That's one purty' lookin' and soundin' guitar you have there, mate. I'm definitely looking into getting one of those in that colour. Thanks for the demo.
@taylornutt I have a duo-sonic left to me by my Dad. I know he bought it new sometime in the 50's. I'd NEVER sell it but was wondering what it's worth. Any idea ? Thanks
@fraidwoodcesco waat no, since it has a solid bridge and is just a little bit shorter, it keeps in tune just fine. Got one myself, it really does a great Nirvana-ish sound if you like fuzz and dynamic range from clean to distorted.
@yipkiyay0 Anything is possible with some patience and a router. The basswood body is light and warm so it would probably get you somewhere around Jag-stang country, though the maple fret board adds more spank and clarity.
@yipkiyay0 No. It's impossible. Well, its not, but it would be like crossing the strings. Seriously, it's best to just not do it. Get a Jagmaster or something if you really want humbuckers...and not destroy the universe.
@yipkiyay0 The Duo Sonic was Fender's original student guitar back in the late 1950's and were 22.7" scale. The Mustang came out in 1965 and was 24" scale. The body of the Duo Sonic is not offset like the mustangs either. After 1965, The Duo Sonic II have the same body as the Mustangs. This Squier is styled like the original Duo Sonics with the non-Offset waist, but the neck is 24" scale like the later Duo Sonics and Mustangs. Maple fretboards were not common on Duos either.
@taylornutt Hi, would you know if the new Duo Sonic has the same body as the original Bullet, which has a Tele neck? I know its not exactly a Strat body....I have a perfect neck with the Bullet and star logo but someone butchured the body, have looked in all the body sites with no luck, the Bullet had 2 different body's also...a cool guitar to restore...poppa
@MrPoppa2 no, you idiot. the duo-sonic has a duo-sonic body, which is nothing like the bullet body. the duo-sonic won't take a tele's neck heel. also, your alice cooper signed bullet is a piece of shit.
Nice guitar. I bought one just like it about six months after you bought yours. Like you, I found that the strings that shipped with it were too light, it went sharp if you pressed hard, and went to 10's also. I like the sharp bite of the single-coils and the fact that even with 10's it's a really slinky guitar that lets you to do some wicked altering of notes in progress. You ought to learn how to do the intonation yourself tho. It's tedious, but not hard once you learn the trick.
Yeah, 10's are pretty slinky on this guitar, they're good for a nasty dirty grungy sound that goes off-tune to create disharmony with just a tiny push, but if you're wanting more accurate fingering 11's or even 12s definitely get you there (I was running heavy bottoms from 12s for a while and it still fingers easily there due to the short scale). It's a flexible little guitar and I like mine a lot.
I do like Nirvana. Seemed fitting since I was demoing a Mustang styled Guitar. I am digging the .11s I just put on it. Might add those to my Custom Jagmaster too.
Thanks for actually reading the description. I plan to do another demo of it over the Christmas Holiday. I don't know if they make a lefty model. I would buy one and flip it upside down or cool project guitar.
i think i buy one! its just a old school looking guitar, reminds me to the fender mustang, the colour is old school and i think its a great playing guitar, isnt it?
Im having problems with this guitar. I brought it about 6 weeks ago. And when i jam with my band the strings just keep snapping. I havent been strumming it that hard either. Do you have the same problems? And do you think the guitar might need setting up.
I have not had any issues with strings breaking. I just put my 2nd set of strings on it and I just switched back to .11s from .10s. I had my local tech look at mine and he said the neck was loose and adjusted one of my saddles slightly. A good setup is always a good idea and will help you figure out the problem. You might also try another brand of strings.
Thanks for replying. I think your right, I need to let a guitar tech setup my guitar. Maybe I should use .11s as its a short scale neck. I only replaced the .9s strings, last thursday and the D and B strings snapped after about 30 minutes of playing the guitar. I was using rotosounds, ive never had any problems with my other guitars. My other electrics are a PRS se eg and Stagg telecaster. They have both never had this problem.
Tuning issues like you were (are?) having are usually caused by the nut slot for that string not being cut deep enough. I'm surprised your guitar tech did not check this out. If the guitar was set up properly it should play in tune with 9s!
I bought one of these and found I had to really push lightly so as not to get notes going sharp. I was going to put 11's on as it came with 9's but four days after light usage the toggle broke so the guitar has been mailed back for an exchange. You heard of anyone else with toggle switch problems? Anyway, I'm hoping the new one, which I've asked to be set up with 11's will be slightly less finicky about going sharp. Otherwise, I found it sounded really good. Thanks for your demo.
I took mine to my guitar tech and the neck was loose. After he tightened the neck, it plays much better. I set it up with .10s. My toggle switch has been fine. I hoep your new one works out for you.
I just hope it sounds as good as the one I sent back. Also, I had a mate check it out for me before I bought it (I don't live close enough to check them out myself) and this one is coming without anyone checking it first so I'm a bit nervous about it! I've read about two so far that had back necks or other issues. Hopefully all will be well.
Should arrive next week some time. I'll let you know how it goes.
How did your tech fix it? Just a matter of loose bolts or something else? I think I may also add some white racing stripes to it and sun-darken the neck. I like the guitar but it needs some jazzing up. It's a bit too monochrome. Reminds me of the silly putty I used to play with as a kid, lol.
The guitar tech tightened the neck plate bolts and tweeked the middle saddle. It really helped with the strings not being so sensitive. I can still make them go sharp, it is definitely manageable. I can't be the factory put .009 gauge strings on this guitar. I saw an original one at a guitar show and it was the exact same color scheme. I think the gold pickguard is the bomb. I plan to do more videos with this guitar soon.
My guitar store is expecting my new one in tomorrow so I ought to have it in a few days. They suggested 10's so I'm going to go with that. Nines for me are too light after coming from an acoustic parlor guitar where I use 11's. I'm pretty confident the setup will be good as he did a good job on the last one. I just hope the guitar itself is as good because the other one sounded super. They're really nice sounding, nice feeling guitars. I love the neck on them.
It's all good. :) Had him set it up with tens this time and it's way less prone to going sharp and doesn't feel so mushy. I'm still going to get a better switch put in though. A mate of mine has a harness he's going to swap into it for me. Otherwise, it sounds as good as the last one.
it kinda is sorta. The original Duo sonics were smaller but after the mustang came out they made them the same size as the mustang. My guitar looks like the originals, but is the size and shape of a Mustang.
I do like Nirvana. I am not as hard core as some, but their sound was amazing. I really enjoy the Nirvana Unplugged concert. I think to make different music you have to sometimes use guitars that are a bit different than the standard (strat, teles, etc)
As I stated earlier, the guitar was tuned. The problem is that if you push with any force on the B string, it causes the note to go sharp. So I either have to press lighter on the strings or see if a guitar tech can fix the problem.
The guitar was tuned and intonated, but I am noticing some notes being sharp. I may have to get the guitar professionally setup if I can't correct the problem.
Totally worth the money... Paid $284 (including shipping) .That custom Jagmaster is pretty awesome...has an original Vista series neck (sweet) and Jaguar HH pickups and tuners. Once I fix an intonation problem, I plan on demoing it soon.
