Listening to this song can be really painful, even now, when it makes you think of being dumped by a beautiful twenty-year-old girl from Würzburg in Germany many years ago. The woman is gone, the song remains.

It was also called Someone New or Someone Knew. Either could work in this beautiful, bittersweet song about a breakup. The chorus lifts and sways like Beast Of Burden, the turnaround is like Faraway Eyes. Easy to figure the time period, but not why it failed to surface, a noted below, at least on Emotional Rescue. Go figure, bad liquor.
@rubyrose456 All the trademarks of the period were in this great song. When I got it on a Some Girls sessions disc, I played it 7 times, took a day off and played 7 more times. Even the pauses, breakdown and windup are classic. Charley was on top of it. This was a great day in the studio. The vocal is a bit garbled at times, perhaps showing a lack completeness to it on Mick's part, as there seems to be only one verse that gets repeated, but who cares. Most would kill for an outtake like this.
@A1MaxJones No Doubt!!! I am discovering, thanks to the many Stones fans on youtube who contribute just this sort of material, a lot of the "classic" sounds and elements...evolutions to their stuff; the 'pauses, breakdowns and windups you are pointing out! Just SO PSYCHED, I am to get them! Especially, from what I've been checking out, from, like mid 70s-, really, I'm learning, when they REALLY came into their own with Exile- right on up through! I just love 'em so much! THANK YOU! for the info!
yeah the stones were great...and still are, though iam one of the biggest fan ever!!:) i dont think they do sutch mutch work anymore...Mick and co is getting old and they dont sound as good as they did..
i just make a guess now..."what gives u the right" is not a strong title for a song...maybe mick didnt like it and he didnt find other lyrics for that great music...
This is a fantastic song. Great melody and strong guitar work from Keith and Woody. Should have been worked through and put on "Emotional Rescue" (at the very least!) considering the songs that ended up on that album.
The Stones don't need to write a new album. They just need to go back and get this stuff and maybe rerecord it so they capture the many more years of experience. I really like this one.
@cracks21229 You're going to get your wish, because a remastered version of Some Girls is coming out in November which will include outtakes and unreleased songs, just like they did for Exile.
a case of fine, red wine and old Stones outtakes would please me well.....thank you stones.....

@202pdiddy not really, it's 2011 singing... not the original 1978
GCOUNDOU 3 months ago
@GCOUNDOU I realize that, but it's not all the tracks. Even on the songs with new vocals, it's not much of a difference.

I can't believe this didn't make a Stones album. Great song. Love it.
