  • AARON TVEIT I LOVE YOU

  • haha, the sound cues were a bit all over the place!

  • this was the first real clue that billy elliot was gonna win, it was the opening number of the opening numer and got the longest time slot other than hair.

  • Is it true he tried to sue...how'd that pan out? lol

SN: lol at the guy in the background @ 5:30...it looks like he was trying to see if Bret was alright

  • Did anyone else notice that while the guys from West Side Story and Guys and Dolls are singing, it sounds like someone backstage has their mike on? I can hear coughing and people warming up.

  • 'Rock Of Ages' was anything but live.

  • @weemizzi haha i knew it sounded like that was his name but i wasnt sure how it was spelt xD

  • OMG ITS TROUP FROM GOSSIP GIRL!!!

  • @jrose7000 do you mean trip? as in Aaron? LOVE HIM!!!

  • oh my god, the bret michaels thing is hillarious.

  • Why the heck did they try to mash up Stockard Channing & Aaron Tveit. She just messed up "I'm Alive"!

  • this year was really a great year for musicals and a great Tony Awards! These past two years have been...eh.

  • Bret Michaels is lip synching. I never noticed it until now.

  • 4:55 didn't that lady play Rizzo in the movie Grease? or does she just look like her?

  • @Mrwickedman95 Yep, that's Stockard Channing.

  • Damn Rizzo has still got it.

  • This is sooooo amazing! (did anyone else hear all of the weird sounds in the backround?)

  • I like the microphones with the people warming up.

  • I' m sorry If I sound raceist saying this, but the girl who plays Maria dosen't look Hispanic. But yet again I guess she dosen't have to be.

  • @MsBwaybabe Josefina Scaglione (Maria) is Argentinian. She IS Hispanic.

  • @MsBwaybabe ha you suck for not knowing that Josefina Scaglione was from Argentina. Clearly, your username should NOT be MsBwaybabe if you didn't know that. Good job.

  • @MsBwaybabe I'm sorry, that was rude. I forgive you for not knowing that fact.

  • @MsBwaybabe you dont have to look like the sterotypical hispanic to be hispanic

  • @MsBwaybabe all hispanic people look different not just dark brown. josefina is from argentina which happens to contain a lot of lighter skinned people.

  • aaron tveit! :D

  • The Sound Engineer needs to be executed :P

  • Stockard Channing:)

  • As if the Tonight Quintet isn't complicated enough! haha

  • Billy Eliot is AWESOME! I watched this video just for the Bily Eliot performance! :)

  • @Lee6273 Saw it on broadway...pretty magical!!!

  • rock of ages ruined the broadway magic... -___-

  • 5:34 is that bret michaels' hat on the floor?

  • Anyone here just see Bret Michaels get knocked out? I think that's the musical gods smiting him for showing his ugly face at the Tony awards.

  • @PoynterFinger Pal joey

  • That looked like it hurt Bret Michaels ouch!

  • Did anyone fired the sound technician, after the mess?

  • what show is the one with stockard channing?

  • 5:00 shes from greese!

  • @TheSteph4you Yep, that's Stockard Channing.

  • Comment removed

  • Did anyone else notice Bret Michaels get smooshed by the wall coming down?

  • @Beatleslover231 YES!! OMG!! that looked so painful! did you see his injuries after

  • @Beatleslover231 smooshed is a great word. You win for using that word.

  • @Beatleslover231 he got absolutely f"""ed up hahahah nailed!

  • Stockard Channing <3

  • Absolutely love Billy Elliot and West Side Story!! <3

  • I completly skipped over Rock of ages....

  • what is the name of the lady in minute 5:23

  • There was a very simple problem to these Tonys. All of the shows performed their best numbers in the opening number so their later performances were rather boring and not the best song choices.

  • 5:00 is that thet girl from grease? :D

  • @domenikaXxo kinda looks like her, you mean rizzo right? lolz haha at first to me she kind of looked like the woman who played janet in shock treatment but her voice sounded higher..... XD

  • West Side Story/Guys And Dolls Mash Up! Súper Like!!!

  • the guy playing Tony from West Side Story is FINE!!!!

