can you recommend a good organic/natural recovery drink to buy? I want to buy one of these powder formulas but I want it to be all organic or atleast mostly
Hello great videos. Just bought the p90x pull up bar, which is hard to get hold of in the UK. I bought natural whey from Reflex which has no nasty sweeteners or fillers in it. My p90x workout has arrived in the post so i have no more excuses.
Hello, Your Videos are great. I bought the p90x pull up bar, which is hard to get hold of in the UK. I have just bought protein whey from Reflex. The natural one has no sweeteners or fillers in. And my p90x workout has just arrived in the post. So i have no more excuses lol.
That means if you weight 200 pounds you need 50 grams of protein before and after your workout : \. I have trouble finding 100 grams of protein in an entire DAY. I'm a lady on a diet 1400 calorie diet though :) I'm interested in gaining some muscle which is why I watched this. It sounds confusing to me though.
@rockygecko stay away from soy supplements if youre a man bro, it will bring down your testosterone levels that you will have a hard time getting it up, and forget about muscle growth
I'd really like to stock up on the P90X drink. Are there any vendors out there who are selling it for less than 43 bucks? It's kinda steep for a mere 30 day supply. Especially in this economy. Thanks.
If you can, you should look into a guy named Alan Aragon. He has degrees in nutrition and really knows his stuff. The 0.25 and 0.5 ratio you got was right, but I think you mixed up the pre and post workout amounts. I think pre is 0.25 carb and 0.25 protein, and I think post is 0.5 carb and 0.25 protein. Check out bodybuilding (dot) com and search the forums for posts from Alan Aragon with the terms pre and post workout.
Don't read too many of the actual articles on that site though. Most people are trying to sell you a product so you have to take that into consideration. But Alan Aragon (who has wrote for Men's Health magazine) isn't trying to sell you any product. He uses scientific studies to prove his points rather than "bro-science" lol.
Try looking into Chocolate Milk as your alternative recovery drink. There are scientifical studies in that seem to indicate that the macronutrient ratio of good ol' chockie-moo-moo is perfect for post workout recovery *AND* only costs about 1/3 the price of the powdered recovery drinks.
Just google for "Chocolate Milk Recovery" and you'll find plenty of info on it.
@ alexchesser. Yes, chocolate milk is good as a recovery drink but not if your goal is to lose weight/fat, I was told by my trainer that "Chocolate Milk Recovery" is better for gainers & bulkers but not the people trying to shred the fat. Too bad, cause i love Chocolate Milk!
Look up Paul chek post workout.. Now He is a Genious.. Depending on your metabolic type is what you must eat..
How do People on the north pole eat? and how does people in japan eat?? One is higher carb, low fat low protein.. and others Primarily eat protein rich of omega 3 and hardly any carbs. on both ends.. everything is all natural or Clean, ive seen results with my Metabolic typing pre and post MEALS whole meals all natural (lots of veggies meat coconut and either potato, or oats)
If you workout in the morning, your body WILL use your stored body fat as fuel. You need an adequate amount of carbs and protein after your workout to take advantage of the short time frame when the body is in need of carbs and protein to begin it recovery. There is a reason why there are no before and after pics of this guy. He obviously pressed STOP on his DVD player.
Just thought i would also note, i really like your videos, its great that you have lots of tips, for all those who are not sure what to expect, or to help things run smoother. they are really helpful.
The purpose of carbs post workout is for glycogen recovery, So you actually want to be consuming simple carbs, not complex carbs, as a recovery drink.
You can look up the reasons for wanting to speed up glycogen recovery, but for me i want to do it asap. so i don't start breaking down muscle. but it might be different for you.
All good points. May also depend on your goals and what workout you are doing. I was just enjoying some P90X Recovery Formula when I came across this. I tend to cycle it with Accelerade for recovery. I like the 4:1 ratio there. However, your raise some good points. In addition, I'm more of an endurance athlete so I tend to fire through carbs pretty efficiently. Tonight was an hour and a half on the bike trainer watching the Tour. 1,442 calories burned. So I guess I earned it.
