of love for him but he simply wanted bill dead.
@apocalypse123 watch most of his other work. especially the classics. in films like raging bull and goodfellas, all the elements come together- story, writing, acting, everything. this film has several problems, but daniel day lewis's performance makes it a worthwhile film.
@cocaobean I've seen Raging Bull and Goodfellas, but you can't compare those stories to this one. The writing is nothing short of extraordinary, as is the acting, and the story really comes together in the end. I think you're just comparing apples to oranges, Goodfellas is a whole different genre and style altogether. Same with Raging Bull. Scorcese really demonstrated his versatility with this film in my opinion.
@apocalypse123 i am not comparing them in terms of genre. all 3 of those films are in separate genres. i'm comparing them in terms of a particular director's body of work. in comparison to those films, i think this one is weaker. me saying so doesn't make it fact, it's just my opinion.
@cocaobean Everyone has their own opinion I suppose. Nonetheless I still think Scorcese has failed to let me down and this is most certainly a masterpiece by one of the greatest director's of our time.
It amazes me that Director Steven Spielberg has cast actor Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln in his upcoming movie due in theaters in 2013.Another job that should have gone to an american actor gets outsourced to a foreigner. When will this madness of american jobs going to foreigners ever end?
Shut-up, dude. The production crew for that Denzel Washington runaway train movie was in my town last year, and lots of us got a little piece of the action. Think of all of the jobs for Americans produced from a film project involving Daniel Day Lewis and Steven Spielberg! Hollywood ain't just actors you see in magazines, my friend. It's technicians, artists..people from every field. Local hotels, restaurants and businesses, and even Pennsylvania railroads also shared in the benefits!
despite all of the intense action and dramatic scenes, this is above and beyond the best scene in the movie.. thumbs up if we need more bill the butchers
@halfstarmusic Daniel Day-Lewis is too good and obscur to play a commercial villain like the batman. He doesn't want to be in commercial fucked up movies like marvels and shit like this, leave him alone in his undeground roles, where cinema is still an art.
@Cataclysm31 i thought he was a english man.... why elce would he hate the irish foriegners so much, also, the english had a chance to get 2 america before the irish did
I love Bill's philosophy in this soliloquy..."fear preserves the order of things"...it's funny Bill hated the Irish but he had real affection for Priest Vallon and his son...and usually he'd waste someone for giving him a hard time but when Amsterdam does it in this scene he thinks it's cool...Priest Vallon spared Bill and then Bill rose up to kill him in a gang fight and then Bill spared Amsterdam and Amsterdam rose up to kill HIM in a gang fight....
@VeryHappyUniverse why thank you LOL a lot of the relationships in this movie change during the course of the movie...the back-and-forth with Jenny...first he liked her she was this hott chick who blew him off then she pickpocketed him then he caught up with her and got his medallion back and wanted to pal in with her and she kicked him to the curb then she chose him at the dance then LOL they fought some more then wound up f***ing and wound up going to S.F. together and the end of the movie
William Poole AKA Bill The Butcher ! Daniel Day could act his way outta a bag tied shut and covered in cement with a boulder on top of it this guy is the reason I love this movie ;)
This is my favourite scene in the whole film. Daniel Day Lewis' performance as Bill the butcher just couldn't be better! No wonder why he was nominated for an oscar that year.
@TheEchechech yeah considering hollywood is 80% jew what did you expect . it was a shame that this epic performance by DDL had to take a back seat to that non descript little jew -boy.10 years ago liberal fags would be yelling anti-semite for saying that but today its just keepin real hommie.LOL
Just so happens, that the man playing this role is a liberal, half-Jew (who has played homosexuals). Ease off the hateful rhetoric. I think DDL should have won, too, but the truth is that Jack and DDL split the vote which led to Brody's win. Yes, there are a lot of Jews in HOllywood, but there have been several holocaust movies that didn't get Oscar attention---The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas--being one of them. Besides, the Pianist is a good movie and Brody was solid..

estesoyojajaja 10 months ago
@estesoyojajaja I am saying he can play any character better then anyone else. Have you seen his methods of acting? He got Pneumonia during gangs of new york (Refused treatment) and didn't wear a warmer coat becuase the coat didn't fit the time period. During there will be blood, he didn't sleep in hotels. He used a tent and slep out in a ranch like his character. He never breaks character and refuses to be called by his real name while the movie is in making. He literally become the character.
1992gabe 10 months ago
@1992gabe I have seen his method of acting. They are kind more profesional than the one the one that some hollywoods actor use. Did he win any oscar for his role?
estesoyojajaja 10 months ago
@estesoyojajaja this role he was screwed out of by adrian brody, he won the sag award and cannadates thought he had it locked in and somehow adrian brody got the oscar. I think they wanted him to be the youngest oscar winniner so that gave him an advantage but who am i to say? But he is a two time oscar winner. He won an oscar on one of his first leading roles. He has won over 72 awards in under 20 movies and two oscars. The only problem is gettin him to do a movie, he is kinda pickey.
1992gabe 10 months ago
@1992gabe Hell whit that guy i do not even know.