  • @danceSINGactBWAY Okay. We have a compramise. You are correct about the warming up before the start of the show, but there are many other tech issues during the performance (Elton John's mike *not* on at the beginning; flat hitting the guy on the head etc.) I think the opening number was doomed from the word go.

Still looks as though it was awesome though. Wish I could have seen the whole show :(

  • @danceSINGactBWAY Actually, i think it was more unprofessional of the tech guys to leave her mike on when she wasn't even onstage.

But hey, it's an actor's job to blame the stage crew when things go wrong ;)

  • nah I didn't like any of the blending or mixing in of songs at all. definitely some tech issues, mic's and the stage accident etc.. hmmmm

  • Was someone warming up during the West Side Story/Guys and Dolls mashup?

  • the terrible sound is so distracting!! stupid unprofessional tech crew!

  • the rock part went on for AGES imo. weird mix that last one.

  • Next to Normal <3 I LOVE THAT MUSICAL.

  • Bret Michaels is so funny. You need to slow it down to see it happen (The board smacking him in the face.)

  • best Tony awards i recon. they got lucky all the best musicals came out then

  • best Tony awards i recon

  • Aaron Tveit's duckface = 5:50 hehehehe <3

  • 4:52 guy gets crushed by scenery flying in, is that meant to happen??

  • Whose idea was it to mash together "Pal Joey" and "Next to Normal?" Not good.

"West Side Story" and "Guys and Dolls," though.... that was catchy.

  • Rock of Ages got too much time on here... What a disaster in all aspects. Take that out, and its a wonderful opening! I watch it over and over again.

  • It almost sounds like the vocal exercises and the LOUDEST COUGH EVER during "Luck Be A Lady/Tonight (Quintet)" are planned.

  • The mash-up of Guys and Dolls and West Side Story was amazing!

  • the 2009 tony awards was pretty much an audio nightmare. There were sound problems all night with Mics not working, and the stage managaers headset being broadcast and yea..... wow, lol.

  • @sinatrabooth89 You can hea someone doing vocal warmups during the West Side Story/Guys and Dolls mashup.

  • Who's the main guy singing "luck be a lady"?

  • @VioletBob Craig Bierko.

  • @VioletBob Sky Masterson played by Craig Bierko

  • Rock of Ages was kind of a buzz kill :/

It's playing near where i work here in Sf.

  • Karen Olivo looks AMAZING!!!!

  • The guys from West Side Story are very nice. Met them all this past June. :)

  • I screamed like a fangirl when Aaron came on stage.

  • I think ya'll need to focus on the performances and not the fact that the sound crew MADE A MISTAKE. They don't deserve to get fired for honest mishaps. Technical difficulties happen and people make mistakes. So shut up and enjoy the show!

  • @EYDstudios Except for the fact that the Tonys are notorious for having sound problems every year. It's basically a running joke at this point. It's not a mistake it's just plain not having their shit together, and it gets old.

  • @dramatay33 Well, I think the sound at other Tonys is for the most part fine. But whatever floats your boat.

  • Sorry Brett but that's what you get when you lip sync (really really bad) at the TONY AWARDS! Wtf were you thinking dumbass.

  • Next to Normal should have won.

  • the sound crew soooo got fired that night

  • This is so awesome. I just dislike it for the fact that they made a huge deal over Elton John, there was a lot more talented performers on the stage that night. Can't help but think the tony's were slightly fixed towards Billy Elliot this year, Next to Normal should have won in my opinion.

  • LOVE THIS SOOO MUCH!!!

  • The dude from Next to Normal is really good looking

  • I'm from the Netherlands so i don't often watch the tony awards, but the first thing i noticed at 5:07 was that i immediatly thought: Hé, that's Rizzo from the movie Grease!

It is nice to see her this way though..

  • I think I kinda like all the little "wrong" things. it's um... special.

But I still really want a "luck be a lady tonight / tonight" recording without the little sounds that I do like but they're not supposed to be there.

  • can anybody find me the opening for the 2008 Tony Awards? I can't find it

  • My favorite part is that I can hear Maria warming up back stage.

  • I remember watching this and being amazed at how many things went wrong. My high school theatre, as pathetic of equipment that we had, never had technical errors during a show.

