@treatmentbound.... it was Oct 13th, 1980.. the show was the day before my 17th birthday. It is still the concert by which I judge every other concert I've ever seen..... it was beyond great, and probably why I have a man crush on him to this day.
When I was 18 - I had virtually nothing - no home - sick single mother - just a summer union job and a track scholarship to school and lots of hope and promise. Oh, and I had a guy like Springsteen creating music as if he was singing to me.Running 10 miles each night after the union gig, you better darn well believe I wanted the redemption to which this song speaks.30 years on, I guess I have both redemption and a lot material comforts, but the promised lies back when I had nothing but a dream.
@gatsby999888 I was under the impression that Bruce fans all had class. You are either the exception to that rule, or not a Bruce fan. You are obviously a tool.
Paul i missed you - missed you being 30, 40 and 50, miss you tonight, but I'll never forget you and me seeing Bruce in 1981 and holding each other like we would never let go. Not found anything to come even close to what we had all these years later. x
this song just makes me wanna cry, but not of sadness it makes me wanna cry... in a good way by remembering a very beautiful moment im my liife.... :3
I remember this tour, I saw it at the St. Paul Civic Center. My mom stood in line to get me tickets for my 17th birthday. My mom died away two years later.. It will always stand as one of the greatest nights ever. I'm almost 48 now, and this video just made me feel just about every emotion... joy, pain, sadness, love, and the list is endless... thanks mom, and thanks Bruce for a memory that still resonates almost 31 years later
@srshores I saw that same show in St. Paul. I think it was around Nov. 10 (don't have my ticket stub anymore), but I think "The River" was released that same day. Please verify the exact date if you can.
Can't say I've ever raced a car, I drive like a grandmother. But I'm from New Jersey (in New England now); and I have a boring life up here, getting older.
My game is poker, and I'm taking a trip down the Garden State Parkway to hit the all-night long card games like I used to for a couple weeks. Not the smartest thing for me to do, but I just have to.
Maybe a weak analogy, but for me it fits ---- this is my song, my motivation. Some guys just give up living ---- don't let it happen to you!
I'm gonna shoot you guys straight: that was just to get your attention, and I'm copying and pasting this wherever the hell I can. Coming back to Bruce springsteen after a couple of years of heavy metal and techno going on repeat on the stereo, i realize why he's called the boss... People say he's the closest thing we've ever come to a new bob dylan, i say he's everything bob dylan was and so much more
@Permuh You are exactly right. So MUCH MORE THAN DYLAN. Springsteen is Rembrandt. Dylan is Picasso. Springsteen has written for the ages, not the moment.
@draygnol Well said. This song still stands strong for all the motorheads across this great country.Class of 86 here and I still believe in the performance aftermarket for the AMERICAN v-8's.Somehow industry has to survive in this country such as EDELBROCK,COMP CAMS,COMPETITION ENGINEERING,ETC.
Ya ever notice that "classic rock radio" plays the Other BS--Bob Seger--100 times more often than The Boss? Why the hell is that when Springsteen is at least A Thousand Times more talented than Seger (or anyone else for that matter)!

@skip328 Well put....and the older I get, the more his stuff makes sense to me...when I was 11 and Born in the USA came out, I loved it, wore out the tape...and I remember rock radio played the crap out of his old stuff, the b sides, you name it. And I loved it all...but now at nearly 40, his songs take on a whole new level of meaning for me...
Bruce is the best, never actually seen anyone care about every line, word, verse, chorus, just generally each bit of the song, as much as bruce does. Then he transfers in into live performance and puts his heart into every night. There'll never be another bruce. My favourite lyric has to be "tonight my baby and me we're gunna ride to the sea, and wash these sins off our hands". Bruce, you are my god.
Outta highschool late 80's rode in old friend/" "coworkers 71 Roadrunner GTX,383,4-speed after helping him change out rear gears=night test drive.Being asked, went with him/his wife/girlfriend at the time to Englishtown,NJ to a swap meet/carshow.ACRES of parts and a really good car show.Rte 9 Poughkeepsie had some good parking lot meets with the occasional squirrel/turd trying to ruin it.A ratty/rusty 4-banger mustang TRYING to do burnouts, make noise, etc comes to mind at that time.
I used to listen to this with my dad. Bruce's music opens my eyes and connects me with the people who are most important to me. A living legend. Life is short - see him before you die.

