  • hey i want to set up a solar cooker with my 15 x 15 inch fresnel lens. it gets good temps but its a spot lens. so should i use a mirror to reflect the focal point from the fresnel lens to the bottom of the pan or should i just the fresnel lens to a side of the pan?

  • interesting, tho I have to say good old fire, combined with a pre-filted water (use a cotton bandanna )would have been easier IMO. 10 minutes of a rolling boil and allow to cool and you have potable water.

  • @leaualorin They wouldn't work at night. Also, Infrared rays lack the energy necessary to make this solution practical. I bet people with minds brighter than ours are working in this sort of things. We should get used to the fact that we won't be the ones making the breakthroughs.

  • great video, mind you the water boiling for 5 minutes generally makes potable water if filtered finely with cotton fabric or gravels, and of course not chemically polluted source. for chemical polluted source this is perfect, but distilled water is unhealthy as essential minerals are lacking.

  • Why do you even bother with the first step? If you are vaporizing the water, I would imagine that would leave behind the swimmers and kill bacteria? Boiling temp?

    i have an idea... if you use a clear bottle but inside have a dark colored marbles it work best, and you dont have to worry about breaking the jar...

  • Great experiment, and very powerful lens. Never knew they could burn wood on contact! Amazing!!

    With respect, I feel I should point out that glass passes very little UV light and so is not ideal for using the sun's UV radiation to kill bacteria. It does however pass IR radiation, hence the warmth. But the water would need to get to above 77 degrees C to kill the bacteria. Might I suggest the water doesn't need to be sterilised as the fresnel lens will kill bacterium when it heats the water

  • Concentrating sunlight is the key. The black container is a must. It's possible to use aluminum kitchen foil in a solar cooker made from cardboard to collect enough heat to cause steam. The idea of using as low tech as possible in poor areas is only logical. Solar cooker designs are available on the net. I'm in Peru where water is an issue in some areas. I like the idea that nothing is impossible. You can distill other things as well.

  • @tjwano I would go for reverse osmosis setup to remove/purify well water. It will remove arsenic from your well water and it will improve taste. You only need to replace the cartridges once in awhile, also there are some cheaper kits on Ebay.

  • Floks that are alarmed know this a coffe filter and a few hours in uv light will make that water safe to drink as long as it does not have agricultural runoff in it. A problem in Florida because of the sugar plantations. The USA subsidizes the sugar industry to grow sugar while they invest millions trying to prevent loss of the everglades it is stuck on stupid retarded. Exactly why this country is going broke they all know what is up but no one wants to give due to lobbyists.

  • @greenpowerscience : why do you need to use the UV exposure? its kind of repetitive. extremophiles that could actually survive past 100 deg C are extremely rare and those that are are not pathogens. 99.9% of proteins denature at that temp which would kill the organisms just by boiling them.

  • A bit of a problem. The heated water bottle needs more "head room" between the water being boiled and the copper pipe. Otherwise the heat will just push untreated water through the line. The steam is the only thing that should be going up the copper tube. As set up the hot water expand and gets pushed up the tube untreated.

    This would not be good as you would be pumping untreated water. User a taller bottle with only a small bit of tube peeking into the colored bottle seal to collect the steam.

  • One last thing: You should add a few grains of salt to any distilled water, otherwise it will be like drinking free radicals, and you don't want that.

  • first of all, boiling water in such a small vessel will result in not only the water vapor going through, but also it will push un-vaporized liquid that was suppose to be vaporized through the tube. why not just boil the liquid? same damn result as this crappy setup easier too.

  • I do believe that SODIS can't use glass bottles because it blocks UV light, but the Fresnel lens might concentrate enough so the stuff that does leak through does disable bacteria? Thats not necessary because it is being boiled and distilled.

  • good idea but you probably should use a stainless steel boiler painted black

    that way you don't break a bottle everytime you need a drink of water

  • How about you use a clear bottle with the stainless steel wool instead of the blue bottle? Hopefully that wouldn't break so easily. I also wonder if you setup a siphon from your first bottle to the second how much more water you could get through this system. At the very least it should help keep water in it so the bottle wouldn't get fatigued so easily and break.

  • Great water filtration system that anyone can do in their backyard.... just need a 10 sq.ft fresnel lens :P Anyway there's some great heat experiments. But personally, I'd be wearing welding goggles or at least good sunnies, coz the intense sunlight reflecting off the bottle is going straight in your retinas.

  • At the beginning of the video you said you were going to eat up the water in the clear bottle with some sunshine and a "blast" of UV rays. Just a tidbit of information. Glass blocks all uv rays therefore all you were doing was heating the water. You could have just let the sediment  sink to the bottom and go straight to the boiling. Any micro-organisms in the water will die in the boiling and not evaporate with the water. I guess you can save time that way.

    Does the bottle have to be blue, or can it be clear?

  • @BJ219 You can scale up and the bottle needs to be a dark color, clear will not work at all.

