I'm sick of CGI and dumbed down scripts. I wish someone would make serious films in the style and original ideas of the 1970s. We have a few, but almost nobody now.
Fond memories of going to the movies with my cousins in 1978. The theatre lights went off... the curtains opened (yeah, the old days)... and the music started. Jerry Goldsmith knocked this score out of the park. Spectacular main theme. Great action music. And, top it off with a lovely romantic theme for James Brolin and Brenda Vaccaro. Jerry is sorely missed. At least his wonderful music is timeless. A great man.
Forget the Movie just listen to the Music especially when a full orchestra is cranking it up. I guess film music by these composers is a kind of late 20th century classical music. Especially when a orchestra is involved.
This is a phenomenal piece of music. It sounds very nice. The Orchestra did a very nice job and it almostsouds like the original theme to the note. Bravo!
@execmiller hows about in a movie about ralph nader in unsafe at any speed the book starts with a child rideing a bycycle down a hill and is impaled on the tailfin of a cadilac and killed then he has general motors stooges following him around then he blows them away in court .
@Australopitcus 123 If it was fake why didnt the Soviets call the US out.And at splashdown, where would the capsule have come from if it was hiding. Wouldnt government try to kill Armstrong just like they tried to kill Brubaker.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL-at Cal Tech) is one of the great innovative and gutsy American institutions (responsible, among many other things, for the Mars Rover landings).
Give them the Mars Manned Mission and let them figure it out how do it and run with it! .
I think the reason Mr. Goldsmith did not achieve the name recognition of some of his fellow movie composers did is, ironically enough, because his music...his style...was too diverse for the average audience member to attach a signature to his scores.
This is a testament to his genius and his dedication to the story-line. Unlike Mr. Goldsmith, John Williams has a specific signature style that runs throughout all of his scores.
@greenmonsterprod, this version is played by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. I actually like this version better than the original, which is also good.
its just you... I mean, the first interval is similar... but that's about it... the fact that its a slow melody over a fast pasted and moving bass/percussion line.
Jerry Goldsmith is a bloody legend who is up there with all the greats.what a geat score, and a few of my favourites are as follows in no particular order. Supergirl Star Trek Voyager Runaway<--remember this one? Hoosiers<fucking awesome sports film Total recall Rudy<--another awesome sports flick omg what a resume and thats just a few thanks Jerry for giving us some wonderfull moments
Putting aside all this faked moon landing BS, this movie is nothing short of excellent. From the story to the writing to the actors to the music, its nothing short of a classic.
I saw it twenty times. It is excellent and I agree not for the conspiracy theme (the US landed on the moon and probes have landed on Mars) but the sheer audacity of the big lie (which I do believe is possible on many different levels with the government) and a man's story of survival.
I would argue that the movie is flawed. The mission called for them to go to Mars, but using an Apollo spacecraft to do it. A 9-month trip to Mars requires a LOT more than a 4-day trip to the moon does, in terms of resources, contingency equipment, and just plain leg-stretching room. Real Mars mission plans call for a much larger spacecraft.
That's true. There were obvious technical flaws but the overall story plus Lord Grade's production made this a classic. When it was in the theatres my parents saw it on a Friday and then the next morning they made me and my siblings go see it.
Can anyone tell me why the strings are missing in the bridge section. They only appear on the actual movie credits and the Intrada re-release of the score. I think it's a huge anti-climax at 42 seconds in without them. This also doesn't sou
The music is fantastic and the film's thesis is great-not to disparage NASA (which the film does)-and not to play into cheap conspiracy theories-but given what we see now in the "land of the free"...There is too much in the film thematically which can now be in tomorrow's news.
Interesting, the scene when the Feds set up Elliot Gould by planting cocaine in his home.
Several years ago the police in Columbus, Ohio tried the same shit with me by planting a baggy full on the soft shoulder of a street I oftened walked down at night. Didn't work though because I tore open the baggy the snort was in and scattered it all over the street. Two minutes later, the cops pull up out of nowhere but couldn't do a damn thing because it wasn't on my person.
he should of won one for every one of his scores. All of his scores were uniqu in some way. John Williams is good too just he seems to have the same theme t each of his movies.
Jerrys score fits the theme with a dramatic wallop of clash of brass and percussion, must have seen this film at least 4 or 5 times, now wheres a decent six-track Dolby stereo version on DVD that I can pick up.
because I don't have 138 billion dollars and nasa stoled that money to fake the fist moon landing and if you reply I don't even will read your reaply. Sorry fo my spelling.
Next year NASA will send a satelite orbiting around the moon to map the surface, the photo resolution will be 1 meter, so we will see the LEM launching that stayed on the moon surface.
The soundtrack LP was a re-recording (Intrada released the original music; unsurprisingly it's now out-of-print, but I wouldn't be surprised if a YouTuber uploads Sir Jerry's work).
Last night on BBC2, saw it for the 5th time again, what a movie, great story. Awesome!!
Does anyone know's "Mind over Murder" 1979?
This movie is really a cult thriller, many people want this on DVD, there's a little fanclub who is dying 2 see it again. But no videoclub or TV Station knows it or wanna reshow it ..Bloody Shame !!
Absolutely brilliant mid-70's score. A lovably cheezy film but with a fine musical treatment. Asymetrical meter and tuned percussion - what more could you ask for?

Goldsmith conducted his own theme for the Telarc release "Frontiers" with other own sci-fi themes.
Nic Raine also recorded the piece with the City of Prague Philharmonic and has been released in a number of Goldsmith compilations they've done.
I think there's another recording, but I'm not sure and who may have done it.
I'm not sure which one is this.