The key to the recovery drinks is the 4:1 Ratio of Carbs to Protein in the hour following intense workout. High Protein isn't what your body is needing to replenish. LOOK for the ratio...there is a science behind this.
It's not very expensive either. The Gatorade is actually the most expensive item. I also drink 1 cup of milk with a scoop of whey isolate powder within 15 minutes after the drink. Some people boast predigested amino acids as well, but I think if you stick to eating whole foods you can steer clear of those. And yes Gatorade is high in sugar, but fructose replenishes liver glycogen stores.
Any bodybuilder (me included), will tell you that you do indeed require carbohydrates in a recovery drink. The whole idea of "recovery", is to recover the glycogen that was depleated during heavy excercise. You need these carbs to raise your insulin level to transport glycogen through the blood and into muscles and liver where it's needed.
Stay away from gatorade, it has sucrose and fructose and therefore does not absorb quick enough. Buy some simple detrose from a wine store. Its best!!!!
Nice response. I think I'm gonna stick to the p90 stuff since I wouldn't want to use it as a protein drink and adding a bagel to the isopure, if I use it as a post-workout drink, raises the cost.
I keep hearing good things about "Dark Matter" Post-Workout Recovery Drink. All the reviewers say it totally prevents muscle soreness. Going to buy it tomorow
I think Protein is the key, with some Glutamine to repair your muscles. Especially, with P90x your muscles are always soar, which is a very good thing.
I just buy GNC PRotein Powder Strawberry/Banna and the GNC Glutamine. I mix it with a cup of apple juice and I add a mix of frozen fruit. Grind it in the blender. It tastes delicous, I look forward to drinking it, which was not the case before I did this. I take 1 shake after my workouts and 1 in the morning with breakfast.
The recovery drink from P90X is a mix of stuff not just protein I don't know whats in it. I am sure its a good product, but is it worth it?
I think its cheaper and effective just have a Protein shake and L-Glutamine. You can buy GNC stuff 6lb box full which keeps cost down and L-Glutamine last a long time. GNC often has buy one get the 2nd for 50 percent off which brings the cost down more. Plus, you don't have to pay for shipping.
Almost forgot, its called the Berry Banna Blast not Strawberry/Banna. Try my combo !Its worth the effort and I totally look forward to it. Which I never did with just straight protein shakes or any other combo of things I tried before.
Goodluck on P90X is an awesome workout thou totally kicks your butt!!! Yesterday was playing some Extreme Frisbie with some buddies and was the only one not sucking wind.
On my 2nd round week 7 still pushing play and loving it!!!
New study shows that low fat chocolate milk say Dean 1% chocolate milk is in fact a great post workout recovery drink. According the studies I have read it gives you every thing you would find in most high end mixes you are likely to find in you heath food stores.
If one is doing the P90X, a low carb diet is not a good idea.. I experienced this yesterday as I was bonking on PLYO. I now eat more bread and or rice with my vegie and meat(never fried, always baked). P90X is a different diet approach .. I don't think one will survive if you do a low carb diet and doing P90X.
no in fact i think they fo tell u in one of the guides that its not supposed to be a low carb workout/nutrition routine because ur body needs those carbs for the intensity
Yeah thats right Seth - I live in a country area in Australia and we have lots of animals running around.you see, the reason most of the western world is fat is because we dont expand any energy getting our food unlike the past.THe struggle between man and beast is alive and well in the valley I live in.I disturbed a family of kangaroos 3 months ago just before christmas,as I was trying to catch one of the joeys for dinner and the large male took me on. It was invigourating and makes me a man
IMO that P90X recovery drink is a scam. You can get way more vitamins and minerals out of a multivitamin than that drink which is really just a sugar drink with vitamins in it and some protein.
