Damon Harris was a MUCH better Falsetto for the Temps after Eddie's departure. He locked onto Eddies style and range EFFORTLESSLY. Not knockin Glen's performance. but THIS performace for Glen didn't look comfy for him. maybe nerves.
Loved Eddie, he was original, Glenn was great, (and look for the tribute piece he did recently on YT talking about the classic guys, but for me the best falsetto/tenor is the guy there now Ron Tyson, I know a lot of traditional Tempts fans will disagree - but for me he's the best!!!
Glenn Leonard's stint with the Temptations was about as long as this video clip, mercifully. He's no Eddie Kendricks or Ron Tyson.
Lawrence Welk had livelier audiences than the Temptations had for this performance. As Rodney Dangerfield said in "Caddyshack," 'the graveyard is that way!"
@Briggsy3365 You don't know what you're talking about. Glenn was a member for 8 years, from 1975-1983. He has a fantastic voice. Check out the Temptations do the Temptations album.
I like Glenn but I think that his replacement sounded the best of the Eddie Kendricks replacements. Don't believe me then look up Ron Tyson singing Just My Imagination.
im personally a huge fan of damon and eddie, but i cant say that i dont like glenn. i also think that richard is a great replacement too because he gets involved with the audience which not too many performers do as well as him.
@toerag You should see it when Eddie and David were in the group. It's out there now. They were on the Ed Sullivan Show. They sang this song, then All I Need, Then My Girl and finished with I'm Losing You. I loved the steps too.
Of course, nothing can replace the Classic Five, but The Temptations were still kicking it in the 70's and 80's. Both Damon Harris and Ron Tyson were good replacements for Eddie Kendricks. However, Glenn Leonard kicked butt on the Temptations Christmas Album when they sang Silent Night. Richard Street was never a good fill in for David Ruffin's voice. Richard's voice was not strong and powerful enough. Dennis Edwards was a good replacement for David.
glenn and Richard did alright, if otis thought they were not good they wouldn't be in the group, like who you like, but the tempts didn't take a step back after david , eddie and Paul left, damon, richard, and dennis did just fine, seven #1 hits after the classic, give the other members some credit, they ain't suppose to sound like Eddie and David.
I agree, though Glen will forever be overshadowed on "Just My Imagination". He's an amazing talent, but Kendricks made that particular song so thoroughly his own.
Wow this performance sucks...The Glenn guy is no Eddie...wow, and richard is ok, but I can tell this was just the beginning of the end. And why were so many people fired. If it was Otis' doing, what was his problem...it seems like Melvin was probably just kissing butt to save himself...ugh I need to read Otis' book
Damon Harris comes the closest to Eddie's sound. "Love Woke Me up this Morning" is superlative. I can also appreciate Damon's work with Impact, tracks like "One Last Memory." Ron Tyson is next in sound (like E.K.) He's a great performer and composer. Check out Ron's Christmas album. His songs with The Ethics are also exceptional and beautiful ballads. Glenn is also a great tenor with his own unique sound. "Silent Night" and I'm On Fire" are among his best recordings with the group.
djreelballer, I agree with you. Glenn was the weak link. He just didn't measure up to Eddie or Damon Harris who was a Eddie clone. Also, Richard Street could never pull off My Girl to my satisfaction.
but... they did the best they could... but no one could ever be THE EDDIE KINDRICK. AND WE do all know that, but GLORY TOO GOD ALMIGHTY for creating the TEMPTATIONS. i just CANNOT articulate their affect on me even after all these years, speaking for many, i know. MUCHO LOVE GUYS.
Glenn is a horrible Tenor and wasn't even close to being the best. First Eddie, then Damon, then Ron and LAST is Glenn. Glenn sounds like a clown on crack along with Ron. Only Damon Harris was the closest to taking Eddie's place and voice.
Wow!! a clown on crack. It's ok to dislike one's voice, but to degrade someone you don't know puts you in the pansy ass section of society. Glenn was and is a great tenor and for someone who probably couldn't sing to save his pathetic, I live through Eddie K. cause I couldn't cut as a preformer, life should think before he talks.
one thing some of the more current videoes of the tempts flaws are, the Tempts are known for their graceful moves ...you got to keep the angle on that, don't close up on the lead singer and we see the moves after they are done..I noticed this in their 1980's concert live at harrah's it just took away from the quality of the video.
Funny thing about it is that overall he's my favorite of the tempts to fill that role but when he's stuck singing some of Eddie's lower parts at the break of his falsetto it wasn't quite happening... very eye opening
This is exactly my point. NONE of those songs you named are by the original five. all of those songs were recorded with Otis Williams, David Ruffin, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks. The ORIGINAL line-up included a man named Al Bryant. The whole point of this is really to say, if you except one replacement, why not others. And please, Don't call Mr. Ruffin and original temptation, as good a singer as he was, he was not an original.
The Tempts made the Tempts who they went on to become. David was an instrumental part of that, just like the other four members. but to discount them after his or eddie's departure doesn't make logical sense, especially since some of their biggest hits came after him. I love david's stuff, but he was not an original. If you want to call him one...fine, but then call all the other hit making temps (which includes all of them except ricky, louis, and al) originals as well. It doesn't make sense.
celticgreen5 you are so right no that Otis put in the group will ever be better than the oringinal Fab 5 and 1965 was the biggest sell out because David, Eddie, and Paul was singing on the cut. I liked Dennis somewhat I wish that he writes a book about his time in the tempts while with Paul,Eddie I like to her someone else version of what really happen with Paul and Eddie.
I knew they were on the Midnight Special and did a medley, but I was so upset because it was never re-aired when VH1 was showing them back in the day. Thanks for finding this and sharing it with us!
This just proves that in order to be a Temptation, you need to be able to DANCE, man.