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE UV sterilisation=unnecessary. I'd recommend you aligne the copper like here: watch?v=sBAi_TVNaiM So that you end up with a condensor end like you allready have and a refill end and of the copper hose. The refill end should have a lid on it, to not lose steam. But be EXTREMELY carefull! Refilling a dry and extremely hot copper pipe creates a very dangerous blast of steam.Some small rocks in the hose -> more efficient.That way it's still simple design. Greetings from Germany :)

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE hey mate, i got a question, i see the process is straight forward, but why dont you take it to the next level? imagine something a bit bigger for a small distillation plant that is commercially viable, i can make this at home, but i would prefer to buy a whole package of a sun tracking system with powerfull fresnel lens and collecting tubes, a whole package that produce a certain amount of water in a really hot environment like qatar or saudi arabia. thanks

The old, big screen tv's (some of them) used three colored light bulbs in the lower rear of the set, and they reflected, with mirrors, through the big fresnel lens. I have one, it is 38 inches by 29 inches. It will start a fire FAST! I had the old 70's style big screen tv, and it quit working, so I kept the bulbs and the lens. The bulbs were big, shaped like outdooor floodlight bulbs. I keep my eyes open for another one, but :rare

  • @MasterUndead225 Yes, it would, but only for a few seconds. The water on the cloth would quickly evaporate, and then the cloth would ignite and burn away from being in contact with the hot pipe.

  • @acedagaiin Distillation will not remove radioactive particles. However, as cited in the vid you linked, reverse osmosis can neutralize some of the radiation.

    some problem you can get is chemical or by product chemical not all chemichal get destroyed by sun light alone,as they can produce some vapor too,and the water must taste not as good because is been boiled so you kill all the good thing in the water

    Couldn't you put black food dye in the dirty water therefore allowing it to absorb the suns rays. This has the added benefit of allowing you to use a clear bottle instead of a coloured one, this could eliminate the glass shattering??

We expect advance machinery to help us do the jobs or get it the job done quicker. This is not the 19th century were everybody us to do hard labor. We're growing lazy & relying on certain sources to help us.

  • @blueberry2118 Its not just America. In Australia we bitch and moan about the dam levels and all the government can do is put a curfew on our hoses.

    Our dam levels are always low. We are only allowed to water our lawns 2 times a week and we have to wait for our day ( if your house number ends in 9 you can water on Tuesday and Thursday) and we will get a big fine if we are caught.

    Fining people is a much easier alternative and plus they make a ton of money on it.

  • heres an idea, take the boiling jar to the water source, and set it up there, use the cooler water from the source to help cool the collecting container. just misdirect the lens, open the latch, pour in some bad water, close the latch, redirect the lenz, and bingo. the cooler source water will make the collection more efficient and the black cast iron boiler will be more resilient. after a few distillations, simply rinse the excess waste from the boiler (which is sterile) and repeat with more

  • @villebraquin good 4 you unless you have famine. Developed nations have 5-11 x the sodium intake above needed levels. Sodium is the first to leach. Many myths about distilled water are copy pasted on many websites. All untrue. Distilled water is about the best thing you can drink. 1 drop of milk per 8 oz glass = mineral water.

  • @GREENPOWERSCIENCE Ive been drinking distilled water for 7 months now, I feel perfectly fine. In-fact I cant even drink fluoridated/chlorine tap water anymore it just tastes like medicine. I usually put some bicarbonate soda, to raise the PH, sea salt and epsom salt to add some electrolytes back in. Its tasty!! Also its not the best sight when you see yellow chemical leftovers from distillation.

  • @villebraquin Distilled water would be dangerous in an IV or any other kind of injection. The reason people poo poo distilled water is because of what many of us learn in high school biology about the hypotonic condition that cells can exhibit when osmotic pressure causes too much water to flow into the cell. Really though, you have so much stuff lining your esophagus and in solution in your stomach that drinking distilled water shouldn't be a problem.

  • The sediment might be from not making the pipe good and clean, inside and out. That or just airborn trash from the traffic going by. Cheese cloth anyone? And yes, the pre-kill stage should go to a light boiling to gas off any chemicals.

    Copper piping is cheap, copper is soft and bendable, copper is easyier to cut. Copper is also non-toxic, as is cupric oxide (copper oxide), at least in the amounts that you would get by doing this.

    Your could try potable water piping, but the temperatures being generated might melt it. Steel and iron pipe is too expensive and hard to work with.

  • QUESTION WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU TRIED THIS TO DISTILL ANCOHOL WOULD IT EXPLODE IF YOU USED A PYREX BOTTLE

  • @waylan3 Where do you think "moonshine" comes from ?

    Alcohol would have to reach ignition temerature, which is much higher than distillation temperature.

    Also, to burn something requires a certain ratio of fuel to air, which might not occur within a still that is properly built.

    I wouldn't recommend distilling your own home brew though, unless you made your beer, or wine with yeasts from commerical sources. Some organisims make methanol, which is poisonous, while ethanol is not

  • @EasternMerchant This is already done...pee is turned into ice crystals and a large machine sprays it onto mountains so people could ski and stuff.

  • Now I know what to do with that 3 foot square fresnel I salvaged from an old projector type big screen TV. As I am aware of what a 3 inch lens can do, I have to admit that the idea of putting the big lens in the sun was a bit daunting. The power of sunlight is somewhere around a kilowatt per square yard.

  • @Soldier957 Yes, UV as well as IR are blocked by glass. However, it does not usually block all of it. One can take a piece of window glass and hold it between a heat source and your face and you will notice a definite effect. Some of the heat does get thru. Another material that may be used is acrylic plastic sheet. This does not block as much, if any.
