You guys are pros at fishing, but my question is what is the point of fishing if you are not going to keep the fish that you caught? You guys were just throwing them back after you caught them.
@littdna317 hey thx 4 watching and commenting :) neither bill, ed nor i would call ourselves pros but we do enjoy fishing. if anyone in the video is a pro it is Bill Martin - truly expert surf fisherman. We do keep an occasional fish but it is rare - we are more inclined to preserve species which need all the help they can get these days!
@bloodknot101 You guys were not really at a river, right? Was this salt-water fishing that you guys were doing? Rivers don't have big waves like this. I don't know why is surf fishing right on the shore not so popular over here in California? What we do over here is we cast our poles right off the pier into the surf line. Maybe's it's because we don't need a license for any pier fishing, so it's easier. Unlike in some states that require license for any fishing activity.
@littdna317 we must have a license to fish any kind of water in delaware - no exceptions. Indian River is the most famous fishing spot in Delaware. It is a tidal river and is saltwater. Instead of the usual estuary where it meets the ocean it simply meets the ocean with sand beachs on both sides. When we fish those beaches we refer to them generally as IR. More and bigger fish are caught inside the inlet in the river part of it but it is usually too crowded and rocks snag lures. tnx 4 watching.
@XRS975 for bait Bill uses 10' St Croix casting rods and AbuGarcia Mag Elite reels. I use 10' Diawa Emcast with Mag Elite reel. For lures we use spin tackle. We have not caught any big blues so far this year - surf fishing in Delaware has been terrible. Thanx 4 watching.
@mrderrick007 if you want a chance to catch the big blues you should consider NJ or NY beaches. over past years delaware beaches have seldom seen the big blues - what is shown in this video happened only once over past 5 years in delaware
@PotomacOutdoors my friend Bill was throwing bait chunks 80 to 100 yds. i was throwing 2oz gator spoon about the same distance but for stripers only need to throw 10 or 20 yrds. thanks for watching.
@TheAussie69 we endeavor to catch fish not look for the worst conditions in which to do it. fortunately our local beaches are not rough. on the other hand we lose an average of 1 to 2 fishermen each year who drown and are usually never seen again because of risks fishing rock jetties at night. thanks for watching Aussie. i will look for more manly fishing videos on your channel page.
The thing I love about this video is the fact that you guys are killing it out there...and you're all alone! The beach is yours! Love it! And happy to see catch and release. Can't wait to get out on the beach ASAP!
@risenflame thanks very much - you are right and we know how fortunate we are to have so much beach to ourselves - we love it. sadly we only get a short few weeks each spring and fall when we have so much beach - the season is on now and will be wall to wall humanity - at this time we generally stop fishing.
@bloodknot101 I hear that...I can't stand it when it gets crowded...however, I'm one of those silly tourists! I've convinced my good friend to make a trip either this fall or next spring to the beach when all the really good fishing is happening, even if the weather isn't the best. I think I'll enjoy it much more than the trips we usually take in July. Tight lines!
@risenflame understood. i felt guilty myself in hatteras with my friend Bill and his family last fall - as i took a turn at being a tourist :) Yeah if you come to our beach to fish I wish you a successful trip. Looks like the hottest action this part of our season may be over but I'm not sure yet. Fall will pick back up but between now and then, my time on the beach will be scant to zero unless i go at odd hours when tourists are sleeping :) thanks for watching my video
@FT86TT i presume you are asking about the chest waders? They are not pants but full bib chest waders - you dont see the tops because of the rain gear. thanks for watching.
nice video...i like it alot...it seems so much of the apitomy of just good ol' fashioned raw fishing....no boats to reach the deep end, no sonar, no fake type of ANYTHING...just good REAL FISHING!!!
@crzyboy646 thank you - yeah ive caught thousands of fish over my life time and stopped keeping them way back 20 years or so ago with rare exception. i kept a 32 inch 12 pound bluefish just 2 days before this video was taken because i really wanted to get images of the fish and my camera had stopped working - i know that is rough but i kept that bluefish just to document it. these days we need to preserve every species! thanks for watching.
