  • Thank you so much for your positive comments. My father was just hospitalized with ALI so I saw both sides of the bed; quite sobering...

  • WOW.. I am a nursing student, just wanted to look up something about ARDS. Great video, my deepest condolences to those that have been affected by this..

  • Hey just FYI, a respirator is NOT a ventilator. The ARDS USA co-founder mis-spoke. A respirator is a mask that you wear to filter out harmful chemicals from the air (like if you were cleaning hazardous waste). A Ventilator is a machine that delivers oxygen to people who cannot breathe satisfactorily on their own, and has multiple settings to determine how much oxygen, and the way in which it is delivered. An ARDS patient would use a VENTILATOR, not a RESPIRATOR.

  • I am 33 years old, a non-smoker, relatively healthy, married father of 5, and I am currently recovering from ARDS. I was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia last month (in April 2011) on a Friday. 2 days later I was in the step-down unit and my wife - a registered RN - was with me and noticed my O2 sats dropping into the 80s and not coming up. She called in the nurse and they upped my oxygen. That didn't work and my X-ray came back all white, so I was put in a coma and vent for 6 days.

  • @mikeleeisback After literally hundreds of family and friends praying for me and extraordinary care from the nurses, doctors, and my wife not leaving my side, I was released 7 days after being taken off the vent; no home oxygen tank required. I still am working through the depression and fatigue, but I am well enough to start back to work six weeks after being hospitalized. I am very fortunate, but I still have some lingering affects. Others are not so fortunate.

  • I just recently barely survived ARDS and still endure post traumatic effects from the drug induced coma. They have no idea what caused this to happen other than a possible car accident back in Dec. 08 or possibly a recent disc replacement surgery on Nov. 29, 2010 (2 wks prior to the ARDS) The nightmares and lucid memories are horrid. My prayers & sympathies to ALL who deal w/this or those we've lost due to it.

  • thumbs up

  • RNpedia.com to know more about this..

  • Thank you for your time in trying to get the word out about this horribly disease. We lost my mom to ARDS in July 2009. Like others, we hadn't heard about it until we were living it. Please keep up the good work and get the word out!

  • @asilmarie83 I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. This was always one of my goals, to create a video about ARDS for people who were dealing with this, to give an overview, to let people know of the many others out there whose families have gone through this. I remember when I was in the hospital, but still on the vent, I wished there was information available to me to let me know what I might expect, to let me know what had happened to me.

  • My mom is in ICU with ARDS. She was sick for 3 months with shortness of breath before I could convince her to go to the doctor. She went down in about 24 hours. A nurse for 30 years, she should have known better. She is on the ventilator and now we have to make the decision about whether to continue treatment or not. She isn't going to make it. We have had one complication after another. I've never seen anything so horrible and I've been a nurse for 28 years. Thank you for providing information

  • Always thank you for what ya'll do! 6 months post ARDS and you helped my family more than you can ever know! Thank you!

  • I am a nursing student and I see this all the time, it is devastating! My heart goes out to all of you and your experiences.

  • I had ards and it was a battle but I walked out of the hospital , and it totally sucked having this especially at 37 yrs old and it tried to take me and i faught it very hard , it totally sucked I went in for out patient surgery and did not come home for 3 months..

  • As a survivor my family and I thank you. Today is my 30th birthday, 6 months ago I was in ICU, I am thankful I am here today.

  • Why hasnt anyone put this on tv or anywhere ?My son died on October 28,2009 from ARDS .I am thankful that I had somewhere to go for information however that was after my son was dead. Also why hasnt asked the government for making Public service announcements in regars to ARDS.

  • My brother has been weaned from the ventilater and released from ICU in Colorado Springs @ Memorial Hospital. He was vented for 53 days. He is currently taking Physical therapy to regain his strength. This video has been very powerful in understanding ARDS. Thank you so much! He is on the road to recovery!

  • My name is Julie McCarthy. I had ARDS 9 months ago after a trip to Mexico. I NOW BELIEVE I HAD THE SWINE FLU which turned in pneumonia, then ARDS. I was in hospital 24 days (I.C.U., then Critical Care). Was only given a 30% chance to live. Luckily, I fully recovered!

Warning to Swine Flu victims - IF YOU START HAVING SHORTNESS OF BREATH, GET TO E.R. IMMEDIATELY! From the time I first had trouble breathing, I WAS ON FULL LIFE SUPPORT WITHIN 36 HRS. Be careful. GOD BLESS ALL WITH ARDS!!

  • @juliemccarthy66

really happy to hear that you are fully recover (:

right now my father is suffering the same conditions as you

  • My Girlfriend's brother lost his battle last night around 11pm (GMT). This happened very quickly, a matter of days.

I had never heard of this condition.

Spread the word, and be aware...

  • please accept my deepest condolences. Yes, we definitely are working on awareness, education, research!

  • My dear friends son has this at the moment, and the doctors have lost all hope of him recovering. If anyone reads this please say a prayer for Jamie hughes - he is critical, he can't die, his family would fall apart if he were to die. Please help, thank you xxxx

  • This is what Don is being treated for.

    It's devastating to all involved.

Don is strong! Don is tough!
