Like I really want to hear the plane , not somebody talk and VAN Halen , Stupid airshow promoters ruin every new air show this way , hello ! we all know it's a Mustang , so listen to it !!
always a source of irritation: why do the organisers think that a) rock music will enhance the sight and sound of a merlin engine? b) why can't they STOP TALKING FOR A SECOND? Its not a horse race so shut up! nice shots though.
People are speaking below about the 'whistle' from the Mustang.. I have the Haynes book and spoke to service personnel.. I was told that the 'whistle' comes from the underbody air scoop, there is a 'trapdoor' at the back.. can be seen from some angles.. If it's open, the Mustang whistles in flight, tho' not on the ground whilst taxi-ing.
Remember when airshows weren't political jingoism, there weren't insipid announcers rattling on and on like a 12 gauge shotgun, and we could just stand on the ground and watch things happen? What's with the obvious "American" pop 40 cliche music going on and on as if we're the best, don't mess with us bully we'll bomb you into the Stone Age playing in the background? It's no wonder I stopped going to airshows back in the late 80s. They've degraded into pop culture.
When I was a kid (1960's) at Whiteman Airport in Southern California, there was a Yellow P-51 D hangered there. It was THE BEST THING EVER to stand on Osborn St., and the end of the runway, when the pilot took off!! He would ALWAYS get airborn, level off, raise landing gear, fly down the remainder of the runway at about 50' off the deck, and then just before going over Osborn Street, pull back hard and into a vertical climb for about 500 feet or so.... and the roar of that engine!!! AWESOME!!
@nevervne listen here mate i said 'i think its a empty gun barrle' because people have been saying it is but i thought it was a supercharger for a while so lets not argue about it, its a beautifull aircraft so who cares what make that wine
@v8luver64 ...well said. But you were also right below. Not all mustangs make that howl. I know of another that howls like that (Ferociuos Frankie) and the pilot has confirmed that the noise comes from the gun ports when the airflow over the wing is at high angles of attack. I'm not trying to dis anyone here or be a smarty pants. I was curious, I asked someone in the know and that's the answer I got. :)
@Lightjug I don't really believe that. Why no whistle from the hawker hurricane with the 4 20mm, or the spitfires, or the P-40's, or the corsairs? Why can the whine from the P-51 only be heard when the aircraft is either level to the crowd or flying over it? Why can we not hear the whistle when the craft is banking towards the crowd, but we can hear it when it is banking away? I know its the pilot saying it, but a pilot also said an airplane cannot take off from a conveyor belt.
@SpenzOT im pretty sure that whine is the turbo supercharger on the engine.... the placement on the engine is why you only hear it from certain angles
When will people figure out that aircraft enthusiasts don't want the yakking and the music, we want to hear the planes. No need for an announcer at these events. We can figure out what we need to know.
@Cee64E no it's not a "turbo-supercharger" those are 2 different things, but it didnt have any of them. it's the wind passing over the wingspan that's making that whine. if it was a turbo or supercharger, the whine would be continuous.
@goreziad A turbo-supercharger is one device. It is an engine driven supercharger that uses a turbine design rather than the vane design like a Roots-type supercharger. The Packard-built Merlin engine used in the Mustang D most certainly DID have a supercharger. You don't hear it continuously because of aspect changes as the Mustang passes by and lets the roar from 12 cylinders overtake the sound of the intake. Trust me, I know Mustangs.
Why do airshows have to pollute that musical Merlin engine sound with useless gab & that moronic background music?!

I know, you have to dive a stock mustang below 15k feet or so to get evan close to 400.but..ok.

Great aircraft, but perhaps not as good as the ME109 or the Supermarine spitfires. (with the Merlin engine in of course)
Nice video, I give it a thumbs up..

@HealthyCabbie Maybe not as good but certainly prettier.
smallbee1234 2 days ago
@HealthyCabbie look at the kill ratio the P51 and ME109. P51 42% ME109 19%.

@HealthyCabbie probably better than both those aircraft you just named
