I love this show but does anyone else think that Eric Glass really mumbles? It is hard to understand what he is saying sometimes. It gets under my skin
why would somone mark capburger's comment as SPAM?? i love "this american life" but i can still find that comment hilarious.... c'mon npr crowd, learn to laugh at yourselves.
I like your "cool jazz beat and the cherubic monotone of Mr. Glass" Nice line. It has a nice pop-art, fake erudition vibe. Kind of like it's a rip-off of somebody though, which I'm sure you mean as the sincerest form of flattery.
Visually, this is sort of stylized, and maybe a little derivative of Errol Morris but they find great stories. Great stories are better than style, better than erudition.
you fruitcake. Today was the first time i've listened to this mans show after months of selfless advertisements, plugs, and congratulations. my first episode, and i'm hooked. for the first time, i think that people will get to hear the truth. he was right, he's doing something no one else is doing. Being HONEST. people are people, with many sides, and occasionally when you show real people talking, they might tell the truth...
No, dude. This American Life is practically the only thing good on Showtime. I've never seen such an enormous collection of obscure films in my life that I was paying for! About the only other good thing on this ding-bat cable channel was the tantamount s of soft-core porn! Just get the DVD's. They are worth every penny, man.
Hi Ira, I am usually saddened when anyone from the NPR waves moves into television or movies, but your trailer looks really nicely shot and retains the poetics, quirkiness & bareness of your radio show. Cheers mate!
-Hunter, the traveling cinema-by-bicycle guy, remember me?
I am a truckdriver for another month. the show has just ended and I did not get to see it. It is possibly the saddest moment of my life. I'm watching HBO, I drove 100 miles out of my way to get to a place that I could get cable for the night and they did not have HBO. I will catch it OnDemand later this week... no matter what. Ira Glass truly will save the world.
Okay, I can't link to it, because youtube doesn't let me, but go to showtime's website (just google for showtime and you'll see it) click on This American Life, click Episodes, click Episode One, and then "Watch the full episode".
Although now I see it might only be the first episode in full. And parts of the other episodes.
Sorry, I really thought they were putting up every episode in full there, looks like I was wrong.
Wow, this looks amazing, especially the Soup Nazi-style chef, who made me clap out loud, just off this trailer clip. You could tell Ira Glass was inspired by some of those poetic CBS's Sunday Morning reports and Errol Morris, oh for sure! But This American Life seems more modern, irreverent and visually arresting than a typical, family-friendly Sunday Morning profile (which is where Errol's influence comes in).
I'm sure this series will live up to all the Metacritic (dot) com hype.
this is a true thing that happens!its not a chain letter!its kinda scary at first but it really works!!paste this message into 3 comments and press ALT F4 and your crushes name will appear on the screen!!!its soo weird
At a time when even the supposedly "educational" TV shows like those on Discovery or History have given over to the popular demands for edginess and fast pace, it's amazing to see something like this that actually connects people and examines the human situation.
I must be the only person who thinks that every single episode of TAL is depressing and sad... I can't bear to listen to the radio show anymore, so no chance am I going to bother watching it on a screen.
No, you are not the only one! It is Ira Glass' voice. I love the radio show, but the whole thing hits a "sad" button in my head. I don't mean I dislike his voice, and I love the content. It is like that woman who used to have epileptic seizures when she heard Mary Hart's voice on Entertainment Tonight...it is physiological. I'm not sure I can stay away from the Television show. It seems really great.

Wow! American's look SO much more interesting when set to a cool jazz beat and the cherubic monotone of Mr. Glass!
This is desultory pop-art media vanity in the guise of erudition.

great! it's gonna be on showtime where only a minute percentage of the actual American populace can watch it.
i, for one, love TAL, but ain't gonna pay $70 bucks a month for the pleasure. love this american life, hate the cable industry.
why isn't this on PBS?