@Stupidguy180 oh in that case joe don't worry about it. your boat captain should hook you up with whatever his technique calls for. they may use stretch 25's or 2 and 3 foot artificial eels that look like black garden hoses with hooks in them etc.
@Stupidguy180 from a boat you need to adapt according to what the stripers are doing if throwing lures. If you find them on top you might need a popper or wakebait - if you are buying poppers and can find them get Smack-it poppers the larger size - try to match hatch or get several colors so you can throw one close in color to baitfish they are hitting - silver for mullet, silver with gold or gold for mullet etc You can get some diving lures too yozuri redhead is hard to beat. Bucktails too!
@Stupidguy180 swimbaits like Storm Lazer Eye or Wild Eye are good - get the 5 or 6 inch size and several color patterns. 3 and 4 oz chrome spoon is another one to have in your box. If you have all the lures mentioned in both replies you should be able to get em when the captain finds a working school.
@swidry1 Bill was using a Saint Croix baitcasting rod with Abu Garcia C3 CT Mag Elite casting reel - very nice setup. They no longer make or sell the reel under Mag Elite name - it is now called the C3 CT Mag. CT means no levelwind so if you are not used to a baitcaster you might be better off with a C3 that has the levelwind.
I love your videos and it would be totally awsome if you emailed me what bait and lures to use for the surf that works best for stripers and blues ps I live In new jersey
@Stupidguy180 Joe - sorry for late response. I was fishing at Cape Hatteras with Bill and his family last week and did not have notice before then of your recent comments. If not too late - bait would be mullet or bunker and lures would be spoons and bucktails. Get em Joe!
@meanpupyfish Fantastic - you should do very well down there and I'm jealous! If you are going on a headboat or party boat, the captains will advise you on what to use. frozen squid would not be my first choice. I'd be going with artificials but at least you should talk to the local bait shop down there and they'll set you straight on what to use. Let me know what you get - thanks for watching.
@mmmmmarcus - thanks for watching - tell you what, you come here and fish the last day of November w/o waders and get wet - and please post that video?
@bloodknot101 I'll one-up you on this. How about you come here to the pacific in november without waders? =P Your ocean is warmer than mine. Im on the pacific side. I surf fish in november all the time. The water gets way cold. On a good day, its around 62 degrees f. Im just not bothered by cold.
@mmmmmarcus - if proving your manhood is your purpose for fishing - congratulations - you're a man. my purpose fishing is to catch fish and maintain reasonable comfort in the process. i'm not trying to prove my manhood etc. how about some tough guy west coast fishing videos?
@mmmmmarcus - my remarks are not in angered tone - just saying fishing for me isn't about proving how tough i am, getting wet or not getting wet. who cares. this is about fishing.
Hey Kurt - glad you like the video - thanks for watching. Yeah, the blues have been our target species all along, when fishing the surf. Pound for pound we consider them the hardest fighting fish that is generally available to a surf fishermen. Stripers caught in the process are accidents but stripers are great fish too and I go after them intentionally as shown in other videos fishing inshore areas.
Yes, thanks for noticing. Cannon Powershot SD780 IS - this camera is wicked awesome. Actually, many Cannon Powershot models have same features - the 780 IS is extra small, literally size of credit card. If you don't need something that tiny, you can get the same resolution and features with larger Powershot models (and pay less) - 12MP resolution. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching. Not to worry, as you have seen, my partners and I are not threatening fish populations. Your best bet on where to go depends on where you are. Migrating blues are progessing along the coast. Not sure how much of the whole biomass has passed NJ and Delaware. Currently in lower Delaware, with at least one huge school passed, we are looking for strays and hopefully a few more pods to pass by before it's over this year.
Blues taken on bunker. Striper on Gator spoon. We keep an eye on water and atmospheric conditions but bottom line is when blues are around they'll hit just about anything. Stripers can be a little more picky depending on conditions but I am getting them on just about every lure as shown in some of my videos. Thanks for watching.
yeah - we didn't run into a big school like the day before but we picked up a few strays. i lost a bigger striper in the wash and the first and biggest blue of the day was lost in the wash too - great fun when fish are around!
