It was well known in the NHL that you keep your head up, ESPECIALLY when Stevens was on the ice, if you didn't then you could expect to be concussed at some point. He hit clean and like a truck, it was his skill. It is a players responsibility to make sure he doesn't put himself in danger, always keep your head up, it's not just a saying, it's a real responsibility. People have no right to complain about concussions from clean hits when a player isn't being responsible about his own well being.

@bobbyricigliano seemed most of those hits were north south, the DIRTY ones you refer to are mostly East West.. like that flyer Mike richards almost looping from behind Booth and then heading east west to blindside him... and got nothing for it..
@ghytgb hits from behind should've been banned from the start. too prone to neck injuries. the blindside hits a lot of times are a result of not keeping your head up which they teach you from day one. I'm sure now we are gonna see a lot of suspensions as the hits will probably still occur but it seems punishable no matter what now. not a fan of that, but whatever protects the players is probably best.

dirty hits are swept under the rug if the outcome isn't ugly. it's been going on in the NHL for ever! you just name one incident that you thought was dirty and i can very easily name an incident of equal circumstances that was swept under the rug. ALL HARD HITS SHOULD BE REVIEWED TO PREVENT A PLAYER FROM SERIOUS INJURY. it'll never happen because the league doesn't care enough. they only hand out suspensions for ugly incidents to put a band aid on them.
@silfocus84 Its still clean in the rule book. Believe it or not, the hit was reviewed. No problem with that one to be honest. Shoulder to chin is just as clean as shoulder to chest. What needs to be looked at are knee to knee hits. They aren't legal in the rule book, but a lot of them go uncalled. Just an opinion. Knee injuries destroy careers in one blow sometimes. Its easier to recover from a concussion.

Compared to other hitters..... not mouthy. not cocky. he didnt fuck around. He'd just cave your skull in. I still remember reading about when he clobbered Kozlov and Cicarelli started mouthing off about it..... Stevens just turned around and said "You're next!".... I LOVED that. Those two words probobly terrified him to the bone. Also, have you ever seen his hands in interviews or something?? They are like shovels! Fighting him must have been like being clobbered by an anvil!

@jamesmoyen - Gary Roberts was another great leader. Messier was only great when he was surrounded by his dynasty Oiler teammates. Stevens led the Devils to the cup 3 times over a 9 year period. That's solid! N.Y. has had absolutely nothing going on before they got Messier so they had to build him up in the media as a great leader. He sucks that crap up! Messier got the Rangers passed the 2nd round just 2 times in his 10 year career in N.Y.! He really was not a great leader at all!

I think Scott Stevens was great and was a clean hitter, regardless of what some whiners think. That being said, the maker of this video has a poor grasp on the concept of repsect and the inclusion of a prostrate Paul Kariya subequent to a classic Stevens hit was both unnecessary and emblematic of low character. Paul Kariya was a classy player who dealt with and succumbed to consussions during an otherwise remarkable career. Dear ghytgb, go fuck yourself.

@ghytgb hits from behind should've been banned from the start. too prone to neck injuries. the blindside hits a lot of times are a result of not keeping your head up which they teach you from day one. I'm sure now we are gonna see a lot of suspensions as the hits will probably still occur but it seems punishable no matter what now. not a fan of that, but whatever protects the players is probably best.

@silfocus84 yeah i don't like the last bunch of head huntings and OVs hit from behind but the suspension calls by colin cambell are total horse shit. parise got ran into the boards a few days ago and there was no call. it should've been reviewed after the announcers repeated how dirty it was but nothing. parise could've easily broke his leg but he was able to get up and skate away. the suspensions are given out only because of the outcome of a hit and not for the hit itself which is bullshit!

dirty hits are swept under the rug if the outcome isn't ugly. it's been going on in the NHL for ever! you just name one incident that you thought was dirty and i can very easily name an incident of equal circumstances that was swept under the rug. ALL HARD HITS SHOULD BE REVIEWED TO PREVENT A PLAYER FROM SERIOUS INJURY. it'll never happen because the league doesn't care enough. they only hand out suspensions for ugly incidents to put a band aid on them.

@silfocus84 Its still clean in the rule book. Believe it or not, the hit was reviewed. No problem with that one to be honest. Shoulder to chin is just as clean as shoulder to chest. What needs to be looked at are knee to knee hits. They aren't legal in the rule book, but a lot of them go uncalled. Just an opinion. Knee injuries destroy careers in one blow sometimes. Its easier to recover from a concussion.
