  • SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER THIS:

When the tennis racquet pops up on the screen firstly in the video, what editing program would I need to do that? Also to add the numbers on the bevels, it couldn't be that complicated surely?

  • @TopTennisHighlights Anything capable of "chroma keying"...so pretty much anything that isn't Windows Movie Maker

  • actually federer forehand grip is halfway between eastern and semi-western grip

  • Please, please, do one of these of these on Roger's backhand grip. It seems he's between Eastern backhand and and Continental but no-one has proven this right or wrong. Thanks!

  • roger's face in that picture just says to me, " lol i dunno just playing tennis" :D

  • this video was well constructed but inaccurate. Roger is clearly a semi-western forehand and not eastern. an eastern forehand would place roger's bridge(between the thumb and the index finger) in the center of bevel #1. His bridge is resting on the first #2 bevel. Nadal's is on the back bevel #2 . YOU CAN NOT base the grip on the index knuckle only due to the fact we all measure out differently but the grip size is fixed. the bridge is the only precise way to determine grip .

  • Hi Fuzzy,

It looks more to me like a continental grip.

  • IMHO, Federer uses a modified Eastern grip, which is between Eastern and Semi-western. Djokovic uses a grip between Semi-western and Western, but closer to Semi-Western.

  • @mrbobevans how would you calculate the middle? it would still be on the 3rd bevel, because the 3rd bevel is larger than the 4th, thus the mean/middle will still lie on the 3rd bevel. If you mean that it is in between the bevels on the line, then it clearly isn't as you can see from the video. So I think you can think of it as a not so strict eastern, or not so traditional eastern, or it could be. But I still can't understand by what you mean by between eastern and semi-western.

  • @mrbobevans I think it's probably like that to generate more spin or that's probably what comes more naturally (with the teachnique/feel/shot), but the knuckle is still on the THIRD bevel which makes it an eastern. The middle of the knuckle (geometrically speaking) is in the middle of the two then it's still on the third bevel. Also from the picture, it doesn't look modified, but I think it has to do with the shot/feel, or what comes naturally rather than trying to seeif it's halfwaybetween or..

  • @mrbobevans the eastern is smack in the middle of the third bevel, so even if it tends to the 4th a bit, the modification does not matter. This is ebcause the semi western is such a completely different grip for the forehand. I can't play that way and I see people who do and can. The eastern comes naturally to me, and even if my knuckle slips off the centre of the bevel, or in the sense of a modification, it makes no real difference. Only real change occurs when you move an entire bevel.

  • @mrbobevans the modification for the semiwester and western is different, as the semi western already tends to a frying pan-ish grip(western). The eastern and semi western are in two different sets altogether, so unless the knuckle is on the line between the bevels/slightly on the 4th, then it's eastern. Once you move your knuckle onto the line, between the bevels then it stops being an eastern and you can't really call it a modification of the eastern.

  • I like that even though you've said you're looked at thousands of pictures, and gave proof, everyone is like.. NOOOOOOOO... just because you guys can't hit like roger unless you use your extreme grips, doesn't mean he isn't using eastern, it just means you can't hit like that without an extreme grip lol.

  • isn't fed's forehand half way between and eastern and semi-western?

  • @rogerigez21 no . eastern. many make the mistake cause of his technique .

  • hu gives a shit bout western southern grip etc - just keep hitting the ball and eventually ul work out whats best for you

    practice makes perfect.

  • @bilalaslamful You couldn't be more right(Even if I like Roger Federer)

  • @bilalaslamful if you want to get more topspin then you get a grip which helps you get more topspin

  • well done

  • looks like semi western! are u shure his forehand is eastern??

  • richard schönborn called it own variation of semiwestern grip.its never the classic eastern like sampras its more semiwestern

  • I think Roger was using the eastern grip for the spring of 2009 but as of Wimbledon 2009 he uses the semi-western, just like he used between 2004 and 2008.

  • made in china :o federers poor

  • @FYB2007 what is the difference between continental and eastern grip?

  • @matx97 Eastern is like shaking somebody's hand, Continental is like semi western, but instead of you index knuckle being at the bottom, it's on the top.

  • Nice video, I think you could get away with just saying that Fed plays with a full eastern grip.

  • Why is this most viewed FYB video??

  • This video is fake, it has CHINA letter.

  • lol, someone should count how many times he says index, knuckle and bevel... I'm not going to do it.

  • after this vid finished all i could think of was'' third bevel'' third bevel over and over

  • I'm just curious... WHO CARES?!!?

  • total bollocks dude

  • @danthestringerman Your comment reflects on YOU! Without anything informative to add or explain you sound like you have t**** b******* in your head.

  • @Tony07UK and what did you add Oh Great Tennis Master?