@1992gabe L and who the hell actually watched "The Piano," except the academy judges?
mowriter 10 months ago
@mowriter I watched it after he won the oscar, just to see if he did do better then lewis. I mean when he won the oscar i was thinking, " How in the hell do you do better then bill the butcher"?. So i watched it and sadly noticed that it was no where near lewis's performance. I mean that whole oscar decision had to do with something other then acting, Adrian brody's fans were probably dissapointed that he won.

Its amazing how much respect bill had for priest, considering the fact that he killed him. I also found the relationship between bill and amsterdam somewhat sad because bill apparently had a lot of love for him but he simply wanted bill dead.

i personally think this is one of Scorcese's weaker films. Having said that, it's worth seeing just for Daniel Day Lewis's performance. Fantastic.
cocaobean 1 year ago 19
@cocaobean loved that movie.no way it's weak
metallaz 8 months ago
@metallaz it's all relative. in my opinion, compared to most of scorcese's other movies, it is not up to par.
cocaobean 8 months ago 2
@cocaobean How do you figure this is one of Scorcese's weaker films?
apocalypse123 8 months ago
@apocalypse123 watch most of his other work. especially the classics. in films like raging bull and goodfellas, all the elements come together- story, writing, acting, everything. this film has several problems, but daniel day lewis's performance makes it a worthwhile film.
cocaobean 8 months ago
@cocaobean I've seen Raging Bull and Goodfellas, but you can't compare those stories to this one. The writing is nothing short of extraordinary, as is the acting, and the story really comes together in the end. I think you're just comparing apples to oranges, Goodfellas is a whole different genre and style altogether. Same with Raging Bull. Scorcese really demonstrated his versatility with this film in my opinion.
apocalypse123 8 months ago
@apocalypse123 i am not comparing them in terms of genre. all 3 of those films are in separate genres. i'm comparing them in terms of a particular director's body of work. in comparison to those films, i think this one is weaker. me saying so doesn't make it fact, it's just my opinion.
cocaobean 8 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@cocaobean Neither of you can even spell Scorsese.
niloh96 7 months ago
@cocaobean Everyone has their own opinion I suppose. Nonetheless I still think Scorcese has failed to let me down and this is most certainly a masterpiece by one of the greatest director's of our time.

@apocalypse123 with an actor like Daniel Day Lewis, it's impossible to go wrong.

WhiteArmy1918 1 year ago
Shut-up, dude. The production crew for that Denzel Washington runaway train movie was in my town last year, and lots of us got a little piece of the action. Think of all of the jobs for Americans produced from a film project involving Daniel Day Lewis and Steven Spielberg! Hollywood ain't just actors you see in magazines, my friend. It's technicians, artists..people from every field. Local hotels, restaurants and businesses, and even Pennsylvania railroads also shared in the benefits!

@halfstarmusic Daniel Day-Lewis is too good and obscur to play a commercial villain like the batman. He doesn't want to be in commercial fucked up movies like marvels and shit like this, leave him alone in his undeground roles, where cinema is still an art.

@XxowendanxX Wow, I never bloody realised that! And plus, that's a good brief summary of the movie.
VeryHappyUniverse 1 year ago
@VeryHappyUniverse why thank you LOL a lot of the relationships in this movie change during the course of the movie...the back-and-forth with Jenny...first he liked her she was this hott chick who blew him off then she pickpocketed him then he caught up with her and got his medallion back and wanted to pal in with her and she kicked him to the curb then she chose him at the dance then LOL they fought some more then wound up f***ing and wound up going to S.F. together and the end of the movie

And it will always be a wonder as to how he lost out to Adrien Brody.
toophatpoyo 1 year ago
@toophatpoyo actually not a wonder at all.... brody won because he played a jew in the holocaust.
TheEchechech 1 year ago
@TheEchechech yeah considering hollywood is 80% jew what did you expect . it was a shame that this epic performance by DDL had to take a back seat to that non descript little jew -boy.10 years ago liberal fags would be yelling anti-semite for saying that but today its just keepin real hommie.LOL
1986billyk 1 year ago
@1986billyk
