  • He's so right. And it's getting worse. Thank German philosophy for the mess of our schools and culture in general!!

  • Great guy, speaking the truth.

Home school your kids, everybody, while you still can!

  • some of the best Frank quotes right here. No Zappa and now no Hitchens, who's in the spotlight to call em like they are now?

  • I don't think we are supposed to apply critical thinking or criticize the system.

  • It also actually kills any divergent thinking ability. Which is key to invention and creativity. you can search 'RSA animate changing education paradigms' to watch a video more about that.

  • grade 1 to 12 = 12 years of brainwashing .. in north america

  • @jmack619

Maybe for you, but if you haven't noticed:

    America>Canada.

  • @PGspeed88 do you mean in tearms of population 10:1 ? or economy? or elected representatives? It's 12 years in a cookie cutter to me

  • To some degree this is true and it is not only in school.

  • i love zappa, i love so many things he says - i have about 36 of his albums, cassetts, cd's and saw him live about 5 times all great shows- i love him to death- BUT- what he just said here is so stupid, i had great teachers who taught me very well and they had alot to do with me being a good person!!! Now am i the only one in america they had great teachers?

  • The truth spoken the way Zappa spoke it is very difficult for many Americans to comprehend.

  • I would have loved to see Zappa try to teach logic to high school students.....his statements sound so deep and meaningful and yet it's pure bullshit :)

  • Dooooofus Zappa.

  • LOVE YOU FRANK ZAPPA!!

  • Imagine if Frank had lived,.....Ron Paul/Frank Zappa!!!! Oh my god i just nearly,.... believed in the republic again.

  • wether he's right or not, its his opinion and he has a right to express himself. it is a very interesting and thought provoking opinion. please look at this from an objective point of view and please stop arguing. discuss, but don't fight, aight? peace.

  • piss and shit obama 666

  • Watching this makes me think that George Carlin stole some material for his stand up act...

  • @JRHartly1984 Mm. Or, they were both smart and articulate enough to come to similar conclusions and express them as such.

I suppose the common link between George and Frank is that they both shared an interest and personal relationship with Lenny Bruce, who was one of the first to make a living with these kinds of opinions.

  • And those "kids that are coming up" are now members of the tea party.

  • he's right.

  • Wise beyond his time.

  • Zappa went from anti gun to lifetime NRA member in a few minutes because someone let him shoot a gun [44 magnum revolver, like Dirty Harry], and it was fun.

His interview in Rolling Stone in the 1960s IIRC, was crap.

The 1974 Stereos of the stars article he got some good lines in about Hot Rats.

Besides Hot Rats, Zappa's life's work has not withstood the test of time.

And, of course, his arm chair philosophy and politics are off the wall crap, e.g. this video.

  • @tnekkc

Dude Zappa made Waay better Albums then Hot Rats for example The Grand Wazoo

and Waka Jawaka and Roxy & Elsewhere and Frank Zappa Live in New York, One Size Fits All

Hot Rats is 35 % as good as these other recordings

  • @musicisthebestF

A matter of taste. I played with rock bands in the early 70s. I listened to the Mothers in the 60s. Some things hold up for me, some things do not. I like Gillian Welch now, so I have moved on.

  • @tnekkc

Oh i am "Only" 30 years old and i am relativly new to Frank Zappa i know him since i was 26 or so and i started with the Albums i mentioned so i like them A LOT

Sorry i dont even know who Gilian Welch is

Zappa opened my Ears For Jazz and i will always thank him for that

I listen to Jamie Cullum and Hiromi Uehara right now ( Best living Jazz piano player in my oppinion )

  • "...but if you go beyond that, you're gonna have these grave doubts that give you stomach problems and headaches..." to each his own. yours to discover

  • @andre23074

    mmh maybe

I believe when You are in a Life Threatening situation you may have a short prayer for

Jesus, even if you might say you dont believe in him

Still i believe i am just Food for the worms in my grave

Maybe that changes when i am like 65 + years old

  • and if you hang in there....all of our schools will merge to be that one big functioning unit to dumb down our youth

  • the sad truth is this is true, a bitter reality that is only getting worse day after day

  • He is 100% correct.

  • Zappa was not quite smart enough to think correctly.

  • @tnekkc ROFL

  • I was a self-proclaimed 'Zappa-phile'.until I did some research into his background. He grew up at Edgewood Arsenal, his father being a chemical warfare specialist, and his wife Gail Sloatman's father was in Naval Intelligence. She ironically went to the same school as Jim Morrison, as his father was a Rear Admiral in the Navy, who would later take part in the Gulf of Tonkin false flag that brought on the Vietnam War. Check out 'The Center for An Informed America'.

  • "spoken like a true pothead" only Zappa didn't smoke pot (tried it once) or drink. Read his book, duh

  • Frank Zappa, a self-proclaimed "true Conservative" in the best tradition.

One of the few musicians who actually had sane socio-political views.

  • Spoken like a true pothead. It's only because he's soft spoken that it sounds intelligent. Home schooling is not a better alternative because children need to interact with other children and develop social skills.

