I ran into Nick Drake in the record store. Their was something about the cover that attracted me to him. He seem so lonely on the cover. I bought it and then; found out he was into depression. I bought all of his albums immediately.
He makes you in a weird mooe Happy/Sad. I can't explain it. If feels good. Nick Drake will always be with us!
After 16 years (since my birth, essentially) my father has been trying to get me to listen to Nick Drake and I refused. Oh how I have been missing out...
I've seen so many videos where that is the top comment it's just ridiculous. Does rain in the background of your music really make that much better? I personally like to appreciate my music without the sound of electronic rain coming through my speakers.
@sooper2dooper3 when you're dead and gone i wonder how we'll remember the absolute nothing that you've left behind. maybe they'll remember your ridiculous comment on youtube, but i doubt it.

@gabitangerine I know what you mean, but it should never have had to make this guy and I don't believe it did. Just as time went on people realised that this is some of the best song writing of all time.
Gosh i love this song, and Nick Drake is amazing.I just posted my cover of this song on my channel. It's an indie/folk version, check it out if you want. Such a simple song, yet so beautiful.
@heliot58 I don't know if I'd agree there - Fairport are generally far more upbeat than Nick - the only piece that this matches this piece to me would be "who knows where the time goes" and it's absolutely perfect as it is. Don't get me wrong I like both, but I don't think they'd gel together- having played with both Swarb and Nicol I can tell you there were some troubled minds in Fairport too...
@spacepig62 I had been listening to "who knows" a ;lot maybe thats why i had that feeling about Nick Drake and fairport. I love Pink Moon.It seems like he was really creative at this point. Thanks for your insightful comment!
@heliot58 No problem - to me it's Nick's best piece as "Who knows..." is Sandy's best piece...You'll notice I differentiate Sandy Denny and Fairport on this song since she wrote it at least a year before joining them, and 2 years before recording it with them - it always seems to me to be her song with Fairport's backing rather than a true Fairport song. Have a listen to "a sailors life" with your eyes closed and feel the sound grow and grow - that's Fairport at their absolute best to me.
@ghurley42 If it hadn't been used to sell cars, then almost no one apart from people who knew him personally would know about his art. Also, I think that the cabrio ad that volkswagen used this tune in is a piece of art in itself if you take out the volkswagen logo at the end.

