Just wondering... How do you feel about your parents not teaching you Chinese? It seems that people are unaware of how "sponge-like" children are. They can learn and adapt to so much at an early age. I feel a loss from my parents refusal to teach us their native language. With them, I feel like it might have been a sense of shame and a desire to make sure we were fully "Americanized". I wonder how many black caribbeans have Chinese blood. Both of my parents are of caribbean descent and both have a lot of asian blood. I understood the Indian blood because they have ancestry in TnT and Guyana, but both have much Chinese blood as well, which still makes me think because I didn't know that there was enough Chinese in west indies to make that kind of impact (genetically). In Jamaica, the newly arrived Chinese look physically different. The Jamaican Chinese tends to be taller with a more appealing body shape. And the Jamaican Chinese girls are drop dead gorgeous where as the newly arrived Chinese, from China are not.

My family is (African/Hakka) Jamaicans, which is common, and my family who happen to be full Hakka do not see themselves as Hans. In Jamaica we have the recent arrivals from China who are clearly Han and they neither look nor act like the Hakka Jamaican. In anthropological terms they might be classified as a single grouping but not in real life, especially in Jamaica.

Chinese in Kowloon, mainly the New Territories were mainly Hakka Chinese who also speak a 'bush' dialect alongside the native Cantonese language. The Hakka Chinese were the ones who often migrated to different parts of the world like Brazil, UK and USA. I had family in the Caribbean Islands like Jamaica, Trinidad and Guyana as well as Brazil who set up businesses.

I wonder how many black caribbeans have Chinese blood. Both of my parents are of caribbean descent and both have a lot of asian blood. I understood the Indian blood because they have ancestry in TnT and Guyana, but both have much Chinese blood as well, which still makes me think because I didn't know that there was enough Chinese in west indies to make that kind of impact (genetically). Is it that many/most caribbeans have Chinese blood or is it just coincidence w/ my parents?

@custno08 Not according to my family. They definitely do not see themselves as Han. And I do agree, most in Jamaica are mixed with African but many are not. In Jamaica, the newly arrived Chinese look physically different. The Jamaican Chinese tends to be taller with a more appealing body shape. And the Jamaican Chinese girls are drop dead gorgeous where as the newly arrived Chinese, from China are not.

My family is (African/Hakka) Jamaicans, which is common, and my family who happen to be full Hakka do not see themselves as Hans. In Jamaica we have the recent arrivals from China who are clearly Han and they neither look nor act like the Hakka Jamaican. In anthropological terms they might be classified as a single grouping but not in real life, especially in Jamaica.

@kwacou Actually Hakka is part of han group...and u can't really tell who is really hakka just by looks. If you go to Taiwan/Malaysia/HK..hakka is like third largest Han group and you can't tell the differences. the reason some hakka looks more thai like its because some moved to south east Asia. Weather , lifestyle and food will change people's appearance. if you ever lived in east asia..u will see hakka just looks like regular chinese.

Chinese in Kowloon, mainly the New Territories were mainly Hakka Chinese who also speak a 'bush' dialect alongside the native Cantonese language. The Hakka Chinese were the ones who often migrated to different parts of the world like Brazil, UK and USA. I had family in the Caribbean Islands like Jamaica, Trinidad and Guyana as well as Brazil who set up businesses.