Best concert I've ever been to was seeing Bruce and the band last year. They played for just about 3 hours, including the Born To run album in it's entirety. I'm 20 years old, and enjoy lots of newer music. But Bruce has that authenticity about him, which is harder to find these days.
@glsgw2k9 never too late to go back to the beginning and listen to it all - you will be glad you did - it's all on here somewhere mostly from beginning to current - don't miss out.
In my lifetime their have been few with close to his songwriting and performing abilities fewer still who's art transcends generations and who haven't allowed fame and fortune to distance them from their audience or their humanity. I'm a fan and growing some killer sideburns in tribute.
i'm 26 and actually just discovered bruces music.... I knew him and knew some of his famous songs.... but never really 'listened' to it... till i heard 'The River' ... i can't stop listening to it now....
@rmeofiowa I'm 49 and my first show was on that tour, in Greensboro NC. And like you, it was a life changing experience. As well as hearing Darkness for the first time. The news of the Darkness boxed set coming has me really stoked...
darkness is prolly one of his best albums, its filled with songs like this that just go straight to the heart... i really hope to see bruce one day that woould be the best expirience ever. His voice here just gets to me its sooo beautiful!!!
After reading some of the comments on here people speaking up say "hey I'm 15,18,19 ect... I'm thrilled beyond reason that there is some hope in todays youth that these youngsters have taste.
it is incredibly inspiring to hear teenagers of 2010 really feeling the music! It is great to know that there is some hope for the youth of this country to REALLY FEEL the emotions expressed with an artist of this caliber. Well Done!
They did the whole Darkness on the Edge of Town playlist at Giants Stadium last fall. I felt 30 years younger. Bruce was just Bruce...he is timeless...the voice of any generation.
I'm 15, and this man is the sound of my childhood - disc 2 of Live 75-85 was the only CD I listened to (with the exception of S Club 7 xDD) and all these songs make me cry every time I hear them, they got me through my parents split & some messy times, and he played some of them in Dublin last year when I saw him & I cried at all of the songs, some I'd forgotten, but remembered within the first few notes.
I hope can thank him one day for all the inspiration he has given me in my life xxxxxx
Yah man I know how you feel. Although i've never seen Bruce Springsteen live he is a huge inspiration in my life helping me get through rough times during my parent's split and other troubles. My dad introduced me to Bruce's music when I was 5 and I'm 16 now. When I listen to his music it's like it takes me to a whole different world where I think about life and other things. That's what I love about Bruce's music, they're very meaningful.
@roqueandrolle ive been thru the some of the same things...and bruce has been the same relieving power for me. glad im not the only one who has felt this way and had these experiences
Inspiration, that's what it's all about! I'm amazed Springsteen is still doing for people after all this time. He did the same sort of thing for me when I was 15 too, that was 3 decades ago... I remember buying Live 75-85 when it came out lol I had to make sure I had enough money to get it. I'd like to thank Bruce too...
@roqueandrolle I'm 32 and he did the same for me got me though my mum and dad's split and I hope I can to some day the lyrics are brilliant so profound
J'Ai bientot 42 ans et bientot 30 ans au sel Ca Québec le patron me convient ... C'Est Le Seul artiste Qui me convient Avec Toujours Autant d ' émotion! aspect musical CE UNIQUEMENT L n'est Pas , Qui C'Est mon coeur l ' entend Toujours Avec Autant d ' émotion qu'à 15 ans et j'estime AVOIR pourtant évoluer !
Really hard to comment on this one. I grew up in NY and Bruce was part of my soundtrack growing up. However, I didn't get into him back then. I was into KISS and metal, but I knew his music. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I saw a concert of his on TV and I finally listened to the words. My musical life changed. Welcome to the club. Disc 1 is pretty good also.
@roqueandrolle Man I'm 24 I feel the exact same.. music keeps ya young!! U sound like you're from the North Side of Dublin anywho!! I hope ya are!! That gig at the RDS last year was epic!
I started listening to Bruce when I was 15 also; it was 1977. He still brings a tear to my eye and a smile to my soul. Bruce has made this world a much better place for all of us- a real land of hope and dreams.
@roqueandrolle I was 15 when I started to like Springsteen's songs in 1985. The first album I got was the Live 75-85 box. Still my favourite and also the Dublin Live DVD.
This song always reminds me of times in Philly over on Front street sititng on the side watching the races. The cops would open the hydrants and flood the street after 11 and then we'd head to JFK Stadium for the "car show."
my brother and I had so many memories around Bruce's music. I cried the other day listening to Jungleland and had to realize again that I'll never hear my sweet brother sing a Bruce song again. :( But tonight I found this vid and remembered that Koko was at this show...and if I listen hard enough I can hear him singing along! Cried all the way through. I mss you forever Koko! thanks to whoever posted this vid. You made my day.
The first song my brother's made me listen. I was 14 years old. I bought "born to run". Then went "the river" and... I still remember. Was and still great. fayçal
from nothing you can become a strong guy! it's the life of this guy;Bruce is a talent songwritter , one of the most famous of all the time and a honest guy!that's why we respect him and love him!
Click on Kimock7 to watch a great cover of Racing In The Street. Enjoy! Big thanks to Bruce and E Street for staying on the road, touring and recording such fantastic news songs like Living On A Dream! Don't stop touring, Bruce!
maybe that's because wal mart isn't interested in giving you a multi million dollar deal.
bruce isn't a working class guy. he is a millionaire. he has since apologized for the wal mart incident. i wouldn't expect him to be something that he is not.
He is the most sensible singer/songwriter around today or have you been blinded by all the crap they try an ram down are throats each and every day! But I guess they got you eh man, I mean with a name like "smackdaddy" yep your bad go listen to Britney she needs you.
bruce has got it going on. sexiest man on earth from head to toe! One of the highlights of my life was seeing him in concert He gives you what you want and more
This song is the best, Listened to it back in 82, driving to Van Nuys Blvd, the Mecca of hot rodding, at the time I had a 70 Cuda... Ive heard this about a million times, Truth to this song is this, some of us, never get over it, you always hear guys my age, going yea I did it way back when, but I NEED to do it TODAY, its in your blood, or it aint. Simple as That
I'm 17 years old and working on restoring a '68 Runner I bought... 4-speed, and it's gonna have a sick, high-revving 383- at least that's the plan. Don't plan on doing too much street racing though lol GO MOPAR. Long live BRUCE.
I might race in a tuner car, but i still have muscle blood in me.. and this song gets me everytime. I wasn't alive when it came out (or even when this video was recorded!), and i generally don't listen to older music.. But this song has had a spot on my ipod for years. It gets me through the winter, until car show season starts back up:)
THE 1st time I heard this-I thought of my real friends-most of all of my best friend TMF-JUST so we COULD FEEL this SONG-THIS COMPASSION-TOO something-RACING-NO STRINGS-MOST FAMILY TYPES REMIND ME OF THE LYRICS-THEY just give UP-BUT I GUESS I missed the TRUTH ABOUT the whole SONG-STILL GRABS MY HEART-JAD
I always have tears in my eyes when listening to this song. It is jsut so touching and reminds me of the wild and reckless years of my youth. Thanks for sharing.
pefemm,,you are so right,my wife and i had a hot rod in the early 70's and this song always hits a soft spot in me,,we can still remember those great races and great times we had,no one can take that away,,still makes me feel young and reckless..hope i always feel that way!
Update: After having been in a screwed up relationship for way too long, I have broken free lately. I have found a new partner in crime , and man, what can I say, she likes this song as much as I do. Again, I go out cruising, her head on my shoulder and we have this song on loud. Feels like living again.
pefemm,i hear you,my wife and i had are share of fast rides in the late 60's early 70's,but like in Bruce's song we all grow old and get wrinckles round our eyes,,now are twins are 24 and it seems it was time we went out and got another street missile.got a new VETTE and still like to dice it up on the street just can't find many takers, lots of possers not many takers,,so we will just continue crussing along..listening to great hot rod tunes and looking for a litlle action.nice to hear from you
some guys just give up livin, start dying little by little, piece by piece, some guys get home from work and wash up and go racing in the street......
Heart warming and heart breaking at the same time. If you don't get it, listen better.