  • @7deadlyvirtues

You need to read the research instead of listening to statist propaganda.

Home-scooled children function better academically and professionally, and have no statistically measurable disadvantage in socialization.

The truth is that "common sense" is unexamined prejudice, when you subject it to verifiable methodology, much of it crumbles before your eyes.

  • @7deadlyvirtues But Zappa never did drugs. He tried cannabis once or twice and didn't enjoy it. And interacting with other children at school never did me any good.

  • @7deadlyvirtues you are not taking into account the transition we have gone through, after the introduction of "social-technology".

We are transitioning ourself away from individual man to tribal man. We are "with it" and everyone knows the same things.

we remove focus from where we live over to how others live. Then we judge them based on our own ignorance.

this is also what happens in schools. we echo what we see on TV and conform knowledge that is useless :-/

  • Very much like George Carlin's views.

  • Quite a thoughtful response............

  • you think that hapens only in america?it's 2011 and it hapens to greece...!

  • I don't know why he thinks schools should teach morality.

Other than that, he pretty much devastated the public school system with a solid arguement and his wisdom applies even to this day.

  • @RoyalJackOfSpades cool story bro

  • i disagree with this. I know people are who are very analytical, innovative and resourceful, not all american schools are made this way. The one trend i see is that all these people are self-motivated. Their natural abilities shine from this, not from their teacher's teachings. That's only a plus. I believe everyone has these intelectual characteristics, its only the result of negative reinforcement by unmotivated teachers of any form that deter these kids from persuing real education.

  • "Communism doesn't work because people like to own stuff" - Frank Zappa lol

  • shit...so that's why i've been having head and stomach aches...

  • And that's what college is for.

  • @Penduluman I'm almost positive he'd include college in the realm of school that he's criticizing. Especially given the way college degrees have become a commodity over the last few decades.

  • So fucking right!

  • Fuck, I miss him...

  • Listening to him there, I can just picture him saying "First I'll buy some beads... then perhaps a leather band to go around my head! Some feathers and bells..... and the book of Indian lore"

  • What is this based on? He makes it sound like the modern school system is based on a conspiracy. Does he have ANY idea how the modern education system was developed? I do, and it has nothing to do with training people to become ignorant slaves of the "military industrial complex".

What a childish thing to say. Too bad the people watching the video swallow his pseudo intellectualism raw.

  • @MMAoracle Agree with you

  • @MMAoracle The problem is critical thinking skills are not taught or even stressed from K-12. Philosophy should be taught early on because it is the basis for all knowledge and can give students a new way of looking at problems. I wouldn't say our education system is a grand conspiracy, but it needs to be reformed.

  • @pananouthakis Oh yeah? You think the problem is just K-12? Ha, the real mechanization of thought really starts at university, that is the political kind anyway. There are tons of professors like Professor Wolff, P. Finkelstein, P. Chomsky who could tell you stories about what political tyrannies universities are, places to indoctrinate the most important members of society.

  • @pananouthakis

How can it not be a grand conspiracy? With all the information available to humanity, after thousands of years of the men with the greatest minds having left us their thoughts in print, and with so much that is known about how individuals learn and grow, how and why have those charged with creating curricula have come up with the current system of left-brain, stifling education, as if it was the best that they could do?

The system is intentionally lame. It has to be.

  • @MMAoracle yeah you dont get it. You have completely missed the point. Dont worry about it.

  • @MMAoracle You missed the entire point of that sound bite. The things you are taught in school are just basic things like math, science, reading, etc. These are important skills to have, but they don't encourage critical thinking or expansion of the mind. They do not teach you to invoke thinking or logic in schools

  • Changing education paradigms - youtube.com/watch?v=zDZFcDGpL4U

  • He's right, which is why schools shouldn't be a government function just as the government doesn't run food stores or car manufacturers. If you want school, pay for the school you like.

  • @gotitans999

Thing is, where I live the government run schools are excellent compared to the private ones. The private ones have less scrutiny on them and can get away with way shittier education.

I can get any bachelors/masters degree for just 1500 euro's a year myself. Now when you look at the more privatised america that average is around 35,000 USD right?

Privatisation of shit like this will not work in a greedy economy without any limits. ESPECIALLY not with edu. Just look at yourself.

  • @infernoacid a school being "excellent" right now is simply a school that produces a high percentage of students that do well in the the tests and go on to get good jobs. This has NOTHING to do with what Frank is talking about.

  • @SpunkMaster3000 How is students doing well on tests and getting good jobs NOT what schools should strive for? That's why we go to school, dumbass, so that we can have a decent job and earn a decent living. Zappa's acting like a drugged out hippie spouting rhetoric and conspiracy. The problem is that in US public schools, they have too many to teach, and not enough individualization. There are problems with increasing education funding and quality of teachers, NOT some government plot.

  • @CatastrophicDisease Frank Zappa was in no way a drugged out hippy. He neither drank nor took drugs and he satirized hippies mercilessly. His point is this, at their best American schools still do not teach critical thinking.