  • Does Del Potro use the Eastern grip ?? or Semi-western ?

  • For the exception that Roger made: looking at that picture i would say that he was going to execute a buggy whip forehand as the one that Rafel Nadal does all the time. In order to perform that shot you have to use that kind of grip.

Look at the position and you´ll see.

    Tell me if i´m brong.

  • There's noway in hell fed uses a eastren forehand grip. I has to be closer to a semi-westren grip. A eastren grip is just to hard to hit with. any body out there that hits with a eastren grip let me know.

  • @gooseneck12 i hit with an eastern grip on my forehand!! and why do you say theres no way in hell that roger could hit with an eastern grip??

  • @gooseneck12 Maybe eastern is better for pros who want power. John McEnroe use eastern hand grip too.

Eastern grip can produce the least spin. Semi-western is good for baseline hitter. While western hand grip is the best for counter puncher.Just my opinion.

  • what is the index knuckle again ?

  • That's why roger federer is my favourite tennis player!

  • i thought it was a modified eastern forehand

  • It's a semi-western grip!

  • its semi-western

  • This is totally rubbish. Hold the racket yourself with your hand in the same position as shown in your videos and you will clearly see the grip is semi-western to western. you have forgotten to account for the angle of the grip on the racket.

  • @FYB2007

Hi Will (i think thats your name)

im from australia and ive started to play a lot of tennis (2 years ago), and I'd REALLY REALLY appreciate if you watched my recruiting video and gave me some tips. Im not sure if i should bend my arms on my backhand on the backswing, I think I'll change that. Thanks a lot if you comment. Just go to my channel, its the only video

  • More correctly know as the 'Modifed' Eastern Grip...great grip for versatility. Thumbs up??

  • I would have to say that's probably closer to a semi-western. In any event, most amateurs and even pros rarely get exactly the same grip every time. Some pros definitely change grips depending on the spin they want. I know I'll swap to a western if I'm in a defensive position a lot of the time, or even if I want to hit a heavy ball inside out to my opponents 1 handed backhand. I can't imagine being stuck to one grip.

  • Looks like a mild semi western to me.

  • I always thought Roger used the Western Grip

  • U CAN'T do it as fed :p

  • THE BEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME!

  • why dont you just ask Roger federer??

  • @26Remoh he probably won't be able to tell you LOL

  • how about Nadal F/B hands please

  • Some how i Just see the china is sooo big

  • Jesus...who cares? u knowing that will make u good as RF?

  • 1:10 Federer is looking at the ball like "WTF?"

  • Lol, your racquet is made in china.

  • looks so cool! hit f13.

    like ir it got u

  • Index Knuckle...

  • ur like a weatherman but tennis style

  • @rcminit109 hahahahahahahhaha good answer :)

  • Well, I think we got the point in the end.

  • why dont you just ask roger federer..?

  • thumbs up for a, WTF is Federer wearing a butterfly shirt for?

  • Oh no federer 1 pic of the 3000 damn.. xD

  • I use a kind of different grip - my index knuckle rests on the 3rd bevel but my heel pad tends to rest on the edge between the 2nd and the 3rd bevel - so I can swing more easily ... and as a point to be mentioned ... It works very good ... that makes it a Modivied Eastern ?

  • @IStef11 Modified*

  • @IStef11 You likely have an Australian grip then. That's between a continental and an eastern.

  • I think they made this video because there is controversy surrounding Federer's actual forehand grip. I've seen it labeled Eastern, Modified Eastern (on the edge between the 3rd and 4th bevel), and Semi-Western.

Personally I found this video very interesting.

  • i love how the racquet has a big china sign :D

  • what. the. fuck. most boring video in my entire life

  • fuzzy asian balls

  • @holex213 LOL

  • God made mankind, and everything else is made in CHINA!..

  • wow this is hilarious

  • i dont think any player thinks about this.. this is so stupid

  • does federer place his index knuckle on the 3rd bevel?

  • The eastern grip is not the most conservative grip in the modern game? No, the continental grip is.

  • @edbruby uh no only a 3.0 > player would use a continental grip in the modern game

  • @Anon1352 john mcenroe has always used a continental grip for almost all shots.

  • I learned one thing from this video, China is making everything........

  • even Fedderer wouldnt have analyzed som much abt it.... He holds the bat in the way he feels comfy

  • 1:06 love federer's shirt, lmao

  • @JTranByU haha i thought it was pretty gay myself

  • Comment removed

  • Wil, I belive You.

  • actually i dont think 3000 is enough

  • what is nadal's forehand grip?

  • @narutofanjustin nadal's forehand grip is western, as with most of the clay court players.

  • Mr. Hamilton said that Roger's index nackle is on #3.

BUT! his index nackle is clearly on #4 !!!

That means Roger use strong-earstern grip.