  • Met the guy who plays Bernardo in West Side Story...so nice, and majorly yummy :)

  • anyone else love how aaron goes offstage belting is adorable little heart out?

  • @mchammar416 watch how the scenery hits him in the head as he walks off!

  • @johnsmileyjr that was actually brett michaels...

  • @mchammar416 UR correct!

  • LOL that guy pulled a Storm Trooper with the background prop.

  • y the hell is bret michaels there?

  • When and where do the Tony's show?

  • @VAMPIRICROCKSTAR The Tony's usually are the 1st Sunday in June at the Radio City Music Hall in NYC.

  • @Torchgirl42 Thanks :)

  • Mistakes are part of the beauty of Theatre. If you don't want mistakes, act in film. :)

  • 2:16, that man is such a crooner <3

  • Can we give the tech a break?! Yes, there were some mic screw-ups, but they had like a couple days to work out everything with everybody- not alot of time! This also highlights the actor's ability to overcome a tech error, just look at the Guys and Dolls video from the 09 Tony's! Mistakes happen, but we ARE still watching an excellent show right?

  • @SingingGeek05 They didn't have only "a couple days" to work out everything. Pre-production for the Tony's starts about 5 weeks before broadcast. Performance numbers for the opening begin 3 weeks in advance. Final decision happens 10-14 days before broadcast. Rehearsals start 5 days before the awards. Final dress rehearsal is the day before broadcast. My bf has been involved with the Tony's for the last 8 years. They have plenty of time. This time the techs just sucked. Plain and simple.

  • @Picard71 Thank you for correcting me! I guess I had misinformation because that info doesn't surprise me at all. It makes sense. So thanks for telling me :)

  • hahahahaahaha!! At around 2 minutes u can hear Karen and Josefina warming up backstage before they go on. I guess they didn't realize there mics were on. I can hear them clearly with my headphones! It's so funny

  • This show's the Worlds TOP Musicals wich are West Side Story, Hairspray, Grease, Guys&Dolls, and my List Moves On ALOT!!!!!!! AMAZING!

  • at 4:50 you can see the third billy waiting in the wings.

  • Now that videos can be 15 minutes, can you upload the entire opening sequence in one video? Thanks!!

  • 5:08- Look at her she's Sandra Dee!

  • someone please tell me the name of the gorgeous guys singing the song that i believe is from Next to Normal.

  • @anothergirl45 aaron tveit

  • @adriannaxrz thank you!

  • Did anyone else see Bret Michaels' hat get hit off?

  • the GOOD Tony Awards opening....this years was a little messy

  • haha you can hear someone warming their voice up backstage! at 2:06 and at 2:15 you can hear someone trilling.

  • The sound board was horrible at this show. They couldn't turn some mics off or down when that person didn't need to be singing. you can hear the people backstage at 1:55 warming up and coughing at such. its really noticeable at 2:13.

this is an amazing and fun performance, but the added noise was definitely not needed.

  • fail lipsynching totally lowers the bar of this intro... =/

  • @kylezo Yes but I think getting clocked in the face highers it for him. :) Haha jk

  • Bret Michaels got hurt because he doesn't understand the simple idea of a "cue," or "stage directions." There was absolutely no mishap with any set piece, it was his own fault. Actually, it kind of makes me laugh, LOL. Am I also the only one who realized that the girls in Rock of Ages wearing very little were still wearing more clothes than the whores who complete in Bret Michael's reality show?

Everything else rocked. I haven't been able to stop watching this opening since the show itself.

  • @Opal1786 God I know, and seriously he should have gotten his ass out of there...

  • oh Aaron... how hot can you possibly BE! haha :)

  • I'll be in New York this summer, any Broadway reccomendations?

  • Next to Normal and Billy Elliot

    in that order

    :D

  • @xmrsadampascal Thanks! Plus, I have been dying to see Next to Normal :)

By the way, love your username ;)

  • Can't believe how awful the sound is! Elton's problem at the start is obvious, but I only just realised that you can hear the women warming up and talking in the wings because their mics are on before they get on stage!

  • @installedpear the tonys are never perfect....its almost like a tradition. there are always sound and prop mishaps. :)

  • If you didnt notice but when the guy fell the two people from the next two musicals, next to normal and the other one, they didnt notice and the guys cowboy hat was still on stage and they didnt know!