  • @CatastrophicDisease

boy, you my friend are way off base, more funding? check out the literacy rates before no child left behind, and today, not that long ago. the more funding they recieve the worst it gets, check out john taylor gatto, he'll clear your mind up on the subject.

  • @SpunkMaster3000

That is right, and I've never claimed to judge these schools by their students succes rate. All I'm boasting about is that our social school system costs very little for the parents and students, compared to the 100,000 dollars that alot of students pay for a bachelors degree in America, which are compareable educations.

Trust me, my significant other is an educator. I've seen the comparisons to american schooling and its retarded price. Privatisation destroys your schools.

  • Jesus, this guy is so right.

  • The sad part is, he is absolutely right --- 30 years later.

  • What a great guy.

  • 1 million % agreed

  • In 58 seconds, Zappa has summed up the entirety of my arguments against the educational system.

Let's see if my dad will listen to it when it's coming from his mouth!

  • You got it, Frank! Thanks, buddy for all you did in speaking out!

  • Sounds like George Carlin!!!

  • He knew all about the agenda of the elite....still going.......RIP FZ!!

  • pure genius with rational brilliant mind just like George Carlin

  • Comment removed

  • Frank Zappa & George Carlin would have made an incredible duo.

  • It's like Frank had some kind of hotline to the inside of the universe or something. So many times I've sat there amazed at how right this man was about so many things. Then there is his music which is a whole other fantastic ride :)

  • A brilliantly prophetic answer..........if you don't believe it then look around you : )

  • great thinking!!!!..fck the system...most of us are just pawns...part of a process/plan...(build the economy/ make profit) the system doesnt want you to think..it just wants you to play by its rules...if you start thinking, ull be aware of how you are being manipulated and chained.. these days people dont really have time for themselves to enjoy life..its like modern slavery.

  • im not sure ,but i think what he said may be more true now than it was then.actually he said some of the same things that noam chomsky says,as well as a few educators ive known.this stuff is cynical and caustic, zappa is like that i guess, but i fear its true.its kind of scary actually, maybe its ideal for the system to train us well technically but not in a real broad thinking sense[as in bein able to see how we are bein manipulated?].then again the net opens us all up...i jess dont know.

  • So exactly true!

  • yup. for example, everybody came out of the public school say Picasso is a genius. They can't think for themselves. I think Picasso is just a useful idiots to brainwash other useful idiots.

  • facebook won't let me post this video on my wall

  • yep me too

  • And the State is in charge of running our schools. Now the picture comes into sharper focus.

  • Check out John Taylor Gatto. That man (a teacher) will tell you a thing or 2 about "schools". Its not only in America. Its Europe aswel.

  • I believe schools should be improved, yes, but I don't think they're intentionally designed to stamp out creativity and logical thinking. Frank must have just not liked high school much because of all of the mouth breathers.

  • @schutze2006 No, public schooling was intentionally designed to dumb people down and create a homogenous mass of people that would be easy to control. The idea was pushed by communists in their platform, and then other similar types of control freak social planners. You can research it.

  • @MillionthUsername

    Yes,you can research it-so why don't you?

If you did you would find it goes back to the decidedly non-communist Prussians and nineteenth

    century Britain,also very much a non-communist society.

Are you a libertarian by any chance?

  • @mistrysherlock Yes, I'm a libertarian. I don't believe that violent cults should abduct the children of free people and indoctrinate them into socialism and fascism while forcing their parents as well as others to pay the salaries of the child abusers.

I did not say that the Prussians were communists. I did not say that communists invented the idea of mass indoctrination of children. It goes back at least as far as the Spartans. You might want to read what I wrote before you reply.

  • @mistrysherlock Read some of Charlotte Iserbyt's research. She was involved in the whole "education" complex.

  • wow he is soooo right

  • im a senior in college.

    fuck.

  • schools dont teach logic? uh, how about math? philosophy? critical analysis in essays?

sorry, this is where i disagree with zappa. certainly, you dont need school to learn logic, but it doesnt mean that school doesn't teach it.

  • @dimogoblin They never taught geometry in my school. This was more true then than now.

  • @dimogoblin is it logical to have to pay through the ass to learn, is it logical to think you are only "someone" if you get letters after your name and a piece of paper to frame, is it logical to treat human beings as cattle to move from room to room, is it logical to hold every human being to the same grading standards.. no to all of them. i noticed that people who got straight As smoked just as much pot as other people and never studied, they just had good memories. Are they "better"?

  • the system seems to think so.

  • How many in the school system can put words to what Zappa says, understand, or know about what he speaks of, is the only question.

  • shit, love this guy

  • the same 2day

  • RIP, frank!!! man, you need to come back and run for president!!! hell, ur so awesome- i'm gonna vote for you anyway!!! zappa for prez!!!

  • when was this? mid 70s? He hit the nail on the head and is sooooo true today.

  • @CCTXEarthmonkey close, 1981