    I'm right!

  • @illumination3000 The grip he uses most of the time is the one that will is showing however Federer said that he changes it slightly depending on how he wants to hit the incoming ball.

  • with the eastern grip you don't have to change the grip for a slice

  • and what about your tennis skills

  • i dont think its about the grip, i think its about how comfortable you hold the racket then go from there to adjust your shot

  • Why is the eastern grip conservative? I was taught to use the semi western briefly but i only just noticed i've been playing with eatern grip all along after wathcing this vid.

  • @Kiasko it is conservative because it produces the least amount of spin (aside from continental). As the game has evolved players have chosen grips more and more extreme.

  • @thegarbageman21 Federer hits the 2nd highest RPMs on the tour (~2700RPM) with his eastern forehand grip. I wondfer what the semi-westen sheeple have to say.

  • @hajime2k yeah my comment was poorly worded. I use eastern grip and get a ton of spin. I meant eastern naturally has less of a brushing motion and more through the ball which suits aggressive players like fed. You can still brush hard and get plenty of spin.

  • Kind of stupid, most people do change their grip slightly when they hit a flatter forehand, maybe to a semi-western, just like Federer does.

  • toyota has this car called prius, that helps whoever drives it turn gay.

  • its never the classic eastern

  • FYB dude seriously this is the dumbest analysis of federer forehand grip just the racquet string point towards the ground indicate a semi western grip, you think that any one even the fedex can generate that much spin from an eastern grip. Its semi western. If Jim Courier said it in one of feds matches, to create that much spin from an eastern grip you would need a hammer for a wrist or you would need to wank about 500 times a day. I doubt federer does has or does any of the mentioned !

  • never heard the word index knuckle so often in my life..

  • @fambestera As a matter of fact, I've never heard the word EVER before in my life.

  • @fambestera and bebble

  • @fambestera or the word bevel...

  • @fambestera Dude, there were more words BABEL

  • this dude looks very sportive! so manly! incredibly bright shoulders!

  • Am i the only one finding this silly ? A player should know whichever grip works for them the second they pick up the racquet and hit a couple of balls, it should be a natural thing, not something you learn from watching someone else. Every person is different, length of arms, weight of the limbs, power they can deliver....i think trying to copy something as trivial as a grip will result in bad tennis, just hold the rocquet whichever way it allows you to play the best strokes

  • @fdsfjsdfjjl Wow that is a great explaination man, but you know sometimes people like to imitate to see if they can get better.

  • @fdsfjsdfjjl You're assuming that someone already knows how they should be hitting the ball, as in the full stroke path their arm and racket will be taking. How would you expect someone to know which grip works best for them if they're swinging completely wrong? I think that's a bit of an unrealistic expectation. Besides, I'm guessing that from the moment any pro tennis player picked up a racket they didn't just stick with that grip until the pros - they probably tried out a few.

  • @fdsfjsdfjjl Furthermore, people develop a hitting style through years and years of practice. The keyword here is "develop". They're not magically born with a perfect grip on a tennis racket. Also, I'm sure quite a few rec players watch these videos, so how else are they supposed to get tips on how to hold the racket if not by a coach? At least trying out someone else's grip that has a proven track record is a good place to start, as opposed to just figuring everything out on your own.

  • roger federer's grip is between the eastern and semi-western grip..

  • I have to disagree with the grip he uses. John Yandell did a presentation 3 years ago at the USTA Tennis Teachers conference in NYC. John is one of the founders of taping the pros at 250 frames a second, high speed video. Federer uses a modified eastern grip. The base knuckle is on the 3rd bevel but the heal pad is on the 4th bevel. Federer also has 5 different swing on the FH depending on what type of shot he is going to execute.

  • People should get in mind those guys are not simply mortals. They don't stick to orthodox stuff. They just do whatever they feel good and that's it. Trying to understand that will make you just more confused.

  • The problem with this analysis is that Roger hits with his heel pad actually off of the grip on both wings, so although the grip appears to be eastern, it is not in the sense that his entire palm is not behind the racket at contact. This allows him to use his wrist to whip the racket around in a swing path that is more like a semiwestern's swing than a traditional eastern swing.

  • Federer could improve his game if he changed to a Semi-western(one click

clockwise) It is stronger grip with more support and generates more speed

through the ball. He is playing Flinstones forehands while others have

    moved on to the Jetsons.

  • @RATkins741 improve his game? His game is flawless he used that grip to win 16 grand slam, and he is 2nd to nadal in topspin, and his forehand is one of the best in the game. There is no need to switch to a semi western.

  • @RATkins741 Lol

  • When I was growing up playing in the 1970's, that grip of Roger's was called a Western grip. Times change.

