The "surge" didn't do a damn thing. The reduction of violence was due to the Sunni's huge migration elsewhere way before we ramped up our efforts. There is satellite proof.

And this means those Sunni's will be reappearing again very soon..

Kudos to George Stephanopolous, for grilling Obama on several things, including his ridiculous spin of the Iraq Surge. George wasn't about to let Obama get away with the 'well, the political goals have not been met' angle---and he reminded Obama that 15 out of the 18 political benchmarks have been met. Could this be a foreshadowing of events in the debates for Obama? This made him look clueless.

It looks like he want's to cut the tape and start over. This is priceless. What cracks me up about this the most is the look on Georges face, because it wasn't even a hard question. He's got a "just answer the damn question already" look going for him with a touch of "you're the best we have?" I've watch this 10 times already, it turned a shitty day around for me.

What worked was the military leaders began to listen to the groundtroops, who made it clear that the only way to fix it was to work with the people against Al Quaida in the way the Anbar Awakening had initiated. Simply surging more troops in wouldn't have done it, there needed to be a new effort to follow the Awakening lead. The political situation shifted just before the surge, and troops were employed more effectively simply because there was concerted effort by the Iraqi people themselves.

The reason the surge worked is because we started paying off the tribal chiefs in CASH. We should have never been there in the first place. That is the issue.