I know this vid is almost a year old but I have to thank you a lot for this.. I've started working out and the math you use is a joke and so easy to calculate.. thanks man.
I just started P90X and i am taking Mega Men Sport supplements daily...i got them at GNC. Of course i am still sore...will the drink help? Can i take the supplements AND the drink?
just take the vitamins, the vitamins have way more nutrients in them than that drink. All the drink really is is a sugar drink with some vitamins and some protein. It's a scam.
To meet these requirments very economically you could try mixing a protein powder into fruit juice. Protein alone is not nearly as effective as protein with carbohydrate. One cup of apple juice contains 31 grams of carbohydrate, a cup of cranberry cocktail 40 grams, and a cup of orange juice 27 grams.
The ideal protein is a protein hydrosylate, such as whey hydrosylate. The protein should also contain all of the essential amino acids, and in particular leucine. The drink should contain twice as much carbohydrate as protein, calculated at a rate of at least 0.9 grams of carbohydrate and 0.5 grams of protein for every kilogram of your body's weight.. For example,A 170 pound swimmer weighs 77 kilograms and would require 62 grams of carbohydrate and 31 grams of protein.
Post-exercise nutrition can improve the quality and the rate of recovery after about of serious exercise, such as a one hour P90X workout, swimming practice, a weight training session, or a longer run. Signs of poor recovery include fatigue, poor workouts, prolonged muscle soreness, lack of increased strength, and lack of increased muscle mass. Research has shown that nutrition ingested right after working out, and up to two hours later can drastically improve ones recovery time.
I just don't like those "recovery drinks". 80% of the carbonhydrates are pure sugar. I either prefer to eat a good breakfast with lots of whole grain bread and German "Harzer" cheese. There's a lot of good protein in there, and it's not that expensive as those drinks.
Hi, I just started P90X and I was wondering what kind of drink I can substitute for the P90X recovery drink. I know you talked about this in a previous video, but the problem is that I can't buy this kind of stuff for various reasons (#1-mom won't let me :( , #2- not enough money of my own.) I noticed that you mentioned gatorade. Would that be close enough? What about whey protein powder?
Gatoraid is essentially water, sugar, and electrolytes to replace sweat. It does not have protein or amino acids for muscle recovery. Read your labels.
You've got great tips and I enjoy the information you've so kindly shared with the world. However, where are your pictures and/or stats showing your progress?
Hey nice video, it was really helpful! Thanks! The p90x does a really good job with covering nutrition and recovery, but it doesn't really specify how much SLEEP we need to have every night...and if it needs to be at a consistent time...if anyone knows please respond!
they do address this - it is the reason i had to stop the program (my job doesn't allow me to sleep much) - i seem to remember them saying 7-8 hours? at least --- i think. it's a lot for your body - you need a lot of sleep.
Your metabolism will slow without sufficient sleep, it is as important as exercise. I'd suggest at least 6-8 hours of sleep, but everybody is different. Children and teens need up to ten hours.
Glad to know it's helping out. As you discover new things share it with the rest of us. Those early weeks are when you are learning the most. Pay it forward!
Sorry I wasn't clear, multiply your weight by .25 (25%) or .50 (50%). In your case Pre-Workout thats 35g of protein, and 70g of carbs. Post-workout its 35g of both protein and carbs.
200 calories of carbs and 100 calories before THEN 100/100 after? Is that right? That's 500 calories. I'm close to 140 so if I round to 150 that would be 750 calories just for fueling and recovering from the workout. Seems excessive.
Same here. Not trying to discredit you in any way. There's nothing wrong with low/no-carb protein supplements (I use them myself) for the same reason you suggested -- it give you versatility. However, my point in my response to your original video is that without carbs taken with the protein, I would hesitate to call it a "recovery" drink, per se.

Please take no offense on my previous comment. I'm no nutritionist myself --just sharing information. Keep pressing play!

Hey Brown no offense taken. Just wanted to be as concise as possible. All comments are welcome with open arms by me.