  • at 1:49 he looks kinda scared

  • hahaha at 1:06 roger looks like he thinking "WTF is this?"

  • don't you also have to take into consideration the size of the hand? not just the position of the knuckles

  • How do you guys get funding to look at 3000 pictures

  • on the contrary, i believe pros use about the same grip on every stroke. they vary their swing path to generate different shot results... flat shots, topspin, slice, sidespins. pros might also add or take a little wrist out of the shot to produce more varied shots.

  • @joe101510151015

Thats not possible to use the same grip for everything. You can't serve, baseline and volley with forehand and backhand effectivly.

  • china.

  • I think it is semi-western might be a little eastern, but looks like semi-wwestern to me.

  • @TheSSBBfreak that is what i thought too

  • @TheSSBBfreak

I agree. For me, he is clearly using a semi-western grip.

  • Comment removed

  • Federer is a master. He uses many different grips according to the specific shot he wants to hit. Spinny ones, flat drives, side spinners, slices, drop shots, all variable depending on where he wants to hit the ball. Not really a point of argument, as most good players use slightly different grips when a shot requires it. Great suggestion, Kevinkenney, to just have someone ask Roger to describe what he does.

  • what about when they keep rotating the racket before receiving a serve? =P

  • The best way to describe grips is not demonstrated here. The common method is to describe the "flats" and "bevels". The FLAT is what is described here, and the BEVEL is the edge between FLATS. With grips, many players have their base knuckle on a FLAT and the heal of their hand on a BEVEL.

  • @roycwhite Bah!

  • at 1:58 it looks continental

  • Comment removed

  • @osicran1029 actually he does play tennis and you are wrong. He uses eastern without question. maybe considered extreme eastern but definitely not semi west. Go home

  • Comment removed

  • @osicran1029 lol your telling me that I don't play tennis because you don't know what an eastern forehand grip is . . . There is an eastern forehand and eastern backhand grip. Two different things buddy. Eastern forehand grip is NOT a grip for serve. I am a 5.0 ranked tournament player in florida.

Federer uses a slightly extreme eastern grip. It is definitely not SW though.

  • @thegarbageman21 eastern forehand grip CAN be used to serve, I use it on my kick serve to get more spin on it

  • made in china

  • wow the best tutorial vid ever... you're the best.. keep up...thank you so much... million stars for you...

  • I love your videos! Thanks.

  • fuzzy yellow balls is the name of the website??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • im gonna try it :)

  • I had no idea there was so much to simply holding a racket

  • Would this be considered a "Wiener Shot" ?

  • i use a western grip but sometimes its hard to transfer the western into a backhand for me

  • isnt that a normal grip?

  • So, by doing this i can be a PRO tennis player???

    This sum things up.

  • Semi-western..... amateur

  • Jeez, just tell me his grip, it's way easier to just tell it me, instead of saying, "he holds his knuckle here, and his finger here, and then this blah blah..., Ok? Just tell us next time.

  • and ?!! .....

  • I may use any grip I like for a forehand in the modern game.

  • bigger fan of the western grip

  • @TheBoondockSaints211 its really hard to use it though...

  • Ok so now that I know it, I can beat him...

  • lier e ues semi-western dipshit

  • wat grip do you play with?

  • hahahhahahahha a butterflyy! oh thats great roger, thats great!

  • From a traditional point, Federer should play with a 4 or 5 grip size. Like Nadal, the small grip allows a bit more wristiness and changing of the grip. In other words, you cannot really define his grip traditionally since it's like putting a size 2 dress on a 150 pound woman.

  • Fun to watch and seeing all the comments, this is an interesting topic. In reality, Federer and Nadal's grips are non-traditional. Keep in mind that their grips are small (size 3 and 2, respectively) and their hands are large. Traditionally, you fit the grip with about 1 finger distance between the tips of the fingers and the heel pad when fully gripped. Or take a ruler and measure between the 3rd and 4th finger (from the top of the 4th finger to the 2nd crossline.

  • With a large hand on a small grip, the knuckles will take a different alignment. Which is why there is so much debate. Sort of like wearing a belt. If you define the belt by how much excess hangs out, for a tiny person, the same belt might have 6" out but a big person might only only have 1" hang out. Then, if you call the first hole western and the second hole semi-western...well, you will get different definitions for the same belt.

  • FYB big question,, Do you think roger hits the dip drive/high forehand with the eastern grip? I am developing the dip drive shot but I have been only using the eastern grip my whole life .. Thanks for your time..

  • Great video and eastern grip forehand of Roger Federer.

  • I fucking love n-blade racquet! :) just beatiful

  • Why are people saying this is pointless? It's FYB, they are a site devoted to tennis. It isn't like Will is a random guy doing this, he's a very smart instructor.

  • gripping it like i'm giving som1 a wank :D
