Im mexican and as a mexican child it really depends on who is doing the diciplining.

Mom = "the chankla" or flip flop, comes off and you get the beat down

dad = heavy leather workbelt or made to pick a branch off a tree to get beat with.

in public = a very discreet and excrutiatingly painful pinch and twist combo usually performed under a table or perhaps pretending to hug you as not to alert other parents who might call it abuse.

I'm half Mexican-half Chinese, My Mom used to hit me with clothes hangers until she accidently grabbed a wooden one and broke it on the back of my legs. It was kinda cheap though, but after that it was all about bare knuckles to the breadbasket.

Also just to emphasis, my Mom is still to this day a woman that can intimidate sailors.