it is incredibly inspiring to hear teenagers of 2010 really feeling the music!

@roqueandrolle Absolutely! I saw him four times in 77 78 79 and you my friend GET IT!!! THe BOSS forever!!!
toolooselitrek 1 year ago 2
Yah man I know how you feel. Although i've never seen Bruce Springsteen live he is a huge inspiration in my life helping me get through rough times during my parent's split and other troubles. My dad introduced me to Bruce's music when I was 5 and I'm 16 now. When I listen to his music it's like it takes me to a whole different world where I think about life and other things. That's what I love about Bruce's music, they're very meaningful.

Well that may be. The thing is is that I didn't make a multi-million dollar deal with Wal Mart. I don't even go there.
If you want to live your life by a fair song lyric, feel free to do it.
The fact remains that Bruce is a tool and your Mom is a rimjob artist. Those are a couple of the things that you'll need to deal with as you grow up.
Say 'Hi' to your Mom for me.
Smackdaddy9 2 years ago
maybe that's because wal mart isn't interested in giving you a multi million dollar deal.
bruce isn't a working class guy. he is a millionaire. he has since apologized for the wal mart incident. i wouldn't expect him to be something that he is not.

I would refer you to his contract with Walmart. That other beacon for decency and human dignity.

Update: After having been in a screwed up relationship for way too long, I have broken free lately. I have found a new partner in crime , and man, what can I say, she likes this song as much as I do. Again, I go out cruising, her head on my shoulder and we have this song on loud. Feels like living again.
