Just when I was about to hear the interesting connection between social laughter and the dead in Iraq that fucktard interviewer opens his mouth and changes the subject.
It's outrageous that he feels able to mock Pinter's poetry like that ("My clue was severed head") and then smirk about his health problems. Absolutely disgusting. I have no idea what Rose's aim was, but in terms of what I, or in my opinion any other normal viewer wants from an interviewer - appalling miss, Charlie Rose. Maybe grow up a little before you interview literary titans.

This idiot wrote against the Americans invading Iraq. The Americans were justified in doing so. And they give this idiot nobel prizes, what else should we heep this idiot with ?
@MrAugustus88 He won a nobel prize and is considered a national treasure, he was obviously an extremeley clever man who had opinions like the rest of us. He was not an idiot in the slightest.
before speaking about the right of america to invade Iraq, try to follow the news and the actual facts that are currently available to everyone. After you have, find out where the Nobel Prizes are being organized, held and given...you'll find out that they have absolutely nothing to do with america.

Judging by the impossible to answer, overarching interview question about story and making art, put to Tom Stoppard in one film clip and now Harold Pinter being questioned in this clip, Charlie Rose doesn't seem quite up to the task. He strikes me as someone who invites good interviewees and then squanders the opportunity when they appear.
Read Michael Billington's updated biography of Harold Pinter which was published in 2007. That covers his last ten years, among other things. If you can't get that, then read Billington's 1997 book 'The Life and Work of Harold Pinter'. Good luck, markymagic123, and enjoy whichever book you acquire.
Whatever was cut out from that interview made Rose turn against Pinter - he seemed to be almost over charming Pinter before that, perhaps into a false sense of security so that luaghingly admitting that he likes to think Harold Pinter isn't enjoying dying is that much more hurtful.
Ignoring all the nutty, silly comments about Pinter, I just want to say that Charlie Rose asks the most fangless questions I've ever seen an interviewer ask in my entire life.

Harold Pinter was a tremendous plawright but his war poems, artistically were not that good...Don Paterson attacked him and correctly in my poem. When it came to his politics...let's just say his plays are much better.
we all know the man did not lead a geat family life...and as one who has now spoken to his father in yrs i it dissapoints me deeply to hear this about him....but wat shuld celebrate his achievements and his work....he creates a powerrful atmosphere...he fills a room with tension with words....a great men yes me tinks lol..
Harold Pinter was brilliant. But what is quite maddening is Charlie Rose's idiotic interview. He is such a terrible interviewerand light weight, but this one takes the cake. His stupidity was so stark, it's quite stunning. It was embarassing at times and was interesting to watch how this brilliant and politically astute person abided this interview. Mr. Rose does not seem to understand the basic interviewing technics and is also terribly dumb.

Rose, in fact, asks resonable and obvious questions - the sort of questions that any rational thinking person would ask. Pinter, unfortunately, was an arrogant Champagne Socialist, over-lionised by liberals and way too pompous to really think out the logical conclusion of moral equivalency.
People do not realize that Harold Pinter was Jewish and heartily condemned Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine and Israel's current brutal treatment of Gaza. Pinter was one of 105 prominent Jews who signed a We're not celebrating Israel's Anniversary petition in April of 2008.
The final paragraph of this petition reads as follows " We cannot celebrate the birthday of a state founded on terrorism, massacres and the dispossession of another people from their land.
If there was ever a man who fused his life with his work it is him. Were it not for coming across the Birthday Party in 6th form I would never have developed an interest and gone on to do a Degree in Drama. His work has affected my very outlook on life.
artdog67: No, Sir, you are the idiot. In this life, what comes around goes around and Harold Pinter was a mean spirited hate-monger. I agree with poster DarsowGolf - Pinter will be judged as he was - and I wouldn't want to be Harold Pinter, hate-monger and pathological liar.
I watched the full interview. I was impressed the way Charlie relentlessy probed Pinter to articulate his anti-American views. Pinter came off as someone not used to being challenged on these. His responses were muddled.
However, Pinter was absolutely spot on about Israel.
Pinter is a ledged and what he says about 'natural' and 'social' laughter has a lot to say for things like the friends episode. those guys get god knows how much for what they do because people laugh at the jokes such as the ones that are 'highly thought of' by the writers of that program!!
Why cant that money be put into young play writes, where some actual work has be put in.
a tad harsh.I don't think the 'irony' inherent in his "You read that very well" comment was meant to make charlie look the fool.I think there was a mild irony in his tone, but none moreso then he would give to any situation.I dont know how they do things in the U.S. but its perfectly acceptable for people to playfully slag over here, its the way people approach, noharmintended.I think he liked charlie and his carolina galumphness, he did take the time to appear on the show. charlie is sound enough

For an alternative perspective, google "The Sinister Mediocrity of Harold Pinter," by Christopher Hitchens.
(Pinter, per Hitchens, once said that the 9/11 attacks were a "justified 'retaliation.'")