  • Wow, the sounds was pretty bad that year....this does ROCK though XD

  • Electricity is the song at the beginning that Elton sings.

  • Good, might someone indicate me which is the name of the song that elton john sings ???? Please!!!!!

  • oh wait!! he did run into it.. I hope he's ok :(

  • that guy with the cowboy hat almost had his head taken off by that set change!.. wow!!!

  • @T14309 that's bret michaels, lead singer of the band Poison. he got hurt because he didn't get to the back of the stage in time and was hit in the face with a piece of the set coming down. he had to get some stitches on his face. pretty rough situation. he should have gotten back quicker like all the other cast members did, instead of standing there giving the peace sign to the audience! :)

  • i LOOOOVE what they did with west side and guys and dolls!!!

  • <3 Grease meaning..<3 Rizo therefore <3 Stockard

  • i LOVE Stephanie J Block!!! i saw her in 9 to 5... it was one of my favorite musicals that i saw this summer. and i saw 13!

i was crying during that song...

    great show.

  • 4:54 Wow! Poor guy!

  • omg isnt he Tripp from Gossip Girl?

  • yes that is Aaron Tveit who is Tripp on Gossip Girl. However most broadway fans know him as Gabe in N2N

A fun fact is that Gossip Girl films in NY and sometimes uses broadway stars since they are close. Eric's boyfriend was in Spring awaking and the girl who played Aaron's sister in his show N2N was also on an epsidoe of Gossip Girl.

  • 2:54 look at that FAIL

  • @LTHSFanpire You mean fall.

  • haha yea that too

  • look at that ass on Tony.

  • was the women who was singing the song from "Next to Normal" Rizo from Grease?"

  • yes she was

  • she was from pal joey and yes she was

  • she was actually singing a song from pal joey. she was singing with someone from N2N tho. and yes stockard channing was rizo

  • 2:53.

Is that Monica Raymund? Or Ria from Lie to Me?

SOMEONE ANSWER ME. I Love her. :D

  • No, that's Karen Olivo.

  • They look remarkably alike.

  • tonys have always had issue with sound.

  • Wow. Sound fail. Epic Fail.

  • I doubt it was just one person, Tony Awards is supposed to be professional, so they prolly have like fifty to a hundred people backstage not doing their jobs.

  • As a fellow techie, let me just say this techie should be shot.

  • All through the West Side Story/Guys and Dolls part, you can hear other people backstage, pathetic tony sound people. You fail.

  • ha I thought it was just me who could hear it

    agreed this techie is terrible

  • I love how loud the applause is when Aaron Tveit comes out :)))

  • @MegglesLuvsRent This is because he is so yummy!!!

  • i think the part when there was a lady vocalizing was on purpose

    who knows

  • I wonder how long it took the Billys to learn to spin the chair.

  • ugh horrible sound

  • horrible.

  • omg you can hear a lady in the backgroud woraming up

  • i know! its really not good

the opening of this tony awards was really epic and awesome, but the technical aspects just sucked

elton's mic not going on in the beginning, mics going on backstage, the set mishap with rock of ages and nicely's mic going out during the guys and dolls performance

  • @mvy109 not saying the tech stuff wasn't bad, but being there you could hear elton and couldn't hear the WSS mics backstage. everything else happened though!

  • @mvy109 You'd think they'd have top-notch tech people are RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL, but apparently they don't. 2010 Tonys open had problems again. >>

  • @mvy109 Yes... the technical aspect did suck. But live theater is extremely hard. It happens. And it's amazing to see the actors over come it and still kill their songs. :)

  • @mvy109 Yes, but that's the beauty of live theatre. The show goes on. :)

  • WTH i hear some girl vocalizing!! :|

  • every single tonys has problems

last year it was visual now its sound

  • I think this was the best Tony opening I have seen....but the sound problems was really distracting. I could hear people coughing, warming up (a soprano in the background doing scales when GUYS AND DOLLS were singing), and talking. Was so odd and wonder if the audience was hearing it, too. Nonetheless, was a great opening and the boys in BILLY ELLIOT were so amazing, fluid, soaring, literally! Just great!