Love this BEing shared with me. These gifts arrived on my skype This 12/5/2011 Monday Morning; What a treat. Oh how I needed these musicians of greatness. It is most magnificent. I had the tune Solid Air sent my way that John Martyn penned for Nick; then I met Nick here. He needed someone to understand him; he had to be in such emotional turmoil. IT is such a joy to have Nick's songs here for us to share; so from afar Nick knows he lives on in each of us as we listen to his creations. <3 to All
How scintillating is that piano solo?! It gives me chills every time with that joyful descending melody. I adored this song the first time I heard it, wrote and sang a harmony with it the second and treat myself to it every time I need a pick-me-up. He was an extraordinary musician unappreciated in his time and underappreciated now.
@SometimesElinor Man, that sounds so perfect. The only thing that sucks is either the music is too low or the rain is too loud. But I have tried to listen to the entire album on a very cold, rainy, winter day and it sounds so perfect. I wonder if you ever give the entire album a try.
@MrSuperweasle Though I agree that Nick was a brilliant artist (I am old enough to have had his albums when they were first released!) try John Martyn as a contender for another folk artist - he wrote Solid Air about Nick - they were stable mates at Island Records.
listen folks you guys like him because he died in the end. imagine it written by some asian dude who is almost 80 now you think you folks still give a sh*t? really. it was a perfect death. in a fairytale way.
I remember the night I first heard this song, a musician myself in my twenties, cutting my teeth in the Austin, Texas music scene. The clubs had all closed down, and the night owls went to a 24 hour cafe called Magnolia Cafe near a lake. I got a seat by the window; ordered pancakes and was staring up at a full moon with pink clouds blowing across it, the kind you see in Austin because of the reflection of the city lights on the atmosphere. Pink Moon came on the sound system. I will never forget.
@GreatRecordings that must be a great memory i had my this one memory. i was watching the sun going down from my window and the sky wasn't pink at all maybe some pink clouds but that was all and then i saw this moon and it really was pink!!! it was such a beautiful color...
just so compleatly wonderfal words fail me Nick Drake amazing and why it took nearly 35 years for him to be truly discoverd god only knows wherever you are Nick may god bless you R.I.P dear friend.
@lionsome Yeah.. "pink pink pink pink" brilliant stuff there.. I like Drake's music, but he doesn't leave anybody lost in thought trying to find greater meaning when the music stops. Dylan does.. and that is why Dylan is one the greatest songwriters ever.
@OkieSlims Are you kidding? Great musicians were dying just to back Dylan up on stage. Petty and the heartbreakers were Dylans house band for years. Dylan may not be able to sing in a classical sense, but his sound is absolutely unique and fitting to the music he played. Furthermore, nobody can reproduce his sound. Listen to the musicality of his voice in Tangled up in blue.. Ignore the tone, which you obviously dislike, and just pay attention to the rising and falling and blending and morphing
this is the kind of song that's so perfect - the music and his voice together....that I hope no one, no matter how skilled they are, ever covers it. its one of those songs that captures the mood, place, and time in my life when I heard it. anybody else?
@suhayla11 i do hope someone covers it, maybe to get inspiration for making a new song with just as much feeling as nick had, maybe that cover wakes people up, and they start to look for the original and find nick drake, and then a new fan is born...
Who in Nick's family has the rights and is selling his music to Volkswagen and AT & T to make commercials? It's kinda sad that at one time these commercials were all over the TV and if you did hear this song somewhere else you would automatically think of the stupid commercials (Pink Moon=Volkswagen; From The Morning=AT & T).
@jjp009 But f it hadn't been in those adverts lots of people would never have heard of him. Its a necessary evil that probably does more good than harm.
@lladsbid Agreed. Without recalling anything specific to mind, I bet that's how I became a fan of at least one artist's music. Hopefully, the commercials will disappear after a while and just the beautiful music will remain.
He was not only a great singer, songwriter, finger stylist, but he strums a guitar like no one else, the touch is immaculate. There's more to strumming than just up down etc. Hi sense of timing is perfect and that little piece of piano...what simplicity. Simply beautiful Nick. Thanks for all your music and all it has taught me. Anthony
Brilliant as Nick's fans know. Saw the Pink Moon at Assateague Island Maryland right before Hurricaine Irene. Thought it a ship on the horizon until it slowly rose to it's rightful place. Knew Nick had seen it and wrote the song and I was mesmerized by the moment.
Nick Drake . .sadly was one of the most under appreciated artists in his time . .His story has so may parallels to other great artists like Van Gogh . .
I'm an aspiring singer/songwriter. I'd like some feedback on my music, and I figured I'd go to a respected artists page to find fans who know what's what. If you would like to critique, slander, or praise my music that would be appreciated. I appeal to your superior musical culture as nick drake lovers.
@nathanlippert , if that offer to listen to your music is still open, I'd appreciate listening to your music. I don't sing or play music, so I don't critque. I can only tell you how the music felt and you go from there. I am almost 63, but I listen to all music, even the Kottonmouthkings if I feel rebellous, Hee Hee. Do you have achannel here on youtube? That would get listeners for you.
@santanaincubus He performed live from 68 til around 70 or so, but he never liked performing live. Furthermore, most of his songs are in different tunings so he probably felt uncomfortable playing a song and spending a few minutes tuning his guitar to play the next song.
@EddieIffthasAIDS Oh, thanks for the info. Its pretty interesting actually that most of his songs are in different tuning. So it takes time to play it live or he shuld have just rather have like 5 acoustic guitars in different tunings for him to play live lol.
@santanaincubus From what I have read, he was a very shy person who didn't particularly like live performances much at all. I remember reading somewhere that his last song he performed live was Fruit Tree in 1970 (two years before Pink Moon was released) which was pretty much his suicide note if you read the lyrics. He supposedly got emotional and couldn't finish the song and left in the middle of the song. The 5 guitar thing is definitely a good idea though.
@EddieIffthasAIDS Oh its a pretty sad thing though. I wasnt aware that he got emotional and coudnt get to finish the rest of the song. Anyways, he has a big fanbase now from all over and he's a great man from the music he made.
@TubaGirl01 Actually John Martyn was Nicks buddy and wrote a song called , Solid Air about him it is wonderful and for me John Martyn is just as talented. Check him out. Try Head and Heart or his greatest May You never or Small Hours.
It's a shame there's no video footage of Nick Drake's performance. He made a lot of beautiful songs in such a brief time, and he will always be remembered and missed. It's just an insult of music that Nick Drake hasn't been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he should of been inducted years ago.
@a588956 i knew there was a bbc radio recording at john peel, practically impossible to find. maybe something happened during last years and it was published?
He is fantastic. You have to take into account 96% of the world are idiots and have no taste...listen to what's on the radio and TV!!! He really should get more recognition, I think his music can speak to everyone!
does anyone else ever daydream about going back in time to the night that he overdosed and just sitting there in his room talking to him all night long. completely preventing that incident from happening.
I had never heard of Nick Drake until yesterday, on a boat in Sweden....and I was told to listen to it, because I would like it - and the person that told me that, was right........ and I am truely amazed at his music.........he was truely gifted....a classic....
R.I.P. Nicholas Rodney "Nick" Drake (19 June 1948 – 25 November 1974) was an English singer-songwriter and musician. Best known for the sombre pieces composed on his primary instrument, the guitar, Drake was also proficient at piano, clarinet and saxophone. Although he failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, Drake's work has gradually achieved wider notice and recognition; he now ranks among the most influential English singer-songwriters of the last 50 years.
Thank you very much for posting this song. This video makes you also think about the short life of this great artist. (I mean, u expect 4:05 min song and it suddenly ends on 1: 58)

