Yankees 1972 - ABC News Profiles Sparky Lyle, 8/14/1972

Hard to believe the guy who elevated the Yanks to immediate contenders not to mention an eventual Cy Young winner came at the cost of Danny Cater. The clip of Lyle striking out Brown was about the climax of that season. I watched this on PIX and although there is no sound the excitement of that game was tremendous. They hung in for a few more weeks but they were no where nearly as good as the Tigers or O’s. You can still find the playoff tickets floating around that were printed but never used.

Look at young Sparky!!! Man did he have one of the best sliders in the game.

I could see where Sparky's slider could be effective even if it was the only pitch he used. It just broke down sharply. That is a hard pitch to hit even if you know it's coming. If it hangs though, it's gonna get walloped.

Celerino Sanchez was quite a name in New York that summer. This was the last year before Graig Nettles came to the Yanks.
