Sharapova is no walk over for Clijsters their head to head is pretty even, plus Azarenka just beat her so im not sure about Clijsters, but ya they both better watch out for Serena. And Venus who is coming back in Miami. I would love to see Maria beat Serena again though so it can be somewhat of a rivalry again not a walkover for Serena. haha

I honestly don't even think the Williams like to play Sharapova, she is a very dangerous opponent. Not to mention she probably has the best return of serve in the womans game. Thats is why it seems the Williams always prepared and play their best againt her, because if they don't Maria will give them a run for their money. For example 05 AO, 05 and 07 Miami vs Venus, 2010 Wimbledon.

@AFCompany I think Serena LOVES playing Sharapova because she typically owns her in head to head matches. Sharapova has the most "consistent" return of serve, but Serena has the BEST return of serve and gets more free points off that stroke than anyone. She also has the best serve and superior movement and net coverage than Maria. It's just a bad match up on paper for Sharapova who needs to be able to dictate play in order to win. She can't dictate against Serena.

Serena isn't always looking to do something with the return and Serena will only attack some players serves. Sharapova will return and crush anyones serve. Also Sharapova has the highest percentage of return games won on tour for 2011. But I agree with everything else you said. Sharapova could beat her again but she has to be hitting lines and serving well to do so.

Serena hasn't really played much this year, so Sharapova's stats from this year compared to Serena's are dubious in terms of making a solid comparrison. I know that Serena usually gets more return winners when she plays Sharapova than vice versa. I will stipulate that Sharapova probably has a better "return game" than Serena has at the moment, but not necessarily a better return of serve.

No one should be bashing Sharapova's game. In my opinion Sharapova is the 3rd best player on tour behind Venus and Serena. Sharapova might not have a plan B but she does use strategy when she plays. Trust that she is 3rd in line of opponents you don't want to face right behind Venus and Serena. Its just that the Williams are so good that they can make even someone as good as Maria look like crap. They are extremely talented. Sharapova will beat them again, but she has to be on fire to do so.

I honestly think Sharapova will only get better she's only 24yo. A few more polishing of her serve after that shoulder injury, she'll be back on track. Reaching RG semis and Wimby finals of 2011 wasn't really bad at all. It will be exciting to see her fiercely competing and do better next year.

Don't get why everyone's hating on maria, she didn't play anywhere near what she could've here. Serena knows it, which is why she was so humble at the net and clapped when maria walked out at the end.. That being said it seems serena always wants to bring her best against sharapova out of respect, and the fact that she doesn't want to lose to her ever again after that 04 wimbledon.

A few of the commentators have asked her how the earrings don't bother her, and Serena always says that she doesn't even feel them there - she's just so accustomed to it. However, I think a big part of her struggling on serve is that she faced Serena, who's patiently waiting on the other side of the net to whack a winner (and who's quite consistent at doing this). For instance, Serena vs. Lisicki in this tournament - Lisicki's biggest weapon is her serve and she got WHOOPED 61 62. If you watched the match, Lisicki's serve proved to be very unreliable - almost timid.