If you would like to critique, slander, or praise my music that would be appreciated. I appeal to your superior musical culture as nick drake lovers.
nathanlippert 4 months ago
@nathanlippert , if that offer to listen to your music is still open, I'd appreciate listening to your music. I don't sing or play music, so I don't critque. I can only tell you how the music felt and you go from there. I am almost 63, but I listen to all music, even the Kottonmouthkings if I feel rebellous, Hee Hee. Do you have achannel here on youtube? That would get listeners for you.

Its pretty strange that he never performed live. But what matters is that he made gems through his LPs.
santanaincubus 4 months ago
@santanaincubus He performed live from 68 til around 70 or so, but he never liked performing live. Furthermore, most of his songs are in different tunings so he probably felt uncomfortable playing a song and spending a few minutes tuning his guitar to play the next song.
EddieIffthasAIDS 4 months ago
@EddieIffthasAIDS Oh, thanks for the info. Its pretty interesting actually that most of his songs are in different tuning. So it takes time to play it live or he shuld have just rather have like 5 acoustic guitars in different tunings for him to play live lol.
santanaincubus 4 months ago
@santanaincubus From what I have read, he was a very shy person who didn't particularly like live performances much at all. I remember reading somewhere that his last song he performed live was Fruit Tree in 1970 (two years before Pink Moon was released) which was pretty much his suicide note if you read the lyrics. He supposedly got emotional and couldn't finish the song and left in the middle of the song. The 5 guitar thing is definitely a good idea though.
EddieIffthasAIDS 4 months ago
@EddieIffthasAIDS Oh its a pretty sad thing though. I wasnt aware that he got emotional and coudnt get to finish the rest of the song. Anyways, he has a big fanbase now from all over and he's a great man from the music he made.

@athenecookiemonster such a nice way of describing his music :-)

This Youtube video probably has been listened to more times than all of Nick Drake's songs combined during his lifetime.

@TubaGirl01 Actually John Martyn was Nicks buddy and wrote a song called , Solid Air about him it is wonderful and for me John Martyn is just as talented. Check him out. Try Head and Heart or his greatest May You never or Small Hours.

@deafflylii1 I've heard the song before, it's beautiful. My favorites are May You Never and Solid Air. John was definitely something.

It's a shame there's no video footage of Nick Drake's performance. He made a lot of beautiful songs in such a brief time, and he will always be remembered and missed. It's just an insult of music that Nick Drake hasn't been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he should of been inducted years ago.
a588956 6 months ago 15
@a588956 It's a shame he had such an aversion to playing live, he only did it a couple times if I recall correctly.
That's probably one reason he didn't get the appreciation he deserved.

@a588956 We don't have video of Beethoven? Do we love him less?

@a588956 i knew there was a bbc radio recording at john peel, practically impossible to find. maybe something happened during last years and it was published?

@a588956 I think I prefer Nick not inducted into the hall of fame. I think I would be insulted if he was. Horses for courses.

@girlwithwit I think it's 6/8 meter. I also think it has a bit of syncopation.
