110% your grip and thumb is at fault for not locking the slide back after firing the final round. Just pay attention to your thumb and where it is resting, pretty close to the lock. This is from experience lol
I've had the slide not lock before many times, and my friends never had a problem. I figured out though...after awhile, and talking to some people on proper gun handling...that you don't want to rest your trigger hand or the "right" hand thumb on the locking mechanism...just have both thumbs stick out a little bit...and that should allow the slide to lock when empty... unless I completley misunderstood the problem...lol. in that case...disregard my comment.
I've had an XD 9mm for about four months. After 600 rounds I've had zero failures...even with dropping my mags in the mud. I absolutely love the gun! Looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for taking us along!

@kakasanti it does feel a little top heavy, but i don't carry this model. The new XDm 3.8 subcompact would be an excellent conceal carry tho
